Thank you for posting this video! Super helpful! I was at a loss about how to repair a broken pilot feed on our old furnace. Purchased the connectors and tube in your video and the repair took about 10 minutes. Your expertise and sharing is greatly appreciated!

GFM tutorials are excellent, in depth, and easy to understand. Watching all his vids closely, especially with mobile home furnaces and gas valves, saved me $900! All the young, so called repairmen, are nothing but replacemen. My Coleman is 39. I had no less than 3 or 4 companies the past two years send techs who didn't know how to light my old pilot or give a definite diagnosis if the gas valve was bad. Replace the entire system they all said to the tune of 11 and 12gs! Following GFM vids I was able to successfully replace my gas valve, pilot tubing and thermocouple. With the money I saved buying the gas valve online rather than a local supplier, i bought tools i needed including a gas leak detector. Also checked w bubbles to be safe. Its been 2 weeks and we should be set for the colder months ahead!

Just replaced the pilot burner/igniter and gas delivery tube on the heater side of my 26 year old HVAC unit. Thanks to your video I was able to make the gas connections with no leakage problems. It fired right up and we have heat again. Appreciate you sharing your knowledge and techniques. You rock grayfurnaceman!!

grayfurnaceman I had the same - leaking along tubing after removing and putting it back in. Oil worked great but is it a long term solution like pipedope. I picture pipedope being a more permanent seal? Any thoughts?

It has been long term for me. Because it reduces friction, it concentrates more torque on the seating surface. GFM

Best way I learned is to screw the ferrule into the gas valve by finger tight and then put the tube into the feral with a mark on on the tube for the depth and then tighten it up with a wrench to snap the federal off there's no way you can cross threaded doing it that way

Thanks! Was having a terrible time understanding how the fitting was working based on instructions I was reading for a set of gas logs and a Dexen 6003 millivolt pilot valve. In this case the tube didn't go through the end of the fitting and was just flush with the end but it still worked and I heard it break off.

Tightening brass into aluminum is scary. Do you expect to feel the ferrel to break 100% of the time or sometimes can it seal without breaking off the fitting? Excellent video.

Can they be reused, or must a new breakaway ferrel be used if the tubing is being reattached? If new, then I suppose that means trimming an inch or so off the end of the tubing.
@grayfurnaceman Жыл бұрын
If you are simply removing the tubing assembly for component replacement, they can be reused if there are no leaks. If it must be replaced, you must either cut the end off and, if the tubing is straight, reuse it or replace the entire pilot tube and fittings. GFM

Hi! Is the breakway piece supposed to actually ‘snap’ off? I have a similar pilot valve that is using 3/16” aluminum tubing and the respective 3/16” brass breakway ferrule. I tighten until I begin to strip the hexagonal shape and then I stop in order not to strip it anymore. However, the aluminum tubing is still moving freely in and out of the breakway ferrule piece. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Quick question! When replacing the thermocouple unit on my gas fireplace I overtightened the nut on the pilot tube and the pilot tube broke off. I thought it was 1/4 but that’s too big. I have everything to connect the 1/4 in aluminum pilot tube-is there a way to use an adapter to size down to 1/8? Or is it best if I try to find a 1/8 pilot tube and fittings?
@grayfurnaceman3 жыл бұрын
I would be looking for the 1/8" tube. GFM

If the threads start crossing, do you think it's possible to clean them up with a die/tap? are they NPT threads?
@grayfurnaceman Жыл бұрын
They are not NPT. If you have a set of taps and dies, you can look for the right TPH and maybe it will work but I would change the fitting. GFM

Wonder why no tape or thread sealant used on the pilot gas tube?
@grayfurnaceman3 жыл бұрын
You can use oil on the threads to reduce friction on the threads, but the threads do not seal. You can also apply a very small amount of thread sealer to the ferrel surface that may help. GFM

So when it breaks off, you leave the broken part in the valve, or do you take it out remove the broken piece and reinstall?

So once it breaks off is it "tight enough"? Can you just go straight to pipe dope? Also might be helpful to rename title to "breakaway ferrel for pilot" so people can find it easier using google :)
@grayfurnaceman4 жыл бұрын
I generally ignore when it breaks off as I have been doing this for so long that I just feel the torque. For someone without that feel, I guess it would just have to be "snug" then check for leaks. Yes, you can use pipe dope (sparingly) to start with. I will see what I can do about the search. GFM

What do you mean exactly by "breaking off the fitting" ? Does the section of tubing beyond the ferrel break off? Can you disconnect the fitting from the valve and re-install it ?
@rgs16286 жыл бұрын
No the aluminum tube does not break off. The brass ferrule fitting (aka "breakaway" fitting) breaks into 2 pieces. When the fitting is tightened, the ferrule (flared part) breaks away at the narrow point where it is connected the the threaded part of the fitting, and then the ferrule portion ends up tightly griping and sealing the tubing. Yes, you can disconnect the fitting/tube from the gas valve and then reinstall it as many times as you like, as long as it still seals. You would have to put a new "breakway" ferrule fitting on the aluminum tube if the surface on the old ferrule was damaged and you could not get it to seal.
