It's the best that we can currently do. Going further would require either a hardware approach or a crack in Intel's cryptography (I think it's more likely that they could start decapping Intel CPUs to physically cut out the ME core and its auxiliary mechanisms from the rest of the system, or overwrite Intel's ME root certificate on the processor die with extremely precise factory tools). In newer CPUs, you cannot fully disable the ME firmware because if the ME doesn't report back to the CPU, the computer will auto-shutdown in 30 minutes. It can't be reimplemented either, because the modules and several other parts of the firmware blob are signed.

@@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 So should I be looking at an ARM based PC instead....?
@3lH4ck3rC0mf0r74 жыл бұрын
@@mekuranda All main CPU architectures contain these execution environments in some capacity. AMD has PSP, Intel has ME, and ARM has TrustZone. Not to mention, as far as I'm aware, only Apple is designing ARM-based PCs, and Apple is out of the question. me_cleaner (made with the research of, and used by the folk at Purism and System76) actually does a pretty good job though. During the first few stages of boot (when the computer has yet to show anything on the screen), and after the chipset has validated the ME properly, the ME microkernel crashes right after, and this halts the ME completely. So during most of the PC's runtime, the ME is indeed verified to be completely inactive (and the little code that does get to run looks safe as far as anyone can tell..?) As for all the "own network stack" stuff of the ME, it only really applies to the onboard Ethernet port in the motherboard. If you use an USB Wi-Fi adapter, for example, the ME is still theoretically able to access it, but simply can't contain the drivers to manage every single one of those out there (as long as the OS isn't lending the ME its stack so it can access the Internet like any normal program instead)
