Installing Starlink (Satellite Internet) Off-Grid in Portugal

When we're faced with less than ideal circumstances we're always looking for ways to improve the situation. We've been dealing with pretty poor internet connectivity - via a 4G data SIM - for the last two years. It's time for an upgrade!
In this video we'll go through the whole process from unboxing to installation to having a positive (and hopefully faster!) Internet experience. We'll talk about the costs of Starlink in Portugal, contrast this to 4G data and - of course - compare the speeds of each.
Let's find out if Starlink satellite internet from Space X is any good.

If you aren't getting signal from the Starlink router in the house, consider investing in a separate long range wifi router like Unifi U6-LongRange or other brand of your choosing with good long range wifi routers. Hardwire it into the Starlink with the Ethernet attachment, then use that instead of the Starlink WiFi

We've had Starlink for almost a year now after trying 4G internet and we have no regrets. Regarding power usage, it's the round dish which uses ~150w, but the square dish uses *much* less. We've put a power monitor on ours and the square dish averages ~40w/h over a 24hr period. We still put a timer on it so it's turned off overnight.

In northern Alentejo some friends put a transmitter in a church tower and sent a signal 5km to the top of a water tower to a solar powered antenna/transmitter and then sent the signal 2km further onto the property to a receiver. The solar system for the water tower was by far the biggest expense. Since you are only 2km if you have clear line of site from the village to your land it is very possible without a midway point. If you have a hill blocking the signal then it gets a bit more tricky and costly but still possible. They have 500/400 and are extremely remote. If only you were their neighbors it would be so easy to put a signal on your land. They laid over a kilometer of fiber line when they expanded the electricity grid so 300 down/200up in a 100 meter radius at the 8 power stations around the land. I was getting speed tests of 200/100 at 150 meters from an access point we put 7 meters up a tree with clear line of sight. The slower speed tests had a lot more usage on the system from the initial 500/400 numbers, 100 people vs 30 people using the wifi. If you want to expand down the road to fiber I could help you out, just shoot me an email.

*Whoosh all that went over me head... but still good to watch and learn. Hope it all works out well for you. In NZ we are slowly being forced off our Copper phone landlines for Broadband etc over to Fibre Broadband. So for me it may mean a new Modem (at a cost) if my one is not acceptable and get new landline phone/s to replace my ones that are only a few years old. Then no longer able to ring out for emergency's or 0800 and 0508 numbers as old phones are connected to the copper line. They expect everyone to own smart cell phones (using data), but they haven't taken into account that there are many oldies or rural folks that have landlines or wont be able to get fibre laid to their homes.! The joys of technology..!!!!.*

In Tigre in Argentina I had 20 Mbps, a company promised 50, but it was fake. In Barajas in Madrid I measured 50. I selected Coimbra just because of this issue. Here I have 50 Mbps guaranteed since December 2021, with peaks of 140. In Lisbon - Saldanha I measured the same values, but in the suburbs of Lisbon you´ll get lousy values. Madeira seems even better with 500 Mbps. Your Starlink values are impressive, and your cost is very atractive. Thank you for the report. ¡Congrats!

No utilities are regulated in the modern era. That's why fuel, gas and electricity prices have gone through the roof recently. Whenever demand exceeds supply the price goes nuts. Free market works fine until....

@@Techa-lo2dc Yes, Utilities are not regulated especially since many are in private hands. But I disagree on the usefulness of the free market when it comes to critical infrastructure and natural monopolies. While the free market works well for making my jeans, the profit motive should never touch healthcare ... just one example.

How was you 4G service with Meo in terms of reception? Beter than Vodafone? Maybe you shouldn't have switched to Vodafone without making sure their service in your area was good. Also, wirelessly is the most innacurate way to test internet speeds. 17:06 - Beware of how you read those results: the upload speed from your phone to the router might be 183 Mbps but the router will only upload at 41 Mbps to the internet. I don't trust anything that comes from low orbit satellites, the only satellite services I trust are the TV services because the satellites are on a fixed orbit and even so, adverse weather conditions can cause temporary or intermittent disruptions to the service, so keep that in mind now that we're going into Autumn and Winter.

Not much far away from where you guys live, my parents have a small house in a village in Mação. When I go there I use Vodafone's 4G LTE and it works great, and I was using about 10GB a day, only with 2 or 3 bars. ADSL on these places is usually a scam. We have had terrible service from MEO. It doesn't help the area is classified as a NC (No competition) zone. They don't make any effort to even fix any malfunctions

I’m in Norfolk, Virginia, USA and with my wireless 5G network I’m getting 185 mbps download and 27 mbps upload. So for your circumstances you’re doing pretty good. By the way, I pay $50 US dollars per month for unlimited download at these speeds.

We had the same problem initially with our address, but then we used the Google maps plus code and that worked. Took about 8 days to arrive, from Germany. We didn’t get the Ethernet adaptor but will get that when we move it to the house (just using WiFi for now)

I've been interested in Starlink for a long time (available 2023 in my area of the US). Thanks for your video, you guys are great! I know you both work some online, will either of you be connecting to a corporate VPN? I need to connect to one for work and would love to know how the latency affects it. I know non-Starlink satellite internet doesn't do well with a VPN.

VPN should work fine over Starlink... But some enterprise software are very latency and speed dependent... Usually there is a work-around that work will if you are prepared to try.

Starlink generally has good speed, but not necessarily good latency... So test it out...

Just started watching your channel and I am very impressed what's going on. So now I need to go back, way back in time to catch up but that's ok coz I have plenty of time hahaha. Starlink I have heard is very very good for any remote area in the World and that speed is just amazing!!

I have to agree 100% about the satisfaction you feel when you look at what you’ve accomplished. I am currently looking at recipes for lime cordial and will do it soon. I am in recovery mode now from working on our off grid property, which is a houseboat in the middle of a lake. I prepped and prepped and prepped our motor box, a steel structure 4’ deep into the water and 4’ wide and 6’ long, used 2 part epoxy....so happy that’s done and it looks fantastic, thank god!
