I think I would have liked construction work like this when I was younger. Super clever. What's the insulation R factor of a concrete building like this? That music is stuck in my head
@ICFbuildings3 жыл бұрын
Our most popular 3" Ultra panels create R-28 walls - that's continuous R-28 unlike so-called "R-19" batts that only get you roughly R-13 in between wood studs.

+1 Super ICF primer video ... Someday maybe, an ICF structure with hydronic heating will surely brush off frigid Colorado mountain winters .... Someday maybe . . . . .

It's already being done! Usually it's in-floor radiant heating within the concrete-slabs.

@@ICFbuildings .. So true. .. In-floor hydronic's was a major cost component in our 2001 Vail, Colorado home renovation. .. Couldn't be happier. .. The system is a PEX ALU PEX Kitec set in a mortar with a 2" - 3" thick Colorado bluff stone floor throughout with a Buderous boiler; Think flywheel of heat. .. There's vertical zone's on shower walls and a bathtub surround zone. .. The kitchen granite counters are a zone for a shot of warmth as not to draw heat away from a warm food plate. .. Couldn't be happier. .. Coming in from the cold after skiing on the mountain, there's nothing like the warmth of the interior which engulfs ya. .. The original cheap ass electric baseboard heating is long a system of the past. .. The Buderous sips NG .. I'm preaching to the choir,,, ICFbuildings. Now, if I could check an ICF designed/constructed home from a To-Do-List I'd be happy. .. Someday maybe ...

I have always like the idea, and would be interested in building my next house with them. Living in the Northeast we have basements and obviously require back filling. Are there any extra requirements beyond sealing / protection to the ICF?
@ICFbuildings3 жыл бұрын
Like other basement walls you have to let the concrete cure sufficiently and usually install the floors before back filling. Water-proofing is usually done with self-adhesive membranes applied directly to the Quad-Lock exterior and a dimple-board for drainage where needed.

How are the outside walls finished ? Are they left as is, with just the foam from the form, or can it be finished off with lightweight shot-crete ?
@ICFbuildings4 жыл бұрын
Most exterior finishes work! Stucco can be adhered directly to the foam (after rasping it) per the stucco manufacturer's recommendations, usually requiring a mesh. Wood, plastic or metal cladding is mechanically fastened to plastic ties or, if needed, to "airgap / rainscreen" thin wood strips. Stone and brick finishes are attached with brick ties that are cast into the concrete.

why do you need to fill with concrete? Can you fill with i.e. closed cell spray foam insulation? assume the ceiling will be the same light weight material. Is there chemical compatibility or will the EPS be degraded? what are the load and span limits if possible?
@ICFbuildings5 жыл бұрын
The reinforced concrete is the structural component of the building - so usually required, although we had customers filling our forms with spray foam and applying reinforced shot-crete to the two sides as the structural components. For the floor/roof-system, the forms are still lightweight but they are reinforced with continuous steel ribs/joists. See details for spans etc. at www.quaddeck.com EPS is insoluble in water and in general will not degrade over time but it dissolves in hydrocarbons (e.g. fuels, oils, tar), organic solvents (e.g. acetone/ketones, benzene, paint thinner), ethers, esters, aldehydes and amines.

from a normal conventional wood house how much it will cost more with concrete walls floor and roof ?
@ICFbuildings3 жыл бұрын
Usually a few percent more than conventional wood but total cost of ownership is lower from day 1, see www.quadlock.com/insulated-concrete-forms/ICFs/insulated_concrete_forms_incentives.htm

is it cheaper than concret blocks?
@ICFbuildings4 жыл бұрын
For a comparison, you'd need to add the cost of equivalent insulation and furring-material to the concrete-block cost - in which case it is cheaper.

When the wall is finished with drywall, how do you hang something heavy on it (like a TV). Will a stud detector sense the plastic ties? Or will I need to use long concrete screws for this?
@ICFbuildings3 жыл бұрын
There are a number of options to hang heavier items: most stud finders detect the plastic ties, for heavier items like kitchen cabinets plywood screwed to the ties is commonly used, for even heavier things you want to attach to the concrete where you can use tapcons or during construction you can embed steel hangers/anchors/bolts into the concrete for everything ranging from decks, garage doors to entire floors.

If the wall is insulated from in and outside what's happening with the concrete moisture inside wall?
@ICFbuildings5 жыл бұрын
The concrete will cure slower inside ICF walls and the excess moisture will migrate through the EPS insulation over time. The moist-cured concrete becomes significantly stronger than concrete exposed to air after a few days. Good indoor ventilation or de-humidifiers may be needed during the first months after construction.
@Bart-dg6qv5 жыл бұрын
ICFbuildings Moisture will migrate through styrofoam? How? Do you have holes in it from inside? If the moisture can go one direction it will go the other way sooner or later. Unless it goes through the upper part opening which woukd probably take some time.
@ICFbuildings5 жыл бұрын
Most excess moisture escapes to the tops of the walls and through the seams between the insulation boards. EPS used in ICFs is also different from XPS="styrofoam". EPS lets more moisture through and can dry out much better, see www.quadlock.com/technical_library/EPS-versus-XPS-Insulation.htm

But don’t the ties create a line for the ingress of water over time?
@ICFbuildings3 жыл бұрын
The Quad-Lock ties are unique by incorporating a water-stop feature around every tie. It's the round disks near the centers of ties illustrated at www.quadlock.com/images/engineering/QL_Ties.png We built a tall water-tank that verified that the water-stops work as intended even with a 10ft high water-column. Of course concrete is still somewhat porous so other customary waterproofing techniques are recommended in addition. For example on basements walls with potential for hydrostatic pressure, a self-adhesive SBS membrane plus a dimpled drainage board is installed to drain water to the drainage tile.
