Instax Mini 8 Review + Double Exposure Trick

Hello everyone! Thanks so much for joining in. Today, I'll be quickly reviewing my Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 and showing you a really cool double exposure trick.
Double Exposure:
1) Open up the back latch.
2) Take the photo and quickly and gently lean back the cartridge.
3) Wait for the noises to subside.
4) Close back the latch.
5) Take your second photo.
I've noticed that the counter doesn't sync up with the film when you do this, but your photos will come out fine afterwards. Once you reload a new cartidge, the counter resets back to normal.
It takes a bit of practice to get it right, so don't get too upset if you end up with a few overexposed photos :)

So basically you can try this trick when you're down to your last film that way it'll work and even if it doesn't you only lose one film (which is still a lot,in my opinion)

When doing the double exposure trick, try to place a finger or 2 behind the film cartridge, so you don't end up dropping it out of the camera and burning your films, like I did. But if that happens, don't worry- insert it back in AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE and the first picture after that will be completely white. but after that, just set the settings to 1 grade darker (if you're outside on a sunny day, set it to lightly sunny. if it's cloudy, set it to home, and if it indicated the home lighting just stay on home) and it should work fine. it'll be a little whitewashed, but it's still ok.

a lot of people seem to be worried so i'm just gonna say my experience with this: 1. it doesn't fuck up the camera, after i found this trick months ago my polaroid still works perfectly doing double exposures and regular shots 2. if all your film after dropping it from your camera goes white idk what's wrong with ur film, i dropped my pack of film out the camera when i first tried it and only the first film that came out became white, the rest was perfectly fine as long as it was not exposed to enough light 3. this is all you need to do to so that nothing fucks up, when taking the first shot with the latch open keep a finger lightly on the film pack so that it doesn't completely fall out when you lean it back for those of you freaking out about it fucking up your camera.. point blank period, it doesn't. those sounds that you claim "worry you", happen whenever u take any pic on the polaroid period, so it suddenly scares you when you hear it with the film pack leaning out? it doesn't make a difference. like i said it's been months since i started doing this and my polaroid camera (instax mini 8) is 100% fine :)

this is actually amazing thank you so much for this! the only method I heard of was going into a dark room and taping the cartridge slot shut then going into a dark room and peeling it off to take the double exposure. this is so easy! and saves me money because the newest instax camera with a double exposure setting is so expensive

+Kriti Maitre I haven't had trouble with it :) It is only if the cartridge itself opens up, but if you're careful enough, it shouldn't ruin it!

This is by far the easiest way I've seen for double exposure! Thank you! But I've heard that once you put a pack of film in, you can't open the back or else it will expose the film to light and not let them develop properly (and they'll just be white/blank) so for this double exposure trick won't it ruin the film?

Hi Cheri! Thanks for your comment! YES!!! It can ruin the next film if it isn't done properly. So like I said in the video, try to tip it back ever so slightly so no light penetrates. It might take a few sacrificed films to get used to it, but good luck!!!

This can never be good for your camera. I don't understand why you're recommending this to your viewers. When this could potentially wreck the mechanics of the device for good. If double exposure really is something you wanna get into. It would be way better to just invest in one that has a special setting for this feature.

Overexposed is when the film gets exposed to light which ruines them and makes them come out over exposed (white).

The picture isn't exactly printed. It's much cooler than that. The lower portion of each sheet of film where you can write is filled with chemicals that are squeezed out onto the film as it's ejected through the rollers which develops the image captured on the film. There are other cameras that do print the image but this is much cooler even if it does cost a dollar a picture.

That's because you're not meant to open the camera after you've inserted the film, until after its all finished. if you open in while there is still film inside you're exposing the photos to light and your white pictures is the result of this.

But I heard that opening the camera's film storage will ruin the film inside - at least in case that the protection foil has already been removed. So it would only make sense to try the double exposure trick if you only have one shot left... was this the case for you?

Love it, this is a great way wreck the camera’s internal components and ruin the film inside! Side note - keep showing your younger and inexperienced viewers what not to do so they can learn. The tears and frustrations will wear off ;)

Hmmm... that is quite strange. I haven't had this happen to me. Was there a chance that the cartridge might have been damaged? Are all your photos coming out this way?

Hi this video was amazing but I have a diff doubt..when I try clicking a pic with my mini8 on a really sunny day ..it shows my that I should change my settings to the really sunny one and I do that but I somehow end up getting pictures that are completely white washed..this happened quite a few times..any idea why??

Mehika Shetty Hi Mehika. If you are outside in broad sunlight, it will usually suggest one of the "sun" symbols. This doesn't mean it is going to make your photo brighter. It is just adjusting for the light from the sun. As for the overexposed photos - Is it doing this when you're taking normal photos or when you try to do double exposure?
