I am amazed by such a wide collection of antique sewing machines wow!

Fascinating. I never knew there were so many manufacturers, many of which I've never heard of. What amazes me is that for the machines to have ended up in New Zealand, the distance and mode of transport to get them there, surely many were shipped in. You've certainly acquired a treasure trove and have some work ahead of you to restore them all. Sending best wishes to NZ from Chester, UK.

I believe the famous Singer factory at Kilbowie near Glasgow made over 40 million machines. I think half of them came to NZ!

I used to have an old singer. I used it so much and I treasured it. I wound up giving it away bc I moved so much. It’s nice to see those old machines. Now I have my heart set on restoring a 1910 treadle machine, and right now I am working on a 306. It’s hard to believe it’s 70 years old and most if the work on it is cosmetic. Runs great!

My local auction house has recently had an estate to clear from a sewing machine collector. Sadly they have been releasing 3 or 4 machines a week for months. It would have been lovely to see them all in a sale like this. I do love the very pretty designs on the antique machines. I think the orange one was my favourite.

I have an old treadle sewing machine “The Bartlett.” It came from my husband’s old farmhouse. I can not find any information on it. I sewed on my husband’s Mother’s Singer treadle. One more storage to clean out. Hope it is there!
@kfl61110 ай бұрын
From my book 'The Encyclopedia of Early American Sewing Machines, 2nd addition' there are two companies that made a sewing machine model called 'Bartlett': A) Davis B) White Google them and select 'images' to see if you can match your up with the examples on the web. Davis made 3,000 - 5,000 in the 1860's. From 1875 to 1900's they made hundreds of thousands, so my book says. White sewing machine company started to make sewing machines in 1875 and are still in business. Hope this helps !

We are watching this and laughing, it wasn't so long ago you and I were discussing the problem collector's have in A finding room and B what to do with the collection when downsizing to a smaller home and C making the hard choices of what stays and what goes. We are thinking you will probably need to stay where you are and build a very large shed out the back. Harry is quite relieved I never knew about this Auction. Some very lucky machines there going to an appreciative home.

Thanks Cheryl. Do you want some machines to clutter your new place up? :)

Pretty cool, nice haul, it was nice to see some machines I never heard of, it's pretty rare to come across a sewing machine auction here, interesting to see a Domestic from Cleveland which is just a few miles away from me, that makes wonder the history of those machines, were they imported or carried over by their owners, each one has a story to tell.
@InStitches2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure whether there was an agent for Domestic machines based in New Zealand or whether people brought them back with them. I'll do some research. Thanks.

Your Number 22 at 5:58 looks like a Singer Model 12 with the non-violine bed and without a Singer logo, but the silver plate above the logo looks odd. Maybe it is one of these reproductions. Apart from that it looks identical from the form of the machine, the bobbin winder and all the rest from an 1863 - 1871 Singer Model 12. Depending on the slide plates and other things it would be a machine latest built in 1871. #105 at 9:31 also looks like a Model 12, but with hand winding.

I love your videos! That was such a treat. I'm so hooked on sewing machines, it is a fault. Absolutely love them. Miniature works of art like vintage cars. This was wonderful to see. I am in the US so never get to see some of these brands. 7:00 - The Fridor Dutch green machine had such a superb Art Deco look to it. 8:41 - Elgin! Same name as the watch makers but different company. You got yourself a good haul. That Singer 306 was made between 1954 - 1962. I was guessing the date range and off by 1 yr. What do you use to clean the insides? I'd love to know. So far, my own blend of penetrating oil is 50:50 Acetone and ATF Automatic Transmission Fluid. After soaking, scrubbing, and cleaning the inside, I lube with Triflow Silicone Lube. I wonder if you take these machines apart, ultrasonic bath or boiling the individual parts and redo from scratch? One person was powder coating them and making jewel colored machines for sale. Fabulous.

Hello and thank you for taking us out on such an interesting “field trip”! I also loved that NewNational 1890 machine and all the really old vibrating shuttle models, they have such old world charm. I also liked the Pfaff 103 treadle and the little Pfaff Tipmatic child’s machine, but the piece de resistance was of course the gorgeous cherry pink Robertson machine ! However getting the Singer Sphynx was just as good anyway! Perhaps we’ll get to see some of these new additions featured in your videos one day? Greetings to you from Melbourne…Ann

I found a portable Moline model A...with all acutriments, & books...does anyone know it's approximate worth, or where I could find that info ?? Also looking for a good home, or museum in New England for it, as it will be expensive to ship. I have 3 other machines, 2 portables, I use, & a console I keep for sentimental reasons...so I'm just scaling down. The Moline looks in usable condition, well loved, & used...I know the folks who gave it up, they were moving.

I have an older sewing machine, which I'm guessing to have been made in 1950's, although don't know for sure. All it has on it is "Fabric Sewing Machine" on head and then a plaque near base that states it was made in Japan. Unable to find out anything on the machine. It's motorized and straight stitch only. Do you know anything about this machine? Would appreciate any information you can give if any.
