my gut feel is that this is not the bike you should try to do 10 / 10ths on - eg like you wouldn't care if you were on an RC45 - forgivable handling etc. The engine on this thing overpowers what the bike is safe to do..... I didn't like it....

Bandit 1250S is the most beasty of any bike. It has like 100 ft lbs of torque at 4500 rpms. Or something crazy like that. It's one of the most beasty of any inline 4 cylinders ever made in a production bike, in terms of low end torque. It's the new liquid cooled Bandit, with about 109 horsepower. I'm guessing, the Bandit is WAY more fun to drive than the Fazer, because people complain about the Fazer being low on torque. The problem is, the front end on the Bandit doesn't look nearly as good as the Yamaha. I wish Yamaha would have put a 1250cc engine on the FZ1, and made it have 100 ft lbs of torque.

I love these FZ1 bikes. My 05 FZ1, blacked out motor, nice, is comfy,powerful AND cheap to insure. When asked the engine size I told them is wasn't a litre bike, only 997 or 988 CC's lol. My insurance was cheap! I rode from Hood River Oregon to Stage Coach Nevada in a day, 600 miles. While hella tired I made it fine. I had the carbs rejetted, a K&N air filter, Yoshimura exhaust and regeared it. Fast and fun!

Not uncommon actually, and not just the FZ but all the Japanese bikes now have great longevity with the engines. I read about a Suzuki V-strom with nearly 200k on it. Quite impressive really. My old Harley sportster made it to 70k before it was smoking and needed a top-end rebuild. I guess that's decent for an old air-cooled engine though.

I rode a second gen FZ1 for years. I bought it with 3.5K and sold it with over 55K on the meter. The engine is a R1 engine so technically it's a liter bike but the actual CC on the engine is 998. So when you inform your insurance what the size is they dont ding you for having a 1000 CC engine. I hooked mine up with all kinds of upgrades and it was super cheap to maintain and such a smooth comfortable ride. I ride a BMW now but I do miss that bike.

Insurance company here. Many things are calculated into an insurance premium and rates. First and foremost, you're driving habits (tickets, accidents, etc.). That part of the rate is pretty standard no matter what you ride/drive because we're insuring you against hurting someone else. Next part is the actual vehicle/motorcycle you're driving. Propensity to be stolen, crash parts, cost, demographic of a partuclar bike's rider style, etc. all figure into the rate. Typically, you don't see squids with mohawk helmets on Fz1's. They are on the Gixxers, CBRs, Zx's Busa's, etc. Also, rarity does come into play. Just like it's baby brother the Fz6, the Fz1 rider typically isn't a new rider, has years of experience, and is a more mature rider than the supersport counterparts. Finally, just the overall propensity of a bike to be damaged in a crash. Fairings are god awful expensive and anything with a fairing is going to be more expensive to insure than it's naked counterpart. Heck, one of my previous bikes a Burgman 650 cost more to insure than my Fz6 did even though the Fz was a rocket compared to it. Reason being is all that plastic would be ruined in a tipover accident whereas on a Fz6, you might get a few scratches on the pegs and maybe a blinker assembly. Bottom line, we know how fast a bike is. What we care about however, is how that speed is being used and who's straddling it.

@Ryan M both wrong, this model has 143 bhp at the crank, while the second generation has 148 bhp. The second generation revs higher & is a little lighter, but the first generation reaches maximum torque in lower rpm's.

I owned a silver 03. I traded it in on a Road Star before I killed myself! Mine ran 165. When you snapped the throttle open in first the front came up shifting to 2nd at 70 3rd at 90 4th at 110 then the front would touch and stay after you passed 120 and that's with my 275 on it! That's never touching the rev limiter!

I got an 02 fz1 like this and they are def sleepers. It's got the 1999 r1 engine in it with some slight differences like gearing and bore. Got mine with 32k miles for 1800 and Its got 35k on it now 4 months later, and I couldn't be happier with it. If you've got the opportunity to get one of these go for it, they are $120 a year on insurance :p I'm 20yo too so this bike is jesus for me.

Full exhaust and SISF tune on a Concours 14 is the ultimate sleeper. FZ1 was probably the best all around bike of the early aughts, they kinda ruined it with the reduced range and racier ergos of the second gen.
@FoxFaderWorld
@FoxFaderWorld 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The biggest insurance sleeper is the Gen 1 and 2 Aprilia Tuono. They practically started the factory streetfighter. An RSV with with a handlebar, minimal plastics, V-twin power and low maintenance costs. From 2002 through 2010 these bikes can be had for less than $4k. Waaay more overall performance and less weight than the FZ1 your speaking of. Spend a bit more and get a Tuono "Factory" and you got something. Plus, the Rotax twin will go well over 100k miles. As far as insurance premiums go, it's more about documented accidents than power to weight ratios and top speed.

Can anyone answer the question about the engine "torque" of the FZ1? A lot of people regard the FZ1 as being "gutless" and "boring." And I can't understand why. Yamaha must have taken it to heart too, because they built 3 cylinder engines now with twice the low end torque, so obviously they didn't like the customer complaints.
@parasina
@parasina 4 жыл бұрын
1st gen Fz1 (like the one in this video) has more torque in low to mid rpm than the second gen version, introduced in 2006. That's because the engine from 1st gen R1 has smaller bore & longer stroke compared to next gen engine. That made the 1st gen Fazer engine more gutsy but it wouldn't spin as much as the second gen Fazer. Inexpensive Ivan's carb mod improves low to midrange power even further. I hope that helps.
