Wow, nothing says, "I don't know what I'm talking about," like saying something that even a layperson knows is incorrect. Copper does not degrade when recycled. Raw copper ore has to be more refined to remove impurities than recycled copper. Copper tubing/pipe has a lifespan of multiple decades. Our house is over 70 years old and the wood framing and copper pipe are the only things that could last another 30 years.

@edbouhl31002 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your water source. The mentioned Orange County, CA homes with copper lines probably would have lasted generations back East. But they got Colorado River water, which has a blend of minerals and high salinity that reacted with the copper leading to pinhole links. But I agree, re-refined copper should be fine unless it has other components that cause hardening, etc.

What copper failures exactly??? I'm a 30 year remodeler and all of this talk about bad copper is new to me. I have seen new copper from a 15 year old remodel fail at the 90's while the 40 year old copper its attached to is just fine. Pin hole leaks they were. I attributed that to abrasive water hitting 90's and slowly grinding away the inner wall of the pipe. I've also repaired many pinhole leaks in 25 year old remodels, when I inspected the inside of the pipe I noticed heavy flux corrosion. It made me wonder if the plumber didn't flush the pipes for a long long time and allowed the flux to eat away at the copper. Or perhaps the flux itself was somehow faulty. Again, I'd like to know, from anyone, what exactly is failing in these new homes built with copper?

1:58 Not sure the radius of the pex stubout/bend support would work in a 2x4 wall? Many old houses here are 2x4 exterior walls and I'd be worried the pipe would be pushed all the way back to the wall sheathing making it vulnerable to freezing or puncture by siding nails etc.
@Lilliputian633 жыл бұрын
I have exactly the same situation you describe, but am not going for the setup this guy is recommending. The way you can get around what you describe is to use a 90 degree pex elbow, and that way keep the radius tight. Better slightly low pressure than either frozen pex or puncture. I've put 3" of rigid foam insulation behind my exterior wall PEX. That should keep it freeze-free. And if it does freeze...it's PEX and won't burst.

Yeah I want to do same thing, but Pex 1/2 bend radius needs to be at least 3.75 inches and since most 2x4 for last few decades is like 3.5 that is an issue. One thing I am debating since we remodeled y years ago is to mount that bend through the vanity back wall, that will give me an extra .5 inches of the drywall. Would be a issue if vanity ever needed to be replaced, but it would give me the needed clearance

So I emailed Uponor and their bend supports for 1/2 go to 3.4 inches for radius and they say that is in spec, even though I agree 3.75 should be the number. I have some support to try as I repipe. If not then I purchased plenty of elbows to use, but trying to keep the connections down. Inreallly wanted to go Zurn Pex-B expansion, but did not want to fight with coils and no one around here carried the sticks. Plan B was Rehau Pex-a, but some of their fittings are back ordered for a month or more and I want to stick to manufacturers fittings to avoid any potential warranty issues. Uponor I was able to get all the fittings and valves, etc. nervous about Uponor, but looks like all their issues were with the red/blue pipe especially on hot water recirc. All mine are white in factory UV sealed bags, so hoping that avoids any issues.

I don't know about it failing in 8 years, but I think it's a good idea (ugly appearance aside) to use the quick connect at the end of the connection as long as you have an individual shut off somewhere. This way, your system is all PEX up to the stubout. Any failure that is not installation related probabaly means you need a repipe anyhow. I can't comment on the quality of copper these days but they ain't making them better and I think people don't realize that dealing with recycled metal is not just melting it down and expect a perfect product when it cools.
@plumbbuild6517 Жыл бұрын
The think about copper is it’s been recycled since way before the world war. I’ve been using copper stub outs end of 1990s and I still use them alone with Pex stub outs and even a few cpvc stub outs but so far in over 20 years of copper stub outs no fail so far not to mention I was sweating copper pipe since the late 80s
@shaunbava1801 Жыл бұрын
@@plumbbuild6517 This guy is full of it. Yes the copper today is lower quality and does not last as long but in most places with good water quality copper will last decades before degrading significantly. I don't think you'll see copper failing in less than 20-25 years in MOST places and much longer if you used type L, I'd imagine the stub outs which are considerably thicker than type M copper likely would last as long as the PEX pipe itself. Most of these things are warrantied for 25 years. I definitely prefer a copper stub out but think a drop ear with brass is the best. If your water system has bad water use plastic pipe and fittings exclusively. Copper is still the most widely used piping material. All products have failures but the main products in use today, copper, PEX and cpvc all seem to have a pretty good track record.

What is the brand of quick release angle stops you use and where can I find them? Thanks!
@IntegrityRepipeInc7 жыл бұрын
Dahl and Brass Craft at Ferguson Plumbing Supply. Brass Craft is starting to have issues so we are mainly using Dahl.

What specific model of Dahl for the quick release? Do you have a link and model number please?

I think he's using a Dahl 1/2″ Quick-Grip x 3/8″ OD Comp, Angle Stop. Here is a link: pexhouse.com/product/dahl-1-2-quick-grip-x-3-8-od-comp-straight-stop/

@@crazycool7309 that Dahl quick grip angle stop valve is rather expensive, if you try to buy them in USA. almost twice as expensive as Sharkbite push connect angle stops you can buy at the Home Depot and Lowes for around $10.

What kind of angle stop is that? I noticed that there is an expansion angle stop available. Which is better?

We prefer to use the Dahl expansion angle stops now.

Wow, glad I watched this video. I would have thought the copper stub-out to be "hands down" the best way to go. Thanks for the great info!

It's funny how an experienced man with a reputation is called "full of s***", but commenters and young guys on YT will 100k + subscribers are Gods.. I am convinced the internet is full of idiots, but this guy is not one of them. Thank you integrity repipe for all you do!

Who cares about young celebrity seeking YT'ers? I'm an experienced tradesman, and if someone makes a claim as Mr. Ludlow is making, I want to see proof, other than his word. I've tried Googling to find others who are saying something similar to Mr. Ludlow, but can find absolutely 0 corroboration. I've also asked him this question directly, and haven't received an answer yet. He may yet respond, and I don't mean to rush, but I want to hear because I'm working on a plumbing project right now and have to decide on my stubout before closing up the wall. I wish he had taken the time to show evidence.

I understand what he is saying about the copper. In Charleston South Carolina no problem. My grandmothers house was built in 1953. Only had one issue with the copper pipes. It’s a under slab manifold system. The issue was concrete was touching the pipe. Lime in the concrete eat through the copper pipe about 40 years ago. Everywhere else no problem. Though drive 20 miles West on interstate 26 to Summerville. No do not install copper if your house has copper you need to take it out. Something in the water eats the pipe from the inside. And my last issue with this video anybody using push on fittings is an idiot.
