Glad I found your post. I need to run about 88ft. for my wall connector. The Tesla manual said to use 6 gauge. With the Voltage calculator, drop will be limited to 1.56% or less with a 6 AWG.I wanted to try the 4AWG. The Voltage drop will be limited to 1.01% or less with a 4 AWG copper conductor delivering a total of 48 amps on a 240 volt single phase system for a distance of 88 feet. So thanks for your post I will subscribe. 😉

Great video, the only thing I would add is Run 1 inch conduit instead of 3/4 inch conduit based on fill calculations for the 2023 National Electric Code.

This is very helpful. In Los Angeles - and probably all of California - they offer a $ 1,000 rebate for the charger and installation but will NOT give a rebate unless it's installed by a licensed electrician. Also, as of this post, LADWP will NOT give a rebate on a white charger, they only rebate the J1772, which is the black charger. Go figure. I am told that will be changing, eventually, but just be advised.

if youre using THHN wire, I believe the 6awg is rated for 75amps, so should be good. If romex, yeah go 4 awg, 6 awg romex is only rated for 55 amps. What gauge ground are you using? I was reading you only need a 10awg ground wire for a 60amp circuit, but curious if people are going lower.

60a breaker takes too much load for my house. I only have a 100a panel. Can I use a 30a instead. I don’t mind the slow charge.

That 6-2 wire is not rated for 60 amps, that number 4 that you are now using needs to be in a 1 inch pipe. Number 6 thhn rated for 90 (C) is correct. Tesla does the math for you or FLA X 1.25 = breaker size. So 48x1.25=60amp breaker. According to my "electricians bible app" #6 - less than 3 current carrying conductors - wire rated at 90 c - derated ampacity = 60amps. #6 NM is rated for only 55 amps, you might want to adjust your breaker size. I would suggest buying the paid app for the Electricians Bible it really comes in handy, like having a code book on your phone.

@rob So for three #4 THHN wire you need a 1 inch conduit. How about If i use two #4 THHN and one #6 THHN wire (for ground) what size conduit would that be? Thanks for your help!

I would use at least 1” conduit. Bigger is easier to pull and safer for when the wires heat up.

@@arielramos2922 my app on my phone says one inch pipe for what you are asking. Something to consider with this Tesla gen 3 is you pick the amps for the charger via the charger setup menu. If you don't need the full beans charge use smaller gauge wire. Example, looking at the Tesla gen 3 chart you can go to 50 amp breaker max full load amps is 40. You go from 34 miles of charge per hour to 29 miles for a Model S. Is 5 miles per hour of charge so bad for a overnight charge?.

Hey Anil. I bought the 4 gauge wire from Lowes. You have to buy it by the foot for each L1 and L2 (run both wires and then your ground also). So you I’ll have 3 individual wires ran through your conduit. I don’t think you can buy it all wrapped into one. Hope that helps.

Top Tip DO NOT BUY A TESLA HOME CHARGER. Do not buy a Tesla wall charger, get a different kind. Tesla wall charger aren't as good as many of the cheaper ones available. Payless to get a better quality charger plus Tesla has no customer support, so when you get a defective Tesla wall charger no one from Tesla will help you

@@usinebob grizzl-e level 2 the $395 dollar one. A friend of mine purchase their $495 version and it's nice but I personally don't think about it. There's nicer. I think there's $395 one is the best bang for your buck. No issues at all. Even in an Ice storm and a week that never got above 15 and spent most of the time at 0 and below.

Not buying this "TOP TIP". The "State of Charge" video guy on youtube actually says the Tesla charger is the BEST. He runs chargers through a barrage of tests, drop, cold, heat, etc. I have one, and have never had any issues with it, and it was super easy to install, and has built-in gfci protection. Tesla offers a 4 year warranty - who else does that, and its the only charger that I am aware of that accepts #4 AWG. That alone tells you that Tesla chargers are the best built/engineered units. If you get a defective one, which I suspect is an extremely unlikely probability in the first place - just return it. At $425.00 for that kind of quality, and a 24 foot cable; I doubt that there is a better charger right now.
