There are so many people who mod the devil out of these starters and mechanisms in hopes of making it function. Most fail as quickly as they are put back together leaving damaged gears and broken hairpin retainers. Thanks for sticking to basics. Hope it helps many solve their problems.

Thanks for the explanations , very useful. It 's the first time when I see two circlips (circ springs) on the gear idler 2. Maybe someone has it made previously - good idea for extrapower, no need that small aftermarket clip, with the shape of the number 9.
@chiefpepdesign7 жыл бұрын
Marius C In some exploded views for instance on cmsnl.com you also see two of the clips... The gear also is prepared for the clip. But you need maximum torque on you starter motor to get through that resistance with the tips I give in de video. Good luck!

I know there are two clips, but one for starting motor gear (nr.1 in exploded view) and another one for mobile gear (nr.7 in exp. view). I have never seen two clips mounted on the mobile gear. Gear is prepared for one clip, on the side with cover.

Manana Fizzbitch Hi Man, yes it sounds like battery, I'm in same predicament but have done extensive research now and understand the weaknesses of the system. That's why they changed it in later models. The thing is to make each component work perfectly and you will understand it all.. There are no short cuts but start with the battery. Then lever arm grease. Then bobbin loosening a little ( behind cover plate) to see if that allows it to engage. If it does chances are it's old battery not giving the initial impetus to get engaged and lock the Bendix in.. After that check brushes in starter motor overhaul. Best Buy a kit before you start so you are not waiting for parts.. Cheers Geoff
@chiefpepdesign5 жыл бұрын
@@geoff3656 If you replace your battery, go for at least 360 cold cranking amps (cca). Look at the specs of the battery for this figure. And best is to buy a LiFe or LiPo battery. These give these amps in any circumstances. Good luck!

Chiefpep Hi CP one last thing I noted on my starter, was that there is a small removable T shaped flat shim plate that locates the starter to the engine casing body... In later Virago starter clutch generations the clips as well as the compression springs are abandoned as redundant. Even more, the compression spring was the cause of problems with starter clutch because it did not allow idler gear to fully engage. On the other hand it is redundant because the lack of rotation (when one stops starter motor) there no centrifugal force in bendix and this gear returns back on its own.

2 clips on idler gear , im not sure this is correct , 90468-29106-00 x1 , 2 clips may case to much resistance for small return spring , which i have found is not needed , left of the gear has very much better contact , but your other starter information is totally correct , i have done these mods on my own bikes over the years , although you dont need to use much grease on the planet gears , over time it mixes with carbon dust / rust etc and becomes like gritty paste and slows every thing down, even making for bad internal electrical contact (brushes ).

Well the grease won't end up at the brushes... But true that too much grease is not good. For the rest this fix always works at my bikes so I don't see a reason to change it. But one more thing I have to mention, the better the gear stops, the easier it will flip back on the worm wheel... A modification a lot of people do is tighten that clip with zip ties and stuff or by a new one to make sure it's tight around that sprocket... This is basically a mod which assures the same...

Hey. I keep reading that another good starter fix is to just completely remove the spring and it works much better. Have you heard of this and what do you think of that idea?
@chiefpepdesign6 жыл бұрын
Alex Fluckiger I've heard that indeed. But I always wonder: are the engineers of Yamaha so 'stupid' that they designed this mechanism like this? I don't think so... It's all a matter of: everything just has to work really well and instantly. You can only manage that by having everything really, really clean, well oiled, and especially well powered. You saw how my engine started like that in the first time right? This was no coïncidence. My previous bike was done exactly the same way. Trust the mechanism and convince yourself that every starter part is clean (and that also includes the complete starter motor like rotor and satalite gears) not (too) worn, strong or new (like the spring and clips) and you have at least 360cca on your battery. And then the straight thick ground wire and others as I stress in my video's. Then you will be good.
@DRnutterbutters6 жыл бұрын
Chiefpep Yeah I saw your videos. I will do all that and I was curious if they were that stupid but they did design this entire system stupidly so ya. I’ve been in the fence on whether I should leave the spring out but yours has never made that box of rocks sound since you installed it the way you did? One more question while I have you. I’m installing my ride side engine cover and was putting in the oil cover. Do you remember. Does the oil filter cover have two o rings that go on it? Also, there is a small gap when it goes against the side cover. Is this normal. I understand if you don’t get what I’m talking about. If not. I will email you pictures. I just want to be 100% sure everything goes back together right. Thanks for all your help.
@chiefpepdesign6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. No my bikes don't make these noises because of the measures I take. There are several and the combination makes the difference. Leave the spring in. It's there for a reason. Otherwise things will 'wobble' in the side. Concerning the rubbers: At these sort of questions I always walk up to my garage and have a look at the shoprepair manual of Haynes. It would be a good idea to buy one of these if you do an intensive rebuild. I sometimes doublecheck with the original exploded views like you find on CMSNL. Here is the link for your specific question: www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv750-virago-1982-c-usa_model8890/partslist/B-02.html#.W3ZpW-gzaUk So you see two rubber rings. The cap stands out because you haven't tighten it yet with the allan bolts. Also always make sure you use the right amount of Nm at these bolts. Because if you break your threat in there, you have a little problem. This specific spot it typically a spot where you (or previous owners) might use too much force with tightening the bolts and break the threat... Good luck!
@DRnutterbutters6 жыл бұрын
Chiefpep Alright thanks a lot. I’ll leave these spring. You’re a smart guy. I didn’t think of the wobble it would have without it. The Haynes manual doesn’t show anything about the oil cover. But I’ll check out the link. Thanks a lot

@chiefpepdesign7 жыл бұрын
Hi Vincent. Maargoed, it's the result that counts' en alles wat goed is is nu eenmaal duur...

As like everyone else, mine only has 1 clip on the idler gear. To convert to how you've done it, are those 3 clips you use all the same size/part number? Thanks.
@chiefpepdesign6 жыл бұрын
Hi Artifact. No, the clip on your starter engine gear is of a smaller size. You can see here what you need, and which partnumbers: www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-xv750m-virago-1983-d-usa_model8942/partslist/C-01.html#results . You see two of PRODUCT NUMBER: 9046829106 on your Idlegear.

From 1996.-on there's no compression spring in starter clutch any more. It was avoided in newer engines. Before 1996. this spring was here as presented in this video.
@loganpicks72664 жыл бұрын
The superseded part # idler gear has no spring. It’s also spiral cut at a very different angle and reworked to not breed the spring. Removing the spring on the older gears set can lessen the grind IF the gears aren’t too worn, but chiefpeps instructions are a better long turn fix.

Hi Chief, I 've been replacing almost entire starter mechanism on my xv1100 1998 (3lp) thanks to your intructions. I replaced the starter bendix,clutch and the starter motor itself, but my motor still does not spin with the spark plugs installed. I can rotate the engine manually so I can tell it is not a seized engine. Been checking wirings,conections ground points etc and tryied even an 80 Ah car baterry (connected directly to the starter motor and solenoid) but still no joy. The motor spins without both spark plugs, spins with the front spark plug on and the rear out but not spining with the rear on and the front out. I was cheked the timing and while the rear cylinder looks ok the front cylinder punch mark is like 15-20 degrees behind (counterclockwise) from the alignment mark. Do you think Is that missalignment causing the issue or I should be checking something else? Thanks for your advises!
@chiefpepdesign4 жыл бұрын
Mis allignment sounds really plausible. Please refer to the workshopmanual how to do it. Though, I also have a video about it when I install the cylinders. Be aware that there are two marks on the flywheel. Easy to make a mistake there...

Hey pep, going by the Haynes manual its showing something sits on top of that starter gear toward the case. Beside the bendix gear. Am I missing something? There is also a range fork that Is supposed to be on that gear stack (chapter 8b-20 in Haynes manual)
@chiefpepdesign5 жыл бұрын
I think we might have a different Haynes manual. But on page 8B13 you find an exploded view (in my book. Probably you find such a view near your pages aswell) on that view you find every piece which is exactly what I install accept for the extra clip I put on. What you are what goes to the engine housing is a ballbearing (sits in your engine) and a collar washer which is very important. You see it in my video aswell... Sorry but those are the pieces you need.

It's a bolt which oftel leaks. Yes you can just replace it but measure which length you need. You don't want it too short otherwise you will break the threat inside and you need the torque to keep the cap closed. Rather a bit too long with some seal rings to make sure oil doesn't come out via the hole.

When left idling is there a heat censor that turns my 1992 yamaha1100 virago off when it gets hot
@chiefpepdesign4 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. But I don't really know '92 1100's... I don't even know any bike that has a heat sensor which causes bikes to stop running when turning too hot...
@sisaketmike3 жыл бұрын
There's no heat sensor that would do that. When electronic gets hot the resistance changes and soldering points could have a connection problem/ cracks, or your TCI has an issue. But it could also be the pick-up or and a bad connection to it. It's only a two-wire connector that comes from your engine and goes to the TCI, make sure that the contacts acre clean and tight.

Looking at drawings, I suspect it to come from the clutch (Number 11 in cdn1.bikebandit-images.com/schematics/schematics/yamaha/yam002/4678_22.gif ). Or would you happen to know where it might be from? Kind regards, Wouter

Wouter, when you opened the left engine cover, you'll not drop an o-ring from the clutch. Some, or most Bendix have an O-ring at the end.

Thanks for the info Michael! In that case I have sealed the cover with the O-ring in the wrong place. The clutch is still working smoothly though and there is no oil leaking from the engine. A bit strange to know about this incorrect ring while driving but I'm not too worried about it.
