Quick question if the porch sealing is covered with plywood do I still need to nail the shiplap to the 2x4. Or can I just nail it to plywood
@MattFreytag2 жыл бұрын
I would still recommend nailing into the ceiling joists if at all possible.

How did you attach the trim boards until the T and G. Is that hardy plank siding?
@MattFreytag6 ай бұрын
I don’t think I am understanding your question! The siding on house is LP smartside the soffit is hardie the porch beams are wrapped in 1/4” hardie soffit and the 1 x 4 and other trim is mirtec

Custom color looks like Minwax Special Walnut stain. You can use a compact router with flush trim bit to cut out those can lights
@MattFreytag4 ай бұрын
@@Alphasig336 I believe I had the color mixed to match my mahogany front door. Im not a fan of min wax products. I bet router would work good but id probably mess it up. If you mean cut it out like you would sheetrock. There is no way i could install the T and G then cut them out.

My patio cedar ceiling is rough finish. What do you recommend to oil it and how to apply it?
@MattFreytag3 жыл бұрын
You could definitely use the same products as what I did but I would think the rough cedar may take the stain more darker than the wood in my video since it’s rough. May not show the grain the same. I have seen people use linseed oil but I would do a little research on that because I have never used it. Thanks for watching hope this helps a little.

That looks great. I’m about to do 300sq ft of Meranti T&G soffit like this. I’m curious if you had to leave any gap around the perimeter for expansion if you weren’t covering it with crown?

What is the best thing to use to sand with after you get your coat of polyurethane to get the smooth feel?
@MattFreytag2 жыл бұрын
I don't sand the tongue and groove at all since you don't ever touch it. it has a good looking finish how it is. If I were to sand it I would use my surfprep air sander with a medium grit pad!

Great video… we’re about to do the same thing but curious why water born versus oil clear?
@MattFreytag3 жыл бұрын
Paint store recommend me try it and it’s ease of use. Easy cleanup, less toxic fumes, quick to dry and re-coat. It has held up well and looks the same now as when I applied it.
@leadchange4153 жыл бұрын
@@MattFreytag our PPG store is recommending oil based so was curious.
@MattFreytag3 жыл бұрын
@@leadchange415 I guess it’s just matter of opinion since I use the PPG store as well. Lol. I also used the same Deft Waterborne Clear for my interior stair treads, hand rails, mahogany front door, and front and back porch posts which are white pine.

Hey Matt, did you coat both sides of the pine planks before installing on the ceiling?
@MattFreytag4 жыл бұрын
Rani Gill Great Question! I did not coat both side nor did I stain both sides. I did stain the edges in the case of expansion and contraction so you wouldn’t see raw wood. I considered sealing both sides and the ends after cutting to length to minimize moisture absorption but did not. Thanks for the comment and for watching my video! I hope this helps.

Hey buddy Great job I like to ask you how can you install a plank celling boards on a second floor porch that have a regular decking boards; I thing water will go thru. What do you recommend
@MattFreytag4 жыл бұрын
Edgar Morales Thanks! You would have to install some kind of deck gutter or drainage system. Look them up you will find something that would work. I have never seen one in person or installed one but have heard of other builders have success with them. Thanks for the comment and view.

I’m debating using some sort of exterior deck stain vs what you did, which is more of an interior finish because mine too is under a ceiling outdoors, but not directly exposed to sun. Do you think the finish will hold up through humidity changes of the outdoors?
@MattFreytag5 жыл бұрын
Matthew Funk I’m sure it would hold up if you are using an exterior product! The stain I used was interior but the water base poly was an exterior or interior product. I did not seal all sides so the moisture could still enter or exit the wood I used causing expansion and contraction but I would be willing to bet no one would ever be able to see it
