I did this to my ice machine, except 1” thick foam board. Dramatically reduced power consumption…..45%. After that success, I did the same thing to my garage refrigerator. I did not do the front….but everything else including the backside. 33% reduction. If you put a moving blanket on top of your refrigerator and come back in 30 minutes to stick your hand under the blanket, you will be stunned how cold the top of the refrigerator is….and that is even more stunning when you consider cold does not rise.

The reduction in watts for the refrigerator are in the video. It went from 78 watts to 62 watts. This is a 20% reduction which is pretty good.

recently, I've been thinking about wrapping up my fridge with foil covered expanded polyethylene insulation. but first I decided to find out how that would improve the energy efficiency. this is the first worthwhile video among many useless others suggesting don't open the fridge often and keep the coil clean

Well, I learned the hard way with my new 18 cubic F................... I did the same like you, added insulation all around it. But than I found out that the Condenser Coils are all around the freezer walls (Not on the bottom or on the side).........So, I had to take it off, so the freezer walls can "breathe".

Sorry to hear it. I got lucky and had a refrigerator with coil on the bottom.

My chest freezer sinks heat through the sides so I wouldn't do that myself. I was interested in doing the lid though. Thanks for the content 👍
