The value proposition segment comparing the CPUs and the disconnect people have applying the same logic to SSDs is spot on. I suffer from it myself. At the time of my purchase the 2 TB 660p was $190 and the 1 TB Samsung was $249. It was not easy for me to pass on the Samsung drive, but after watching the previous TechDeals SSD videos and doing my own digging I decided to go with the larger capacity. The 2 TB 660p is the only drive in my computer and it is working great. Since I spent a bunch of money on the CPU / MB for this computer I guess I will probably always 'feel like' I scrimped out on the SSD even though I know I didn't leave a whole lot on the table by going with the 660p. Contrast that with choosing a very cheap case which I feel great about ...go figure.

Nice video. I just built my first computer in 12 years (had built 50+ before that). My laptop that lasted 7 years finally started having issues. I decided to build a new desktop. I got a 660p as my storage drive (and a Sabrent Rocket + for my system drive). Both were 'lower cost' options with very good specs. My laptops random SSD (whatever it was I don't even know, was going strong after 7 years; it isn't what failed). So, I think basically any drive will last long enough for the normal user. As far as speed. I mean, it wasn't all that long ago we were using HDD's. Anything that is even SSD (500mb's) is fast to me! I can admit, my new system loads to desktop in 7 seconds, which beats my old 2.5" laptop SSD that got more around 30 seconds.

Mr. Deals, you always ask whether someone's buying a computer for this year or for the next five, so I wonder what your opinion of the P1 is. Let me explain: the 660p and the Crucial P1 have nearly the same hardware, but the P1's firmware is better tuned. Its write cache works much more smoothly (see Allyn Malventano's review at PC Per, pcper.com/2018/12/crucial-p1-500gb-and-1tb-m-2-nvme-ssd-review-more-qlc/). In my experience, the 660p visibly doesn't handle SSD-to-SSD copies as well as the P1. I'd expect an NVMe drive bought today to live long enough to see NVMe SSDs used commonly as game drives. When that day comes (say, in five years) and SSD-to-SSD copies are more common, I'd also expect the P1's more consistent write cache to matter a lot more. Excellent video, by the way. Always appreciate your insight.

I just bought my first SSD. A 512gb Intel 660p NVMe SSD. You explained everything so neat so clear even in newbie like me can understand. I'm going to install it. Now I will be looking for your videos how to install it and the partition shenanigans where a common people like me are getting lost.

Nicely timed video. I only needed a NVME drive to complete my build and was considering the 2TB 660p based on your last SSD video. This convinced me to buy it, although I probably was anyway. The benefit of the larger capacity outweighs the faster speed for me.

It's been a while since I've delved into computer hardware developments. I'm very glad to see your channel is not only still doing well, but quality has even further increased beyond how good it already was last year. As always, your videos are wonderfully informative, and please keep up the good work!

I can't really afford binding to a monthly sub atm, but I'll be sure to use your Amazon affil. links - thanks for providing them for .de ;)

I have a 950P sitting in my laptop. (bought refurbished, works great still, was the best price for the money given the tech at the time) I was gonna flip that into my new desktop, but looking at it, it seemed nuts to go through all that work when a 660p was less than $100. That was thanks to your last SSD video.

Perhaps if they sent a few fewer samples, the price would be even lower (see stacks of samples on table).... All jokes aside, these videos are so damn helpful for those trying to get the most bang for the buck. Thank you!

That was an excellent video. You really drove the point home by comparing these with CPUs. If you ever do a follow up video then I'd love to watch it with more I/O bound games like Star Citizen. Sony and Microsoft have both hinted at their next-gen systems sporting quite high I/O performance with no loading times (according to them) while GTA5 only reads around 1.5GB at boot and still takes 30+ seconds to load. We're so used to performance only being CPU or GPU bound that we ignore that next-gen games might actually be I/O bound this time.

WD's blue SN550 1TB is literally $100 (130 CAD) in store at the moment, and it's considerably a better drive than the 660p (TLC vs QLC).

I have a Patriot Torqx 2 64GB 2.5" SATA 2 SSD that I have had for what seems like forever. I first used it as the OS drive on my Phenom 9550 and moved it from system to system for OS until I got a Crucial BX100 500GB. The 64 GB is in my 7 Days to Die server as all I needed room for is Steam and the dedicated server. It's still working fine. On this system, I went with the 970 Pro 512GB NVMe, dear God that cost too much and I think you are spot on that I did not need it. I also have a hard drive for Steam, a 5TB WD Black, got it 4/3/2017 and it's fine. I have 254 games installed, I tend to not uninstall anything LOL. I HAVE been looking at that 660p 2TB to put in my other M.2 though, what you say here is pretty much what I was thinking might be the case. My second M.2 is PCIe 2, so I figured it's not like it can take advantage of any of the expensive drives anyway. Oh yes, I also have an old hard drive in there, I backup my game saves to both hard drives for the best chance to keep them, and yes from time to time also to off PC backups. One day, my system will have no hard drives, but for now I am pretty happy.

Thank you for your videos, I just happened to stumble across your channel. I bought 4 of the 660p 1tb drives and the Hyper M.2 X16 card for my Unraid system. I am using the drives stock (not Raid 0) for unraid cache and it flies. It is in a Raid 10 setup inside Unraid (2TB total space) along with 33TB of spinners. The VMs, dockers, and backups are super quick with these drives and I got them at Newegg for $81 x 2 & $84 x2, which is a steal. Now I just need to fill the last 3 M.2 slots on the motherboard and I will really be set. lol

Considering I recently switched an Acer Aspire Switch 10 E into linux, the speed of the storage is really not everything ( Win10 boot = 370s - debian Buster boot = 26s). It all depends on the use and I can also say that with cost in mind, 660p is a great deal. I also do love the comparison to real life use. It makes comparisons like this worth listening through.

Tech, your the Paul Harrell of the computer youtube world (that's a big compliment on your real world data gathering if you don't know who Paul Harrell is). Keep up the good work. I just couldn't justify getting extra SSD for my editing machine when I can get a 4TB 7200rpm 6GB cache traditional HDD for the same $$ as a 1TB 660p. When the price gets down to where it's more $ to TB as HDD, it will be more tempting. I would really like to know why you choose SSD over HDD for editing, and maybe how that breaks down $ per hour of suite work. Thanks, and keep it up!

I'm really glad I found this video. I'm in the market for upgrading one of my PCs and saw this intel 660p drive as an option. I thought that the performance would be under par compared to a samsung evo NVMe that was 1/4 of the storage space but faster for a similar price... and I almost bought the Samsung. After watching this video, you've changed my mind and will now be buying that intel 660p.

Tech, it's always a pleasure to watch one of your videos. The fact that you actually use the stuff you review means a lot to me as a consumer. Benchmarks have their place but when you have used something day after you find the real value of performance as it relates to what you do with your computer. You put your computers through actual stress tests in your everyday use. I pretty much look at your recommendations as facts period. I really appreciate all of the hard work you put into your reviews and the the explanations of how and why. Your commitment to detail make you the # 1 internet resource for all things computer related in my book . I'll be using an Intel 660P M.2 as my boot drive in my next build for sure. Thank you for the review. 🙏
