You waffle on Leo. It not only helps others with chronic pain, but highlights what you go through just to complete a task that’s simple to able bodied people. It’s not the speed at which you complete it, it’s the satisfaction that you did it. Just remember a couple of years ago if you had said I’m going to build a shed, you would have said no way can I do that. Keep up the brilliant videos.

Thanks David and yes what you said at the end certainly helps to give things a little perspective. Two years ago I was making candle holders so yes I suppose I have progressed a little 😂😂. Thanks for your kind words again, I do need to gain a more balanced view of my approach to activities and pain. It’s going to take a while, but I guess most other things do as well 🤔👍

As others have said Leo, it takes as long as it takes mate. My other half has suffered with chronic pain for best part of 40 years (Chrohns Disease and more recently Fibromyalgia). She and I have learnt that some days are total non starters....your body just says "No you're not doing what you planned or anything else for that matter today!" and you just have to say "well there's another day tomorrow....or even the next day....or the day after that if needed!!". I know it's tough mate but pacing yourself is the best way forward. Remember that slow and steady gets there eventually too - plus with less mistakes and possible accidents as well (speaking from hard learned experience there lol). Keep going mate. You'll get there. All the best. Gaz in Leeds.

Thanks Gaz once again for your great feedback. I can’t believe how difficult it’s been trying to adjust my mind to what is and isn’t possible now. It’s almost like relearning everything and accepting the changes for what they are and trying not to get caught up in all the frustration, anger, fear, guilt etc. I think I’m getting better at it now, but will take years to adjust. Take care pal, Leo 😀👍

Over a year on Bron and these windows are still perfectly fine. Think it’s really important to have the space with the packers and expanding foam so the windows don’t get ‘squeezed’ by the timber due to movement 👍👍

Came back from holiday and the window of my garage/workshop is falling apart. It’s a really old wooden frame window and the recent bad weather has caused it to start to crumble. Woohoo, bloody ripper, mate. 👍🏽 5 days is only a long time if you say it is... The hardest lesson to learn and really apply to the rest of your life is, don't compare, just do at your pain tolerance and absolutely listen to your body!😉 I'm hitting my 4th year and still haven't completed my shed, and I'm ok with that, there is only me doing the work, and I'm very limited too, so work around a take time, as you're well aware. Hats off to you, awesome job.👌🏽

Great stuff, as usual, Leo! I loved learning that I could install windows too. LIke yours, mine were second hand/samples from a retired salesman. Two were double-glazed sash-type (150mm deep...!) and three upvc. Really satisfying to fit them - needed help with the first two - wooden frames and 1200 X 1400! The workshop is really coming on - all the stuff now is gravy after the hard graft of framing, etc. I'm certain it'll be worth it all. I don't know about you but I find myself standing in my workshop looking around and shaking my head - amazed that it was possible for me to do it. I so admire your fortitude and persistence. I have no personal experience with chronic pain beyond what I've read and heard. I'm so glad you're getting helpful treatment. Best aye!

I don't care if it takes a year (though I can see that would be frustrating for you) to build the shed, that's not the point. Comparing ourselves with others just distracts us from our own goals. So glad you've hooked up with pain management AND those windows look great. P.S. Thanks Ronan, I bought those clamps from one of the Chinese distributors like Banggood. They are a rip off of a more expensive (but similar) design that are used to lift the likes of washing machines etc. What might be better (and cheaper) for you are a set of air wedges from the likes of Trend. So much what all the other commenters have said before, slow and steady wins the race. There's no deadline here (i assume), and it's all good content along the way so keep to what you have the brainspace and the go for, it'll come together in the end that's for sure, and it's a massive achievement already. I have a few friends with similar issues, CFS/Chronic pain/Crohns and I hope that science will eventually win out and come up with something that actually works, but in the meantime it's all coping and management and painkillers to take the edge off. All the best!

I’d love to be in, with power and a basic setup on the go by the end of July, but it’s not the end of the world if that doesn’t happen. Chronic pain side of stuff is more difficult to manage than the physical limitations as it can just consume everything about you. Today I've skimmed through your vids but now I've subsribed I intend to watch them all, particularly the ones on your roof as one of the issues I'm trying to fathom out is how I can achieve a maximum internal head height. My build is for my son to use and hes 6'3. My family is working through a different kind of pain and I need my son to have his own private space.

Hello Steve, very kind of you to post such a lovely comment👍👍. Good luck with your build adventures. As you can see I’m certainly so expert, just an enthusiastic learner trying to make things work for me. The angle of pitch on the roof might help a little with gaining some fractions on the roof height. Mine is 6 degrees but you would probably be fine with 4 degrees of pitch. Is your build restricted to 2.5m in height? Check with permitted regulations, but my understanding is if your garden room is over 2 metres away from the neighbours boundary wall you can go up to 3m in height for a single pitch roof.
@steveherbert2921
@steveherbert2921 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hand-i-Craft Hi Leo. Yes I would like to keep my building under 2 .5 meters if I can and these SIP roofing solutions look like a neat way to workaround the warm roof, cold roof, hybrid roof nightmares. The 2 meters from the boundary rule will mean I’d eat up a lot of garden space and I don’t have a lot to play with. Yes Im looking at roof pitching angles to see what I can get away with. I’m also investigating a sound proofing and insulation combo for the walls as my garden backs onto a road and my son records a lot of content for something called KZbin, you might have heard of it😂

Hi. Thanks for this it’s a great help and hope the chronic pain is being managed the best it can. I had a question on retrofitting a window into a timber structure. I’m worried about the frame swelling in winter and the pressure it will put on the Upvc windows. Do you have any thoughts/advice on what precautions I could take?
@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Hussain for the comment. I understand what your saying about the movement of the timber, but as I done in the video if you allow space around the frame of approximately 5mm, use packers to hold the frame in place and then use fixings to secure the window and then use expanding foam to fill the gap that will be fine and any movement will not ‘squeeze’ the windows 👍👍

Cracking job lad! Big wipes and spray should get the pvc looking as good as new. If not cladding for a while, I’d maybe get some uv protection over the pu foam, so it doesn’t perish. Or just leave it proud until ready to clad.. might still be good when you cut back.

Hi, one thing that I have bought that I put off for a long time because I thought it would be expensive was a laser level. I cannot tell you how much it helped me get level lines and putting windows in was a breeze compared to using a level, the difference was that with the laser you get a horizontal line and a vertical line at the same time. One bit of advice I would give is go for the green one, it is easier to see.

Thanks John and it’s really interesting you mention this now. Only two days ago I spoke to a joiner I follow on Instagram who has given me some excellent advice in the past and I was asking him about laser levels and what brand etc. I’ve got some affiliate money just come in and was thinking of buying one (there is a ton of unseen footage in this episode that may well explain why in the future). Anyway Lewis recommend self levelling and green as red doesn’t do too well outside apparently 🤷‍♂️. I’ve seen a Huepar model that currently has £50 off on Amazon so I think I’ll be going for that one 👍👍😀😀

Hi Leo, You have such an infectious smile! Glad you missed Pam's dad's hand with the staple gun! Looking good so far (8.08 in). Mike PS couldn't you adjust the depth of the staples with your gun? I can do this with my air nailer/stapler and after setting up it was fine for multifoil lnsulation ( how good the insulation is is another story!). Those windows certainly won't fall out!!!

Thanks Mike. I set my Ferrex Brad nail gun to its lowest setting and it was still just ripping through the Tyvek. Staple gun was much more gentle and suitable. Really happy with how this part of the project finished up. Had some really lovely feedback off folk who do this / have done this kind of job for years and how impressed they were with the quality. They’re better than the windows in our house😂😂

@@katabrontes Sorry Mike, didn’t explain myself very well. Yes, initially I was using my Ferrex brad nail gun, but it also fires staples as well so I had staples in it, but even on its lowest power setting the staples just ripped through the Tyvek. The ‘traditional’ Stanley wall stapler done the job great👍👍

@@Hand-i-Craft Hi Leo, That is odd. On mine if I turn down the air pressure and adjust the depth I can set the staples at almost any depth but maybe the battery guns are not so flexible as I assume the " power" can't be varied. The hand stapler must have been pretty hard work. Lidl do a small electric ( mains) stapler which is fine for upholstery and very light and cheap (about £12 I think). It does jam occasionally but we found it fine for fixing material onto a plywood former for a pelmet. It uses quite light " paper grade" staples but they should be fine to hold the membrane in place as it will be held fast once the boards are fixed over it. Mike

Hi again Leo. I hope a lot of GPs ( I am a long retired GP) watched your section on pain management and pacing. When I was practicing I had several patients with chronic pain and Post Viral FS , as we called it in those days (before 2000). Your simple advice and your example would have been inspiring then, as it is now. I suspect many doctors still have a lot to learn about pain management which is also, sadly, very inaccessible in today's NHS. Do you mentor others with chronic pain. If not, assuming you can find any time in your very busy life, would you consider this? You are an inspiration and a prolific source of very useful tips. Mike PS Where did you find that very nifty spreader clamp? Found it!

Wow, don’t know where to start with this comment Mike, apart from thank you firstly😀. I’m very lucky to be on this programme as I am under the umbrella of the Walton Centre and it was my consultant surgeon who recommended it to me. Very interesting to gain a better understanding from a physiotherapy, psychology and occupational therapy perspective, plus input from the surgeons team. It certainly has helped me to face the situation I’m in in a more realistic perspective. Just trying to get to the end of the day, have very little sleep / rest then just getting up and trying again simply long term is not sustainable. Neither is the boom / bust cycle of living. Over the coming weeks / months I need to make adaptations in my life to gain a more balanced way of living which hopefully will benefit the pain side of things and the mind. I haven’t mentored anyone in regards to chronic pain but maybe that is something to consider in the future. Take care Mike, those clamps btw I think will come in handy for a variety of uses👍

Foam gun tip! Stick a silicone tube nozzle on the end of your gun, just push it on hard and then gently hammer the tip flat and you can send the nozzle and foam deeper around the window. 👍

@Hand-i-Craft
@Hand-i-Craft Жыл бұрын
Not really pal. Texture wise it’s like baking paper. It has some kind of hair like substance in the fabric, if you hold it up to the light you can see it. It must be some kind of membrane as the wrap allows moisture to escape and prevents moisture from getting in

How would you retrofit a pvc window/door on a shed that already has cladding? The current window are just acrylic panels a boxed section between studs and extra strips to hold the window in pace plus sealant. How would I do flashing for the openings, given that cladding is nailed in place. there is a membrane, but these opening are just wood as the current scenario just has the window panels almost flush with the outside.
@Hand-i-Craft

Hello Paul, cheers for the message. In short I’m not sure tbh as I’ve never retro fitted upvc windows in place of previous single glazed ones? How thick are the walls and could they accept a complete double glazed unit like the ones I’ve fitted? That’s the first question you need to ask yourself and work around the remaining issues after that. If the answer to this first question is no then it is a non starter really

@@Hand-i-Craft thank you for replying really like the channel. Do it at your own pace don't worry about a thing online. Anyway the boxed depth is studs around 2" 7/8ths or 73mm then the current panes are held in with a small amount of trim and that plus pane thickness is just a little over the cladding thickness 18mm or 6/8ths. As you can imagine the panes are super thin which is why I want to do the windows and doors. The trim in the other direction is about the same width so wondering about how to attach flashing tape to membrane what I'm thinking is to remove the trim cut a small channel on the back of the cladding carefully using my multi/ossolating tool then insert strips of flashing tape into the channel to attach to the membrane Seal the gap and add trim filling gaps flashing tape all round. Then ready for PVC. Not sure about the cills may extend a bit but no biggie. In any case PVC windows and doors was an option with this shed but about double the retail price.

Nice one, thanks Joesph for the good advice and I’m still learning to live with the chronic pain and physical disability bit, even though it’s been over three years now. The crux of it is I need to stop judging myself now against what I used to be capable of doing and not what I’m capable of now. It sounds so simple, but most things so in theory😀.
