The whole “Four is a coward for escaping from his abusive home life” subplot deeply pisses me off! It takes immense strength and courage to leave an abusive parent especially when one has grown up in said environment. Holy shit, wtf Roth?!
@Topdoggie7
@Topdoggie7 2 жыл бұрын
I can confirm this, I was stuck in an abusive household for 27 years and I was so brainwashed I didn't think I could leave and when I finally did leave everything in me wanted to go back. I was so scared of the unknown I would have taken the abuse. Luckily I didn't get to go back. And now I realize my entire 27 years of life was a big lie. And that's absolutely terrifying to realize just how much abuse I normalize to myself. So to hear somebody say that their cowards for leaving their abusive household drives me up a wall.

This is what always confused me tho abt Triss and Caleb bc they both did the aptitude test/choosing ceremony at the same time, which means they both must have been sixteen, which means they either had to be twins or have been born within a year of each other. Both options are unique enough that it seems only natural that it would be mentioned, but as far as I remember (and I literally am still reading the series rn), it's never specified how far apart they are in age. It almost feels like Roth wanted Caleb to be her older brother but forgot they had to have both been sixteen to have taken the aptitude test at the same time, and somehow no one caught that discrepancy when they were editing it.

I think Veronica Roth came up with the idea that her characters are “””genetically impure uwu””” as an explanation of why they’re all so two-dimensional, to cover the fact that she can’t write decent characterization for shit. @@BlisaBLisa it's been about 8 years so I barely remember now 😆 but the factions are somewhat based on a certain theory (or theories?) about personality, we talked about mirror neurons which were mentioned in this video. And we discussed altruism a lot in that class so they definitely brought that up in relation to Abnegation. I'm sure there was more, but my memory has more holes than swiss cheese.
@irenedoesntexist
@irenedoesntexist Жыл бұрын
@@BlisaBLisa I'm in psychology too! My guess is @LeslieNope's profs were talking about the Big Five. These "Big Five" personality traits are Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Openness to experience. There is also a "Big Six" theory called HEXACO that includes an additional trait called Humility/Honesty, but I think most personality theorists tend to prefer Big Five, as it's one trait simpler than HEXACO while still accounting for the complexity of personality. Of course, Roth butchered it, seeing as the premise of the book is that each person is sorted according to one personality trait that completely defines them and that those who are "divergent" who have more than one trait are abnormal, while in the actual theory it is understood that each person has a mix of all five of these traits (some theories have tried to narrow it down to a "Big Two" or a "Big One" even, but they are generally considered much too simple to truly capture the complexity of human personality). *For the introverts out there, yes, you are accounted for; you would be described as "low on extraversion", because introversion/extroversion is a spectrum from low to high, as are all traits. Also, the factions don't neatly line up with the traits either. Erudite could be either high consciousness (which is often essential in applying oneself to a life of study) or high openness to experience (Openness to experience is essentially curiousity, open-mindedness, and interest in learning and trying new things and is thought of as being linked with intelligence). Both Amity and Abnegation could be high Agreeableness (basically caring about others). Abnegation could fall into that sixth HEXACO trait, Humility/Honesty, but so could Candour (abnegation=humility, candour=honesty). I suppose one could argue that Candour also overlaps with high Openness, as that faction is concerned with telling the truth and knowing the truth, so perhaps they too are intellectually curious. And Dauntless could be high Extraversion (as extraverts are more likely to take risks than introverts), high Openness (because they're adrenaline junkies seeking new experiences; people high on openness are more likely to use recreational drugs, which seems like a rather dauntless thing to do), low Conscientiousness (Dauntless do a lot of dumb shit; a conscientious person would never!), low Neuroticism (neuroticism is essentially anxiety and anxiety often prevents us from taking stupid risks; someone who is high on neuroticism would probably have too much sense to be in Dauntless), and low Openness (Dauntless doesn't seem to ask many questions, showing a lack of curiousity). Yes, that's right: I put Dauntless as both High Openness and Low Openness. This is because a) personality is complex and b) Roth fucking butchered it. Anyway, it's been a year since I took my Personality Theory class, I haven't read Divergent, and I'm taking a very surface-level approach to both the theory and the book, so don't quote me. This is just a very quick analysis to answer your question and get your brain juices flowing. Human personality is so complex-- each dimension of personality can overlap with and interact with another, a person can score high on some aspects of a trait but low on other aspects of that same trait, opposite personality traits can produce the same behaviour but for different reasons, and how a personality expresses itself can shift from situation to situation-- that I cannot address it all in a simple KZbin comment. God, just watch as I do my thesis on fucking Divergent... I'm going to be a laughingstock.

Re: 1:22:48, admittedly countering Roth's silly over-simplified pop-neuroscience with my own here, but I'd wager that someone with a larger-than-average lateral prefrontal cortex would be more likely to take one look at the Impulsive Morons With Death Wishes Brigade and not want anything to do with them. I reckon the main reason someone with above-average impulse control, inhibition, and focused motivation would join Dauntless would be because they either enjoyed violence (oh goody) or saw instrumental violence as a means to their desired ends (oh goody, goody). Neither reflects well on Tris. (The extra mirror neurons, though, I'd tend to consider a good thing, so I guess it all balances out?)

i always think about this, it’s funny because i feel like we never see protagonists that ever make good decisions, which i guess story’s gotta story but idk it’s like in horror movies where they’re make the dumbest decisions and you lose empathy, and then the one where the protagonists are smart and quick thinking the fear really hits. i would’ve agreed with and understood tris a lot more if she chose amity or candor, one of the “boring “ ones where you can actually be happy instead of whatever the hell dauntless does, but i guess it’s a lot easier to sell cool edgy teenagers and paintball fights than genuine happiness but i almost want to believe that the whole “single character trait “ thing is making fun of hp houses or whatever other personality indicator that ya loves so much but i think that’s too much credit

To be fair, shooting a gun is much easier than shooting a bow. Not least because to shoot a bow, you have to support its draw weight (for perspective: a medieval longbow's was 80-150 lbs) on your fingers, while aiming. Not only that, but there are more factors that affect accuracy. Is the arrow nocked correctly? Are its flights unruffled? Are you pulling the string back to the same point every time? Are your stance and posture consistent? Etc. I've done it. It's difficult, tiring, and sometimes painful. With a gun? Point and shoot. Much easier.

i agree, and i know we’re weren’t asking but in case you ever need to shoot a bow again, they’re not usually that heavy unless you’re like trying to actually kill something far away and then you’d probably use a compound or something that’d make it easier, and the stance can be hard but generally you want to straighten your front arm and pull the string back to the corner of your mouth

I feel like there needs to be a different name for this type of YA dystopia because its not quite a dystopia. I guess technically a dystopia just has to be the opposite of a utopia but I feel like when you think of a dystopia story you think of something that uses a dystopia to make some kind of commentary on people and society, the hunger games falls under this but divergent and the other hunger games cash grab books dont. divergent doesnt really have a point to make about people and society its just a fantasy/science fiction adventure story

I’m fully convinced Veronica had no fucking clue what to do with the series plot. She had one of those “omg wouldn’t that be a cool concept for a book” ideas that we ALL get and jumped into it without any structure. I don’t think she had any clue where the story was going after book one and I don’t think she spent any time world building and probably thought “I’ll take care of that later when it’s more relevant to the story” and that’s why it gets progressively more boring, convoluted, and nonsensical as the trilogy goes on. That’s why the second book is a snooze fest and the third book is borderline unreadable

Yeah, they keep getting worse with every book. I like the first one (despite… everything), the second one is kinda boring, and makes the characters angry all the time, and the third is just… awful. It belongs in a completely different series
@tired1923
@tired1923 2 жыл бұрын
this series is awful, I remember I couldn’t get into it at the time it was popular and I thought it was maybe because the translation I had was not very good, but not it’s actually just bland and boring. I genuinely hate that Roth tried to make Trice interesting by making her “””not the prettiest””” when it amounts to her being small, frail, fragile, skinny, almost prepubescent looking. it will never affect her negatively, she fits every beauty standard, all the guys all want her, and she’s never not tall or strong enough to do anything. meanwhile, every character we’re not supposed to like is fat, disfigured, scarred, has a lisp, blindness, or some other bs that puts them into the “ugly/fat/disabled people are bad” trope.
@hollygarfield123
@hollygarfield123 Жыл бұрын
yesss like if there were times where tris’s characterization as small and weak was genuinely an obstacle for her like if she couldn’t do a pull up after a week of dauntless training or couldn’t aim the gun because it was to heavy for her and struggled with feeling helpless/small then like fair, that’s some people’s experiences and there were times when i was rooting for her like when it said that she spoke up and her voice seemed shrill compared to the men in the meeting i related because that is just an experience of having a high voice but so much of her characterization as ‘small but tough’ just translates to “everyone underestimates her and says she’s so little and dainty but she never actually struggles with anything and is very strong and bad ass’ and it’s so played out i just desperately want anything about these characters to feel earned because it really does feel like they just decided that she’ll be like really nice unless she’s mean sometimes and then she’s mean more times in the later books
