Intel just did a yet ANOTHER major update for their Arc graphics cards. HUGE uplifts in all DirectX 11 games. BUT, they also introduced a new way of looking at GPU data with in Intel PresentMon- that is "GPU Busy". This shows the amount of time it takes the graphics card to render a frame, then if you combine it with a frametime graph (CPU render time) you can see whether or not your GPU is moving faster than your CPU. Or in some cases, if your GPU is just waiting on other system factors. Basically how to find the performance bottleneck in your PC/system.
This is REVOLUTIONARY! We can easily confirm CPU limitations in games and for the average gamer, also just see ig you're leaving performance on the table. Intel just changed GPU reviews and testing forever! And solved the issue of not knowing what the problem is.

Vex, reason it was choppy is you need to go in to the settings of PresentMon and set the dispay to 60fps or so, defult is 10 for display and results in choppy graphs.

Problem is games do not use 12 cores and 24 threads. They use way less cores and threads. Some indy games use like 1 core. Its the single core performance that counts. Games dont care for high core count cpus, they just want a few really fast cores.

@RAM_845 Yeah, I have a 5900x, myself. Sure, it's great at never worrying about maxing it out (unless you encode or compress with the right settings) BUT... I'm thinking of swapping in a 5800x3D down the road when I upgrade my 6700XT. 5800x3D is a boss at gaming, but then again, it can't do work like the 5900x. Almost like ya need 2 PC's lol. Because I'm not buying a new board, DDR5 and a Zen4 when the 5800x3D is such a boss. So, at least that option is in my back pocket. I understand why they came back and released the 5600x3D. They had plenty of bad 5800x3D's to turn into 5600x3D's. But omg.... wouldn't a 5900x3D be a dream chip lol? But ONLY if they made both CCD's 3D stacked. Not this new stuff they did where CCD0 is 3D cache and CCD1 isn't. And since the 5900x has 2x CCD's, it'd probably turn out like that. Then, again, if they had limitless time and money, they could just combine 2x 5600x3D's and have a 5900x3D. Okay... okay.. done dreaming.

@@JustAGuy85 Well yes that is why there are gaming pcs and workstations. Workstations have many, kinda slow, cores and tons of ram... Something thats pretty much useless for gaming. PresentMON is awesome tech by Intel, glad it's open source! MSI Afterburner might be the standard for tech enthusiasts and reviewers but I have a feeling PresentMON will find a userbase. Especially among maybe less informed PC gamers and normies. Being able to diagnose bottlenecks and make better balanced price / performance builds can only be a good thing, especially in a recession. It's also going to be interesting moving forward with technical analysis of PC ports, we've now got this piece of software we can point to and say "yep, crap CPU utilisation" or "yep, crap optimisation, driver overhead". Awesome video Vex, keep 'em coming :)

i love PresentMon, couldnt be happiper with it. though i just learned that my cpu is basically overspec for my application e.g. using only 40-50% of its CPU power yet presentMon says it could pump out more FPS on the CPU side aka frametime... so how does that work lmao is my CPU lazy? PS: presentMon got 'fixed' after a restart and is now showing proper stats.

Vex, as I understood Frametime is the whole time of the system to generate a frame and put it on the screen. It's the same as in Afterburner and in any other software. Not CPU only as you mention. And GPU busy is a time of GPU only to generate a frame. So Presentmon shows only when GPU is not fully loaded. You can say that it's a CPU bottleneck but it's not factually correct. It could be a GPU driver issue, bad game optimization, or anything not only a CPU.

It's actually really weird that a 5900x is bottle necking a game at 1440p. The argument is usually that at higher res the CPU won't matter that much because it will sit there waiting for the GPU to render the high res frames, or something like that.

I think prelude to Battlemage and pairing with the right CPU. It also shows if the memory bus is not coping. Some of these cards come with 128 and 192 vs 256 bus and you can show with this how 4k for example where the performance really is because FPS alone won't give the true performance. And as you can pick up the INTEL video also talks about completely new drivers for the ARC. To me this might be optimized drivers for INTEL CPU. As it is now the drivers are a compromise to work on AMD also. I don't where but I have a picture of 20% of performance is still on the table for INTEL CPU optimized drivers. Also DX9 is claimed to all working. DX11 has a big boost. 70 XeSS supported games now and number getting bigger fast. 30 driver updates and the card has been out about 1 year. A770 $350 the value is getting better and better and it does 4k in most of the games well enough for an entry level card for 4k. Overclocking from 2100MHz (2400MHz) 225W to 2786MHz 271W. There are not many cards that have 16gb VRAM and 256 bus or better to enable 4k. Then there is XeSS 1.2 just launched. It was already good and getting better. And what has AMD/Nvidia done in the same time? AMD discontinued the top cards. Nvidia 50 series maybe 2025. INTEL Battlemage maybe 2023 Q4 to 2024 Q1-2 with 14th gen CPU. Performance on paper on bar with 4080 or even 4090 and price maybe around $500-600. Of course speculation but I'm just parroting what is the general feeling.

@@NubAnSkrub Q3 2023 has been the original road map for Battlemage. I haven't see INTEL giving any other dates. I'm fully aware what youtube speculate. No one has real information. A770 was discontinued to make room for Battlemage manufacturing. At least this is the rumor. Alchemist+ will be made by Acer maybe. AMD announcing they quit making top end cards. That to me tells INTEL is close. Also INTEL can't wait. Market is open. All new drivers are coming, tools are already here. INTEL XeSS 1.2 just got launched. So much is happening and INTEL has really been pushing. The Intel 14th gen release date is Thursday, October 19, 2023. Vital for Battlemage. So expect the GPU launch to be near that date because if you are you build a new computer for 14th gen CPU you want to have the suitable GPU also available. It would be silly not to.

Morale of the story: To you guys who bought Intel GPU, Please please enable the Telemetry. The reason is very simple. Intel can't possibly test millions of hardware combination possibilities. So the fastest way for them to deliver Driver Updates, by using Telemetry. Because Intel Telemetry is actually monitoring the Driver behaviour. Not your activity. That way, they can gather hundreds of thousands data everyday to analyze for future Driver updates. Radeon & NVidia Telemetry is totally different story. You might want to disable that. Because they had decades of experience in writing GPU driver. You want Intel to succeed in Affordable high performance GPUs? Enable the Telemetry.

Its giving you indepth information to see how much a CPU limited performance of the GPU. And by quantitive numbers relative to frame times. Can see it being a really useful tool for reviewers like GN, HU and DF. But also helps people visually see what they need to improve to reduce bottleneck in their systems. Granted what you can do now if obvious this gives you a more precise way to measure that. In a real world scenario.. lets say you have a new game and your PC hits a shade under 60fps in a game and you can see you are little CPU bottlenecked you can make a decision from other peoples benchmarks and reviews if going up to more performant CPU of lets say 15%+ IPC and improved clocks will give you (say from Zen 3 to 4) and you can make a educated guess on how much FPS you could potentially gain. Just by calculating frame times between fps, and how many frames in the gap between GPU busy and calculate from there.

You will never "solve PC performance bottlenecks". All systems have a limiting subsystem or component, AKA bottleneck. Improve that component or subsystem and the bottleneck will move somewhere else. For example in ecology you will often see population growth bounce between growth being limited by carrying capacity and it being limited by predation, often forming two equilibrium states at two distinct population levels, and each being limited by a different factor, or bottleneck. Also, there is far more than just "CPU" or "GPU" to limit and bottleneck performance. For example around the crystal it most likely was limited by the CPU itself, probably from the increased number of particles and other elements to calculate. But there is also the memory, the PCIe lanes, etc. For example I can show a distinct and measurable difference in FPS in Cyberpunk depending on whether it is on my NVMe drive or my SATA drive. In Kingdom Come : Deliverance, I can go from almost no noticeable pop-in of textures on my NVMe raid drive to a couple seconds or so on my NVMe drive that runs through my north bridge to "oh my god, everyone is naked and has no head for several seconds" on a SATA drive. What were the limiting factors? The bus systems themselves.

They already have tools better than this (like Nsight) that tells devs exactly what part of the pipeline is stalling. The gap between 'Frametime' and 'GPU Busy' is simply an abstraction of how long the CPU spent waiting for all tasks to complete before proceeding with the next frame, it doesn't really directly tell you that it's the CPU speed that's bottlenecking.

Are you saying the 5900x can't power a 3080? It seems to me that you have the misconfiguration or something wrong in the pc as memory.
@starlightHT
@starlightHT Жыл бұрын
Answering my own answer. I confirmed with PresentMon my 5900X (now I have 4.65Ghz on the first ccd and 4.5Ghz on the second ccd 1.3V) is more than enough to maximize the 7900XTX even with OC at 1440P Ultra if not using FSR upscaler. In that area I get an average of 130fps walking around the perimeter. For me the problem is really the Nvidia drivers or something related. It's impossible to max out a 7900XTX and not a 3080.
@mojojojo6292
@mojojojo6292 Жыл бұрын
A 5900x is definitely massively bottlenecking a 7900xtx. There's a lot of games out there that are very cpu demanding especially more modern titles. It's a better match with the likes of a 3080 or 4070 but even there it will bottleneck some games. Especially the 1% lows. You would probably see as much as 30% average higher frames with a 7800x3d with an even higher number on the 1% lows. Why would you pair a 1k gpu with a 300 cpu?
@starlightHT
@starlightHT Жыл бұрын
@@mojojojo6292 It explains there, where is the bottlenecking in having 220/250 FPS a whole game in Bf2042 with a resolution of 1440p normal quality and without use of upscaler or 140/180 fps in cyberpunk in ultra in the same resolution, Assassins Creed Valhalla I have 170+fps the whole game without dropping fps with a maximum quality of 1440p. if you prefer synthetics have more than 31 thousand in 3dmark times without oc. Do you know what kills your gaming experience with AMD products? Too much voltage on cpu or gpu. It's my fault they don't know how to tune a Ram or fine tune a cpu or tune the motherboard bios. When I had the 3080 on the rig it was the same thing. It had the same fps as those using the new 7000 or 13000 cpu. By the way I don't know how my 3080 behaves in Remnant2. I don't feel like switching.

Intels highest preforming Arc card is a 406 mm² die, it came out in oct 2022. The 7900XTX has a GCD of 309 mm², it came out on dec 12th 2022. The 6650XT has a 237 mm² die, is on the 7nm process and came out before the Arc 770 and preforms the same as it (slightly above). The Arc cards were DoA my guy. They (hopefully) are building their drivers for BM so they don't have the same issue that the Arc ones did (meaning huge dies and super low performance + high power draw for the performance) GN just came out with a video that goes over this overlay and they have used it for a while now. Nothing particularly new but good video to get the word out I guess.

I don't know that Intel's 3rd attempt (the first being the infamous i740 "Starfighter" at the end of the 90s) at a "3d" video card line is DOA. It's in the range of Entry Level gaming cards and the fastest of their current cards should probably be a $149 8gb/$199 16gb part, but the tech is there even if its a powerhog. Intel has said that Battlemage would double performance, which would give them a competitor for a current 399-599usd card. That's not going to show up until about this time next year, so a lot could happen between now and then. NVidia and AMD are trying very hard to make a "midrange" card cost more than 750bucks. Everyone is competing within the limited production of TSMC because they aren't fabbing their own chips. Which IMO is really why we are seeing the price increase. I would say that Intel has its own adherents that will pay for the name and that if you offer them an all Intel system that is decent, they will buy it. Most of these people are buying low end Nvidia cards currently.
