I didn't think there was a fixed setting for any maneuver due to weather conditions (density altitude, wind etc) I was always taught, "Whatever it takes" for 90 knots and 500 ft descent. Looking forward to getting my instrument though using your new platform!

A known pitch and power is a great start to flying a stable instrument approach! I agree that small pitch/power changes are necessary depending on the day. Another trick that I use to obtain the proper rate of descent for a 3 degree glide slope is Groundspeed * 5.

While I don't recall learning to do this (predetermine specific power settings, pitches, resulting airspeeds/descents/ascents) during my training some time ago, a few years back during an instrument proficiency flight I had an instructor introduce me to a "GATE chart"--pitch, power, and resulting airspeed/descent or ascent. I thought it was a good idea, so when I bought my C182, I went up, tried out various configurations, and recorded some of these predetermined settings for future use.

It may be confusing to oversimplify and state that “a glide slope is configured for a 500 foot per minute rate of descent.” Required FPM descent is a function of groundspeed. If you target 90kts in a no-wind scenario, 500fpm is going to be pretty good, but introduce any winds aloft and you may be behind the plane if you don’t recalculate your required rate of descent

Hey Jason, would the glide slope be a function of feet per nautical mile (FPNM) I remember this function on the E6B would we be able to use it to determine the approximate descent for various air speeds? Thanks, sorry for my confusion
@MzeroAFlightTraining3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason! Yes, a standard 3 degree glideslope equals 300 feet per nautical mile. However you would want to convert that to feet per minute (fpm) based on your groundspeed. And yes, you can do this on the E6B. If you have anymore questions, feel free to email our CFI support team at support@m0a.com Thanks for watching!

Can you file IFR to an airport with an instrument approach procedure? I get mixed answers on this.

Power settings are critical on an approach. Set it and forget it.. focus on the other stuff.
