I have taught this kitty to sit, shake, sit up, drop, use a harness, and get in travel crate for treats and rest. We play 'Sock Hockey' with two cardboard boxes and a rolled pair of socks I use a giant dog crate with a litter box inside so she won't run out the door when I go outside. Never alone for more than 2.5 hours. When business picks up (Dog Trainer) she may be alone longer. Other ideas for not running outside? This is Coyote-ville, can't take a chance. Don't even walk her inside apartment building.

I have a big bow window looking in my backyard and two sliding glass doors as well. I constantly find thme laying in front of them in the sun. One is in my kitchen and they lay on the floor in the sun every morningThe cats love it because I have bird feeders out there. Front of house has two bow windows with beds for them to layband look outside. Upstairs office has two cat trees in front of the windows and adjacent to them. Cat scratches in multiple rooms for them. I will be adding building a highway in the office and spare bedroom for them as well. Winter project.

My cat Lucy became blind late in life. She was 21. I placed her litter box a couple of feet from the sliding door, and her food and water a couple of feet on the opposite side of the door, so she could still smell and hear what was going on outside. I also created a kind of cat flume out of rolled up blankets so she could navigate to the bedroom at night, and a sort of staircase made of plastic bins and cushions so she could climb in and out of the bed. I miss her.

Our recent catification project -- My partner and I put a water fountain near a big window and we landscaped our backyard with bird and pollinator friendly plants. The result has been wonderful for both us and the cats! Tons of bird and bee and butterfly traffic!!! The cats love to sit on "their" chair and watch the birds. It's wonderful for them. And we are enchanted by the birds too. If it's your wheelhouse to bring birds and butterflies near your windows, I can't recommend it enough!

My cat lived outdoors for years before he moved in with me -- and now he wants nothing to do with outside! He won't go out the door and seems terrified of windows. Also, he's not a "climber." Still, he loves the sunny spots, plays with toys and watches Cat TV on video. He just loves being a homebody. Gotta respect your cat's individual preferences. Love your videos, Jackson!

I put my antique wash stand and two chairs on either side. I covered the wash stand with an old blanket and a cat bed, then covered the chairs with baby bottom sheets. Then to keep the cats interested I put two bird feeders and a water fountain outside the windows!! It was a great success!! The cats loved it and the puppy became a cat bc she loved the race to the windows to see who got the best spot!!! Stapled it along the fence line and stacked paver stones on top of it at the bottom of the fence. We built a staircase and window porch for the cats to go from the house to the yard floor. Then we bought a cat door and put it in a piece of plywood as a window insert - used weather stripping to seal it. We planted rye and wheat in the yard and it because a jungle - they love it. We're currently busy re-catifying our house. We took care of a very old & sedate kitty for years who came to us as a stray; he left us for cat afterlife early this year. Along came a new little stray kitty & she's not even a year old, so she's full of energy & wanting the full floor to ceiling range of our house & we're doing our best to accommodate her as much as we can. Fortunately, we all have plenty of time to interact with her, & we already had the huge litterbox parked under the biggest window in the house.

She likes to go outside occasionally but it's a pain to go downstairs. She has access to two roof balconies, too. What more could an independent feline soul yearn for? Brushing.....massages....cat videos.....lasers.....sinks with a gentle running stream.....fresh food prepared daily. Geez, is there such a think as too much when it comes to the ruler of my kingdom? 😊

I have 3 hummingbird feeders right outside my bedroom sliding glass door, which has a screen door so I can leave the glass door open when the weather is nice. I live at 4000 ft above sea level on the North facing side of a mountain in SoCal, so it's usually nice here. My son's cat hates my cat, who is a playful doofus who tries too hard to play with his cat, but she ain't having any of his nonsense. She's a serious mature cat, and he's going to be a goofball clown his whole life (I hope). For now, I have to keep them seperated to avoid fur flying. He watches the hummingbirds through the screen door, while she watches them from her window, which is at a right angle from his vantage point. I see them looking at each other often while they share the experience of watching those little buzzy birds zooming around. I'm hoping that in time they will bond over their shared enjoyment of watching birds.

Thanks for this one! I'm always trying to push for more cat-friendly infrastructure in the communal parts of my house, but it can be a tough sell. You say 'cat furniture' and people immediately think 'expensive hideous carpeted monstrosity that'll take up a ton of space'. But those wonderful setups with all the shelves are a big project to try to push for, too. So I really appreciate this focus on small, easy tweaks that anyone can make right now!

I found this really cool, ornate brass shelf thing at a thrift store. I noticed that the letters NSW are incorporated in the ornate design so I searched online to discover that this shelf is an old luggage rack from a defunct railroad, but most likely it's a more modern reproduction. "NSW" stands for "New South Wales", a state in Australia. It's a sturdy shelf, especially mounted with Molly bolts. I made a tufted red velvet cushion for it so now it's a cat magnet! I swear, our little black glam-kitty loves it because she knows she looks like a royal princess lounging on her red velvet.

Good on you!! We lived in an RV for several years with our cat, who did just fine. My husband made and placed a catio out a side window - just a wire box/cage that he bolted in to the side (so somebody couldn’t remove the cage and climb in). Added a piece of thicker plastic to serve as a floor. Then, he cut a flexible rubber mat to size and attached it on the outside of the window to serve as a cat-flap over the opened window for kitty to climb thru to access the catio. Huge hit and cost was maybe $30.

I lived full time in my RV and travelled with two cats, didn't have to modify anything. The whole interior seemed to be a cat gym: jump from the overhead bed to the dinette, to the bed in the rear. One of my cats is an Egyptian Mau. With those long rear legs, he could jump the length of the camper (24') in two leaps. I think that camper was made to be a cat gym. lol!

I truly loved your show "My cat from hell". I learned to read my cats and understand them. We became much closer. I used scrap wood, 1x8s and 1x 10s, and a 1x6 ramp. The middle shelf covered a window about 4' off that floor allowing enough of a gap so that it could still be opened. The ramp from the bottom shelf to the top was wrapped in sisal as well as another vertical scratcher from floor to bottom shelf. Well, it is so well loved I need to replace the sisal! My cost was just the brackets and sisal!

As reference I have two male cats that are about a month and a half apart in age. They were introduced as kittens. They’re both 2 year olds. My cats always went to the main window (2nd floor condo i wish i could utilize a bird feeder but HOA has me ) but I had one main cat tree that only one cat used and they would rumble for the spot. I had another tree against the wall that was never used, and a hammock by the other window that is always used. My cats always were separated in that way for a window view. But I had the idea to push the two trees together by the main window and both cats are there all of the time. They’re there together right now at 930 at night. They’re utilizing the little den now that one of the holes is closed off, they still play rumble on it but not like before trying to get the top bunk to lay. Now they chase each other back and forth. I’m glad I didn’t just remove the smaller tree from my house just because they never used it. I’m considering doing shelving on the blank wall but haven’t pulled the trigger. Thanks Jackson for your videos, they’re always so nice to watch, wholesome and informative.

Love it! One thing I've never heard you mention that my cats love is opening or at least cracking the window, Since cats process the world so much through smell, they absolutely love to sniff the outdoor air, at least as much as they love looking outside. In good weather, we open the windows (with screens of course) and even when it's too cold or too hot, I'll crack it for them once in a while.

I've had to bolt chicken wire over my screens because of one of my cats. He would do his "KoolAid Man" impression otherwise! He's a big kitty who loves to sneak outside and kill lizards and snakes, and he easily busts right through window screen. It was his love of reptiles that caused his former owners to rehome him. They were in the living room one evening, watching a movie when his happy butt came trotting through his cat door, dragging a big snake. A big snake that was still alive... a big snake that was a venomous rattler!🐍 I'd already fallen in love with this cat so I immediately offered to take him to my house. I don't let him outside unless I'm supervising. I don't want ANY snakes in my house, but I love how he keeps our house free of rodents.

Thanks for including some mobility/capability aids. When we moved six months ago, we placed the cat stuff with their 12 years of wisdom in mind. This time I placed their 4-foot tall cat tower (always been at a window in my bedroom) next to a nightstand. The floors here are all hardwood, so now the cats can descend to the nightstand before jumping down to the floor. (Sometimes they do.) There is a low bench next to the low picture window, and it's a favorite spot for watching the outdoor channel. The cats still jump up and down more than 4-foot intervals by choice daily, but we made sure there are comfy spots that don't require it.

This episode spoke to me, Jackson! I bought my first house 2 years ago and moved in with my 2 cats thinking about all the ways I would catify the house and the catio I would build etc etc... but here I am 2 years in and still paralyzed with the reality and finances of homeownership and all my ideas for a catio and cat highways have kind of fallen to the wayside because of all the other repairs and maintenance and random disasters that come first. not that it's impossible or that I can't afford it... but the decisions and where to start and committing of a budget to the catification has become a bit paralyzing. I need to refocus and just start! I have the windows and a few cat trees, I just need to start developing and connecting the superhighway a bit more with some shelving!

Frugal cat lady here. We couldn't afford to buy a cat window seat so we took the small cat condo that kitty never used, and put it in the bathroom window on top of a couple of boxes. We did this to make it flush with the window ledge. The bathroom window gets morning light and we noticed one day that kitty was sitting on toilet seat lid when sun was shining on it. Anyway, cat is a senior and has trouble jumping so we put cat stairs going up to the condo at window to make it easy for her and now she waits for us to open blinds in the A.M. so she can watch all the goings on in the parking lot below. Oh and we have to open the window as well or she's not happy.( don't worry, there is a screen).

I built a cat tree out of 4 inch PVC pipe, and computer cases (I'm a computer technician, so I wind up with lots of steel and aluminum cases to start from). 4 years in, I need to reinforce it a bit, but my cat loves it, it's 6 feet tall, and he sleeps there all night, looking over me. It's at the foot of my bed, so he's literally 6 feet up, and knows where I am at all times.

I adjusted (stopped speaking so loudly on the phone or going into a different room so I don't disturb her if I was getting louder, stopped running around when I was late for work, stopped wearing perfume at home). She jumped in my lap and demanded pats for the first time ever this morning and I almost died. Thank you so much!

Our little miss looooooves the windows. During winter she sits on a little pad/pillow, but during summer she won’t. We have about a gazillion sparrows living in our neighbourhood and she gets so excited watching them. We recently moved and now have a lot of large windows and really noticed a change in her behaviour as she’s so entertained with them. We made all of them escape-proof and she loves sitting in the sunny breeze of the open windows. In spring we’ll start working to make our garden more cat, bird and insect friendly so she has even more to see, but will also be able to explore the outdoors a bit more (harnessed). We already have a lot of incidental short kitty highways, but I’m definitely going to look into connecting those together

I'd like a multiple cat territory episode to go further into this. Each cat seems to find a special "escape" spot from the other cat. My Tonkinese who jumps might claim the top of the lazyboy. He loves the access to "Cat TV" /window and the rocking motion. My Aegean loves the warmth of the closet in tight spaces and the top of the stairs in the corner to sentry the other cat/zoom buddy or humans and catch them for water/food request. He also has a pick of windows. What helps for me is recognizing what each one likes in a personal pad and help them own it. Even though they have their own spots, they have gotten along really well by having access to each other (zooming the stairs together) but also their space. I think some of your episodes touch on this but a dedicated extension of this one would be really cool.

We catified our newly decorated living room. We did it relatively cheaply. Most expensive item was the big cat tree (in the window), we have 2 window hammocks, which our 3 adore and we’ve bought floating shelves and wrapped them in sisal rope. I MADE cat ladders (was actually really easy). We really thought about our 3 kitties when we planned out our newly designed living room. We all live harmoniously in a 1 bedroom apartment…so it is very doable…and on a budget. Next year we hope to add a catio ( was supposed to happen this year but I ruptured my Achilles tendon and I’ve been off my feet for a few months!)

I DIY'd a kittysill last year! I took a shelf panel out of a cupboard we weren't using, screwed it to the windowsill, screwed an anchor above the window, and hung some paracord to support the hanging edge. They loved it just like that, but when it started getting colder I wanted to warm it up so I folded up on old blanket and secured it to the kittysill with a couple binder clips. They live there! There's always a cat there. I also made my husband replace the downstairs front window's minimum sized sill with something a little wider when he decided to re-frame it. They're not falling off nearby stuff trying to watch what's going on the in neighborhood anymore because they can actually sit there. Plus the half-underground basement has that foundation wall ledge all around which means there's a built-in 20-foot long very wide cat ledge with 2 windows ground level with the garden, and a similar ledge in the laundry room that looks out into the neighbour's backyard. We've also got this split staircase thing going on in our house that left otherwise unusable space beside the stairs upstairs but there had to be attic access there, so whoever built it decided to make it a linen cupboard. I took the doors off. The cats are free to hang out on all the shelves in between and on top of our storage boxes, and one of them really loves that space. If you can't find her anywhere else, she's in the linen cupboard, likely 2nd shelf from the top, on top of a box.
