How are people like us (originally from the UK and Australia) able to move to Portugal and buy property? Do we have to have dual citizenship or do we have to give up being British? How can UK citizens move to Portugal after Brexit and how did we get our residency? We'll address all these points and more in the first video of our new Q&A series.

Loved how you presented the Q&A! I noticed that our ears are more inclined to listen and absorb information when the Q&A's are done in different settings instead of just sitting on a couch/chairs going through the questions. I liked how you shorten the time span, instead of a hour or more. Well done! Looking forward to next Monday's Q&A! ! ❤️

We moved to Portugal last year from the US, after applying for and receiving the D7 Visas, essentially for early retirement to do something else in life. Since we have zero income, and will not be able to receive retirement for some 13 years, our savings was perfectly acceptable. It surely helped that we bought our house in Portugal prior to applying. In this type of case, the savings is sufficient if you can support yourself at a minimum standard. The range is likely 10-14k per year for a couple, but it is a moving target. The savings needs to be but enough basic income to live for at least several years without.
@MAKEDOGROW

Interesting. I’d heard it wasn’t acceptable .... but like many things in the Portuguese system it probably depends who was processing your visa 😀

I had wondered about this :nods:. I am English and my missus is American so neither of us are classed as EU Citizens {shakes fist at Brexit vote} and that means either Golden Visa {laughter} or D7's. My works pension is not sufficient for the D7 {I *don't* want to talk about it! :lol:} and my State pension is eight years away but, if we sold up here and bought a modest house in Portugal we would easily have enough in savings to carry us through those eight years. So, given that, it was a bit frustrating to keep running into the necessity for 'income' to qualify for the D7 when money would not actually be an issue in the real, non-bureaucratic, world. Hearing that there may be a path through after all is very encouraging.

I got Italian residency in 2014, as an EU national. did all the paperwork and driving licence stuff in the first few weeks after getting here. My partner is Italian so when the bloody government finally passed a civil union law in 2016 we did the necessary ceremony (even though we've been together 20 years we never got round to getting married) and now I have long-term residency and have applied for my citizenship, which, like all things Italian, takes a very long time, involves reams of paper and costs a lot. Love the border edging. I shall steal the idea for my poly tunnel borders if you don't mind.

The flower bed is just beautiful. Looking forward to seeing it bloom and thrive! Special request: I'm fascinated by the roses growing around your property. Can you please show them some time? I mean, instead of just hurrying past, zoom in on the plants, and on the blooms. I might be able to identify them--or not. But I'd so love to see them properly. Or maybe do a bloom tour of the property for the sake of flower maniacs like me. I saw some yellow flowers along a boundary in one video--looked like wildflowers--and I'd love to see closeups of them, whether or not you can identify them.

Hi Kylie and Guy, You guys are awesome. As Kylie mentioned about applying the residencia at the camara that's what I found online that Brits can still do. Can you sort of confirm! I have just seen this post online: (Portugal If you are an EU citizen, you are free to live and work in any EU country. For UK citizens who want residency, it’s a bit more complicated - but not impossible. When moving to Portugal from the UK after Brexit, non-EU rules apply. You’ll need to request a residence permit and then you can apply for permanent residency after living there for five years. Applying for a residence card If you intend to stay in Portugal more than six months, you must register this with the local town hall (camara) within one month of your 90th day in Portugal and receive a residence card. The document that you need to obtain is often referred to as “residencia”, but the correct name for this is the Certificado de registo de cidadao da uniao Europeia. This is usually issued for an initial five years and if you are still resident after this time, you can apply for permanent residency. According to the official instructions, you must visit the camara with just your passport and be prepared to sign and declare that you either: have work in Portugal are self-employed have sufficient funds to support yourself and your family have valid medical insurance This documentation is usually sufficient, but in some cases, new residents have been asked for other documents as wide-ranging as bank statements, translated employment contracts, and social security declarations. So, it’s best to take a huge folder of all imaginable paperwork, just in case) Can you relate to this! Thanks in advance for your help 😊

The process outlined here is correct for EU citizens but no longer applies to the UK. UK citizens need to apply for a visa first, like all non-EU citizens
