@acservicetech - what would you suggest looking at for a gas fireplace that sometimes pilot light works sometimes not, however when it does light properly, it will only run for a few minutes before it makes a noise & shuts off both the fireplace & the pilot light. After this happens, it won't relight the pilot. It will light, most of the time but only for a few minutes sometimes only 30 secs. Then shuts off everything. Almost like a safety is engaging unnecessarily. Any ideas?

This is by far one of the best videos and channels i found - by far. We would really appreciate some help with the following question. We have a pizza shop at Union City NJ and our oven is acting up. The pilot keeps on going off in the middle of pizza cooking we do not know if it is the thermocouple or the safety valve. When we test both are ok! Are safety valve brands and thermocouple brand differ? In one oven we have different brands for safety valve, Invensys and Robert Shaw. To my knowledge the theromcouple are also Robert Shaw. Not sure if those brands are good for our application or the community recommend other brands or combinations. Much much appreciate any help - thanks

I'm an elderly lady who's heat went off two nights ago. My son suggested searching KZbin for trouble-shooting videos (duh--why didn't I think of that!) before he gets here to try to light it. Now I've watched this, I'm pretty sure one of the thermo-couplers is bad, AND the little valve-thingy that springs back up when the right temperature is reached, is bad. Dang, I'm glad he's willing to come help, but I'm kind of pretty sure we'll have to replace those two things before I'll get any heat. But--wanted to compliment you on a video that even a little old lady could follow/understand (pretty much, LOL) Thank you, sir.

Great video. Very well done. Thanks for taking the time to make it. Another reason why pilot flame won't stay lit is because thermocouple nut that threads into gas valve is too tight. I would light my pilot and it would stay on for a few hours but then go out again. I was pretty sure the thermocouple was good because I had just replaced it months earlier. Before replacing it, I loosened the thermocouple nut 1/16 of a turn, then lit the pilot and it stayed lit. It's been working fine for the last 2 years.

Thank You , Thank You. For eighteen years I have never been able to figure out why every two or three years the pilot light won’t on our furnace won’t stay lite. Finding and paying technicians in our area is hard to say the least. I did not have steel wool so I used some fine sand paper to polish the thermal couple and to my delight the pilot stayed on. Saved me much time and money and kept my kids warm. All the best to you sir. Mystery solved for years to come. Literally kept me up at night each fall worrying about it as summer came to a close.

I greatly appreciate this video. Last night a good friend of mine informed me that after calling somebody to fix her heater, they gave her some technical talk without even really trying and then basically concluded that the the unit had to be replaced. But after your video (and one other) & merely taking one of your 10 steps, we got the pilot lit and she has heat again! Yay! And being that it's been like 40 freaking degrees with some disrespectful winds, it was a necessity, as well as a pleasantly accomplished feeling. She even wanted to call it quits after 1 attempt, and I joked "now where would Nikola Tesla be if he gave up after one try?" Lol. Moments later I had it working. Thank you for helping me help a friend out. She's been there for me tremendously lately so it was nice that I can help her out with something worthwhile. Cheered me up to see her all happy and giddy. Much love!

Thank you!!! Super informative and useful video, it helped me understand a lot of things about the real way this system works. I have a Regency gas fireplace insert (propane) that had been fine for many years but the pilot light recently would not stay lit. Nothing had changed but the root of the problem was that there was not enough flame coming from the pilot head to reach the thermocouple and keep the solenoid on. Some cleaning and a little prying to open things up and I'm back online. Once again thank you so much for taking the time to make this detailed and instructive tutorial. The comments show how awesome it is, has saved people countless $$. When it comes to heating it could even save lives.

Overall a very good detailed video. One thing I come across quite often in the field is a combination of a weak solenoid and weak thermocouple. Thermocouples usually produce more millivolts when new and then weaken a little over a few days to a few weeks to finally settle on their final millivolt number. As your video showed, a good solenoid will often stay open with only a few millivolts but one going bad may require 25 or so millivolts. I have often seen someone continually changing thermocouples every few weeks. Once I changed the valve their problems would go away since the new one only required a few millivolts. As you have shown, this can all be verified on a multimeter.

Hoping u can give me your opinion as to why my kitchen gas heater ( vented Williams heater probably 15 years old ) keeps going out after about 36-48 hours of running. I have same heater in living room ( ten feet away from each other ) that works fine. Both connect to Honeywell thermostat. For w.e reason the kitchen pilot just goes out. It will lite fine and stay on for a day or two, then it just goes out. The heaters were off for 7-8 months just lit them and only one stays lit. Any advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank u in advance.

Yes, excellent, concise and professional instruction. Maybe not the place to share this but I sense experts here. A few of the more esoteric and unplanned issues for the old pro or engineer involve detecting when there is an unusual localized air current around a given pilot which pushes the flame off the thermocouple--usually you can see it blowing, or see it shifting when a guard is brought close. How to figure and add a base draft shield for vertical drafts or side draft shield safely for the pilot without impeding it's function is a talent. Twice I found an additional combustion air inlet draft brake was needed to preserve the pilot. We're certainly not supposed to have to do that kind of stuff--the anomalies. Some modern sealed water heaters can get clogged inlet combustion air filters or may get rust flakes occluding the inlets on the bottom of the chamber creating a very wandering and sluggish main burner flame which overheats and shuts the pilot and everything down. Some sealed chamber water heaters chop off the air supply to stop the unit when the over-heat limit gets tripped and figuring out that that is what happened is obnoxious. The draft hood at the base of the flue is supposed to dampen most through-the-unit draft effects but they're not always 100% effective. An evacuating type chimney cap can aid to offset the down draft when the outdoor wind creates the ram/lee effect over the home forcing the downdraft of chimneys and flues. The most phenomenal pilot issue I've ever seen I called the Shadrak. The pilot assembly and airflow formed a cold-air vortice up and around the 350mv (low-voltage system) thermo"pile". I had to use a mA meter and a mV meter simultaneously to read what the thermocouple was doing. Carefully recording, replacing it twice with two brand new thermopiles. I was mad at the supplier, I thought I was getting dud thermocouples. It cooled so cool until it dropped out, even though I could visually see it in the flame with the flame corona across it's upper section. Never, never had I seen that, never will again; a base shield against vertical drafts solved it. One more bad pilot issue I've encountered could be called "cold pocket" where at the wrong cold temperature, a pilot in a sealed combustion system can use up it's air supply before establishing a draft; it's rare and the manufacturer hasn't been able to beat it either. But no worries mate, you got it, it's covered, keep it up, it'll be ok, have back-up heat and go to a friend's house if need be.

This is so informative! Omg… I now know more about my gas fireplace than the technician that came to my house yesterday to look at it. They just told us we needed a new fireplace…. I was able to get it going by warming up the thermocouple with my lighter and now I know… from this video that the pilot flame is too small/low so when it cools off I will have to check to see where the valve is to turn up the flame on the pilot! I’ll be sure to save this video for future issues! Thank you so much!😊 saved me lots of money!

Organized, fluent, concise, accurate = great video. I'm just an average homeowner and have encountered and solved all of these problems over the years except misdirected air currents. My boiler is 35 yo and still going strong. Kept my central air units going through 46 yr. of good service. Though I did have to take a test and get a license to handle refrigerants. Subscribed.

Great video. You mentioned a 30mv thermocouple. How do you know what mv thermocouple to use on a particular application? It it stated somewhere?
@acservicetechchannel

That is just the standard thermocouple that is usually used unless the unit runs on a 750mv thermopile/powerpile, thanks Roger!

Excellent video. It gave me the confidence to troubleshoot my Faber gas fire - the pilot wasn't staying lit. The pilot flame wasn't contacting the thermocouple. Using a tyre pump for compressed air, I cleared out the pilot tube and vacuumed around the area and now it's working again.

Hello! Your video is really informative and well thought out, thank you! I believe that our problem (with the pilot light on the water heater) is wind. Every year between October and April we have to continue to relight the water heater (could be a couple times a day, could be once every few days). This issue doesn’t seem to happen during the warmer months. We live in a condo and our appliance is in a temperature controlled attached garage. So would you recommend adjusting the proximity of the thermocouples to the pilot light? Thank you in advance, I’m excited to try and fix this reoccurring annoyance!
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 жыл бұрын
There may not be any adjustment except the pilot flame adjustment screw. If it is wind then you may have too large of an exhaust. That is a common problem when the exhaust is 4 or 5" when it should be 3" if that is the size the manufacturer specifies, thanks

Years ago I lived in a split level house and in the winter the wind would blow over the peak of the roof and down the chimney and blow out the pilot in the furnace. We had to rework the opening of the chimney to divert the wind.

Im on my first year apprenticeship and this video has a lot of information to learn and I really appreciate you sharing this. Quick question, is the solenoid replaceable or can be fixed if stuck (do you have a video for this?) or the whole gas valve has to be replaced with a new one? Thanks in advance.
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 5 жыл бұрын
Usually we replace the whole gas valve. The solenoid gasket could be hung up and we have faster access to a replacement combination gas valve, thanks

Great info!!! Mike in LA, Calif Got this problem now.... I am sure it is producing a weak voltage.... Also, the external wire contacts are a weak point. If I just clean those frequently(disconnect/reconnect and wipe with alcohol wipe) the pilot will stay lit longer. Another issue can be that there is a draft that keeps blowing out the pilot!!! As in my case the way it is set up in the wall there seems the be a natural air draft(I'm on a 2nd level apt) in the wall shaft where this Williams double sided wall furnace is located.
