I watch a lot of this connector videos and I don’t understand why 99% of people land the wires on the breaker first , it’s always a good practice to always land your wires on the load side first for safety purposes just in case you have a faulty breaker or in case someone accidentally turns the breaker on while you’re landing wires on the wall connector after you have landed wires on the breaker. Just my honest opinion. 🙏🏽✌🏽

The Install seems clean but NEC prohibits single conductors without conduit in the wall. (4/3 romex could have been used without using the white wire). Also NEC requires 3 ft clearance on the panel and the Tesla controller appears to be in the way of the bottom right corner; otherwise good video.

You could also use some #6 AWG NM (non metallic (Romex)) cable in this application, but not individual wires taped up. Also need a Romex connector where the NM cable goes into the wall connector.

@@ericjorgensen4826 No you can't use Romex 6/2, unless you limit the breaker to 50 amps. Romex 6awg is only rated to 60c ampacity, which is 55amps. For this application, to get the full charge rate, you need a 60 amp breaker. Proper design capacity is 80% of the breaker, as being your actual load which is 48 amps.

I'm concerned about these installations and giving people bad information. THHN cable inside walls requires conduit. The electrical tape wrap you did is not going to meet code. It would have been simple to install a short piece of plastic conduit in this installation by just making the hole size in the wall a bit larger and inserting it through the wall and fastening it on both ends (service box and wall charger). I believe you could have used 6-2 Romex without conduit and been just fine but it is supposed to be strain relieved with a fastener. Some of the strands of wire on the red conductor were both nicked and removed on the second cut which is a no-no also as this reduces ampacity.
@christophertilley4297
@christophertilley4297 2 жыл бұрын
I researched this extensively. 6/2 Romex doesn’t have the ampacity. It’s rated at 55 amps for short duration loads and only 44 amps continuous. The charger can do 48amps. I ended up using 6/2 MC cable as it can be run like romex, but for this short distance, who cares about conduit? Also noticed the wrong clamps used, but yet again, for this distance who cares. He practically installed it less than a foot from the panel.

You can make an account for free to read the NEC online. Most people don’t know what the code is and therefore don’t follow it.
@brianbeasley7270
@brianbeasley7270 7 ай бұрын
@@christophertilley4297 The EVSE can be provisioned to accept a 50 Amp breaker and 40 Amp continuous, so Romex is OK as long as that is how the EVSE and circuit is provisioned. For 48 Amps, THHN in conduit should be used. Code certainly cares about conduit for THHN cables inside walls.

A little nit pick here. It would be safer to fully wire the charger prior to wiring the panel. The chances of the breaker being switched are minimal, but with the panel open and right above where you are working, they do exist.

@@evdave528 Romex is only rated for 60c temperature, that said 6awg is only rated for 55amps@60c. If using Romex, it must be 4awg for your 2 poles and 8awg for the ground. You can use 6awg THHN wire in a smurf tube, but you must also make sure your breaker is rated for at least 75c temp. If all your components are rated for 75c or higher, than you're good for 65amps and should be fine.

@@Zazupii Even THHN cable @90c is only rated for 55amps. 8awg Romex is only rated for 40 amps. You're going to burn your house down running Romex. You can get away with THHN because the charger only uses 48amps max, which is under the 55amp rating. But that's not following the design code of 80% load. You're flirting with danger using THHN 8awg and fire is very possible using Romex 8awg.
