Fun story about hand drums...my first year teaching elementary I had the opportunity to buy a bunch of new hand drums. We were using them for the very first time with a 1st grade class and they were all on the floor in a circle. One kid had just come back from the bathroom and was so excited to play that they ran across the room, stepped right on one of the brand new drums and his foot went RIGHT through it. He was devastated, and I learned a valuable lesson that day! From then on, I've always said that their drums should look like a cereal bowl, not a cake!

Oh no! We always say upside down like a bowl but I like the cake analogy too!

Great info! I especially love the partnering up idea for some of the instruments. I would suggest not starting or ending instructions with what not to do. I have discovered that certain children will always do "what not to do" example if I give one. I only get two work with my groups once a week and I've learned to only give positive examples. I totally agree with the consequences for misuse 😁 Thanks for the great advice.

I’ve hear that from others but for some reason it’s different at mine. If I don’t say what not to do they will immediately do it. And it I show them what not to do, they won’t. Just do it before they get instruments in their hands!
