Thank you so much for these videos. My d35 is making serious noise and just turning the pinion by hand with the drive shaft disconnected is pretty rough and loud. I took a look and some of the gears are missing chunks about the size of a bb gun bb. I had decided on swapping a junkyard axle in but after watching these videos it doesn't look nearly as difficult to fix as online forums would suggest.

I’m working on my CJ Dana 30, I originally re-geared it about 20 years ago and it sat parked for most of the time since so very low miles on the regear. I’m no going back through the whole jeep and decided to put an LSD in. I’m using the original housing, original gears, new bearings and obviously the carrier. Spent about 4 hours last night ripping my hair out because I couldn’t get the pattern to move. It’s basically the whole flank of the tooth. Slept on it and found your video. I measured the two carriers at a machine shop and the bearing to ring face and bearing to bearing measurements are identical (within 0.001”). Should I just put the original shim stacks in and just run it?

If all you are changing is the carrier, then you shouldn't have to change anything else. If you're using the old bearings, that might be the reason for the pattern oddities. I would put it all back together the way it was when you pulled it out.

Started my own Plumbing business couple years ago. Obviously a brand new business.. I bought a 16 year old half ton truck and been making due. The half ton g80 BLEW UP sending shrapnel through the diff cover and had some good carnage. I put a used carrier and used gears that were laying around back in and been trucking on since with this overloaded half ton. No issues or noise. You can get away with murder most the time 😂

Mike, here in the tropics for $$ reasons it's quite common to see guys replacing broken gears with used gears... If you don't have any measurements from the original axle housing, how would you go about it? Some of us just get a ring and pinion... I know it's not the right way, but it happens... Any pointers?
@TheBFHGarage2 жыл бұрын
If you look really close at used gears you can see the wear pattern. Try to take a picture of it and get it as close to that as possible. As far as backlash, get it in the 5-8 range. That's all you can really do 👍

There're some good reasons why DANA is the #1 rear end gear guys. Street, Race or 4x4.

You make great content! Ive watched lots of your gearing videos over here in the UK. If you were swapping a carrier over but keeping the gears, would you start with the shims from the axle you were using the carrier from or the ones from the axle that you were using the gears from? Thanks Joe

There axle that you will be installing it in to 👍

Love your vids bro! Very informative. Do i need to do this same process if im only changing pinion and carrier bearings? Jeep tj LP dana 30 w crush sleeve... Thanks in advance

This video covers setting up used gears from one axle housing to another. If the gears are starting in the same housing and all you're doing is changing bearings, then it's that simple.... Change the bearings and don't need with anything else.

How would I go about just changing a carrier? I don’t plan on removing the pinion. What would I need to do?
@TheBFHGarage Жыл бұрын
If it's just carrier change, you should be able to change it out with no I'll effects AS LONG as you keep the shims as they were on each side. To be certain it is still correct after install, take a pattern and check backlash PRIOR to removing the old carrier. Check afterwards to make sure it's good.

Love your videos. What would you say the best brand gears to go with on 1 tons. 5.38 gears

I'm a big fan of Revolution Gear and Axle. They set up easy and run quiet. They are Circle K gears which are highly regarded.

Replacing worn out gears with worn gears. Yeah, that sounds like an annual rear gear replacement party to me
@TheBFHGarage2 жыл бұрын
No I get that if your gears have a lot of miles on them but the gears that I had had less than a thousand miles on them. Even then I would always recommend new gears, but that's just me.

@@TheBFHGarage I guess I should've watched the video v going off the title. And if you're changing your mall crawler into a rock crawler, you'll need new gears due to new raised gear ratio.
