With just 3 short rains the check dams are already showing lots of progress with building up the creek bed with newly deposited top soil. I'm headed out this afternoon to go work on some new spots, love working on my property in these cool fall temps! Hope you all have a great week, thank you for tuning in! ~ Brian & Sierra

In Australia we call these berms or debris catchers “whoa boys” specifically designed to slow the water and stop soil erosion 😊 good work!

In Australia, berms are made from dry logs of branches and sticks. They get good results.

If you plant grass seed after your last big rain in your catchments thell grow and slow the waters down even more and passive reseed the lands too

Laying out hay harvested from organic, diverse pastures/fields over the area also protects soil and provides appropriate seeds for the area.

Speaking of the trees. They use Christmas trees for the same thing, put on a beach to retain sand, and other places to retain/regain soil.

Hey Brian, I noticed that the grass is not only getting tall and filling in, it is also seeding. That is really great news as the grass will perpetuate itself and fill in the voids and create grassy landscape trapping even more water. I'm glad you found out about this type of 'greening' the desert because I didn't know and now I'm all about this type of geology(?) and 'terra farming' the natural landscape. Excellent work and very interesting content, keep up the great work! Your friend in Vegas...

One thing I recommend is taking a hoe or rake and digging out a depression just upstream of the dams. Pull all that small stuff into the dam wall, making it thicker. What this accomplishes is creating a pool that the water hits first and tumbles, losing energy before it hits your dam. Beavers do this because over millions of years of building, they found out that it works best. Plus, it's all small stuff that the dam will eventually fill with if you just leave nature to it. All you're doing is speeding up the process to maximize the results. Looks like you're making great progress and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Hi Brian and Sierra. Do you have a trail cam to put by the rock dams to see it while it's raining or look at it after the rain stops? I know if they have live feed or just recording capabilities. Sierra looks good. Praying for the medication to help her as much as possible. She is happy for sure. Take it easy Brian and Sierra. Hope you both enjoy the weekend. Hugs and kisses to Sierra.

If you can, and what would be really very beneficial for the soil, is if you could prune the existing trees, and shred the branches with a garden shredder. It would do several things. First of all, the pruning is good for the trees and the soil. It creates new roots, and old roots die off, which makes passage ways for the water, and the dying roots add carbon rich bio mass directly into the soil. Then you have all the cuttings from the trees. Plants and trees love a fungi dominated soil. The wood chips that you get from shredding the cuttings from the pruned trees is excellent mulch and a perfect habitat for those fungi and aerobic bacteria. A 4 inch thick layer of wood chips acts as a blanket for the micro organisms, it retains water, it protects the soil and micro organisms against heat and UV light, and it acts as a long term nutrient source for the micro organisms. A healthy soil is all about the micro organisms. They create the plant available nutrients. Without the micro organisms the plants have no long term access to those nutrients. So the name of the game is to create the perfect habitat for the aerobic micro organisms, and if you can do that everything above the ground will grow well too. And that is exactly what the wood chips will do for you.

Something you might try for help regreening is some clover seed in with those grassy areas. Clover has the ability to attract nitrogen fixing bacteria to it's roots. providing nutrition to the native grasses.

Good job! The one thing I would suggest is to not have the top a spikes but more of being rounded over. The addition of sagebrush was a very good call. Look into the work that Bill Zedyck did and his low tech erosion methods he did and is still being promoted. I think you would really like it. ❤❤❤

Check out Bill Zeedyk's "let the water do the work" for wet weather creeks/gullies in drylands, and Quivira Coalition's various other free resources, including Zeedyk's, for water harvesting strategies. He has a lot of ideas for water spreading and infiltrating.

a good way to slow down the water even more is to cut down some tree branches, the bushier the better, and place them in the main channels, help protect your rock walls a bitt too. go even further and stake them into the ground and create a brush dam. particularly with all that juniper around, plenty to work with.
