Such mature, technical music created and performed by very young men. Keyboardist Keith Emerson was 26. bass/guitar/vocalist Greg Lake was 23 and drummer Carl Palmer was just 20 years old. PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!

@@stevenmccart8502 And in Crimson Lake had only just recently learned to play the bass. In his autobiography "Lucky Man" he gives a very funny retelling of how he was asked to play the bass, figured it shouldn't be too hard, and then instantly had Michael Giles yelling at him, "What in the hell are you doing?" Apparently, Lake knew NOTHING about what he was supposed to be doing with the instrument. Lake is one of my favorite bass players!

Back in the day when I was listening to this on my awesome stereo system, my Daddy would stick his head in the door and say: "You know, I can fix that for you!" He was only half-kidding ;) He was an amazing piano player, but only for really old stuff--1920's-30's--plus songs from every musical. This is the most awesome piece of music ever, IMHO!!!!! I think you really got into it. How could anyone not??? But SOOO different from what you grew up with! But you clearly were as blown away by this as we were when it first came out. ❤

This is a three man band! What a sound, what complexity, how many transitions, time and theme changes. They did more in the first few minutes then most bands did in their entire careers. Amazing a unique album when release 50 years ago! ELP were great all such amazing musicians. Emerson on keys was the best ever the speed and complexity incredible, Palmer on drums my god what he did is amazing (listen for his drumming that sounds like tank tracks rolling) and Lake on guitar and vocals a true master. A three man band, who can do that in 2021? Great reaction, looks like you are hooked on Prog! Thanks so much for helping celebrating Tarkus's 50th. Try "the endless enigma part1-fuge-the endless enigma pt2", "Trilogy", "Livin Sin", "Karn Evil 9" and "Pictures at an Exhibition"

@@MarcusL1995 Rush? Really. No doubt they are good, but Keith Emerson is a composer. Highly complex music. No Doubt Rush could play this, and I have heard all of Rush and understand they have albums with great composing, and musicianship, but please go look at live footage of Keith in early 70s. He is surrounded by 4 sides of 3 stacks of keyboards, organs, pianos. He plays them effortlessly, switching back and forth from and side at any anytime. No one, mean no one had that talent in our lifetime. It wasn't even close. Just my opinion.

One of the minor things that I love is the two guitar solos in BATTLEFIELD, because Greg Lake recorded them, first, normally, then he had the tape flipped over so it was going backwards and he recorded the solos again. Then, by flipping the tape again, you hear it running normally along with the reversed! The first time I heard this I was hooked BEFORE the first note on the organ!!!

Some facts most do not know - it took 5 days to record the album and they could not play it all the way through when it was recorded. The genius recording engineer - Eddie Offord added his magic and sewed the parts together. The group learned to play it live before they toured and featured Tarkus.

I first heard this album about 1974 when I was thirteen. I've been a prog-rocker since. There was never quite another era in music like the prog-rock of the seventies. ELP, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator...the list goes on. Music so good that it STILL rocks people to the core. Fifty years later.

I'm with you. From '65 onward I did anything I could to get concert tickets to all those you mentioned and many more. What a rich time it was. The talent oozed from everywhere. My life revolved around the music of the day and fed me well. Most of them stand up today after all these years. And that's because of the quality and genuine creative talent - individually, and collectively. I'm afraid I find it lacking today, with a few strong exceptions.

Yes, my man, this is the progressive rock we listened to 50 years ago. Emerson, Lake and Palmer made this music with just 3 band members! ELP, Yes, early Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and others had a musical imagination that was far, far ahead of it's time. You are impressive in that you can feel the musical complexities of this music. Keith Emerson had the fastest fingers of any keyboard players, Carl Palmer was simply amazing in his drum work, percussion, and even hitting a giant gong, then don't forget Greg Lake's magical vocals along with his superb guitar skills. My first concert was ELP at Asbury Park, NJ (the Jersey Shore) the summer of 1971. It was simply unbelievable. The entire audience was roaring with pleasure!

Good to see some of you younger generations getting IT: watching you, I went through the same (e)motions 54 years ago. I can testify: this music never ever wears out, it only gets better & better, Popy!

I saw ELP perform Tarkus live on the 1971 tour. The entire auditorium became the beast, the band it's brain, the audience it's soul. I swear for a while the beast lived and moved as one. I took two girlfriends to the show... but that's another story.

Before I listened to the Beatles my dad introduced me to these guys and listening to Palmer's Drumming... Made me fall. In love with drumming after playing as percussion in my hight school band learning notes from piano and guitar... Listening to this now I can get. And hear every note and beat and love it my favorite song from them was Knife Edge

Yo Pope, brother. I grew up listening to this stuff since I was 5 years old. Im 24 now, and have a moderately successful beatmaking gig. I credit my influences to be Jean Luc Ponty, who by the way, is my FAVORITE artist of all time, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake and of course Carl Palmer. Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, even robin trower. George Duke, roy ayers, genesis. Cant forget icytwat, because the trap influence. The list goes on forever bro. Thank you so much for just being who you are and accepting this music the way it was intended to be perceived. I hate to bring race into this. But imagine being 8 years old then 12 then 17 as a half white half black dude trying to show people this stuff. They thought i was tryna be cray. For any older person reading this, if youre wondering why they would think im crazy...its because a lot and i mean almost all people my age/Popes age do NOT understand nor do they want to understand this music. Im pouring my soul into this now lol imma stop. But man your reactions are so genuine and remind me of how i felt when i first listened to these artists. Rock on bro!

As usual love your reactions, aged I don't know probably 12/13 my mate introduced me to E,L,P,my first real band I really got into properly, finally got to see them in the 90s in Bristol,God what a show,Emerson still doing real crazy stuff on keyboards,Palmer arguably along with Bonham the best of the best drummers ever,Lake just magical, foot note, the 3 of us were on very good acid at the time, before the concert we went for a beer or two in a local very big pub and oh god the show where they all wear stockings and suspenders was on,can't remember the name but Jesus Christ what a experience, anyway keep up the great work and take care.

The first time I ever got *REALLY* high, my roomate put this album on. I swear to god I was sure this album was 2 hours log because of how locked into and lost in the music I was.

This is why I watch reaction. It's like you show your buddy your record collection. (This was what it was like in the seventies.) You hear more of what you thought you knew. Like the last melody. That haunted my subconscious for decades. And all the rest I had forgotten!!
