How much does your hand weigh? Lightening the mouse just doesn't cut it anymore. The mouse may weigh 16 grams, but your hand weighs way more. To really optimize our aiming, we have to think better, more radical designs will elevate our skill. Cut off your hands, replace them with carbon fiber and alluminum alloy proshetics. Give yourself an unbeatable hardware advantage.

Fun fact: the two printers highlighted at 5:11 (HP Multi Jet Fusion and Stratasys H350) are actually using inkjet printing, not lasers! The inkjet printers print an infrared absorbing ink onto the layer of Nylon powder that causes that region to heat above the melting point of the Nylon while the rest stays as a powder. This means that the entire layer is printed in one go rather than "drawing" a pattern with a single laser point, making it potentially much faster. Beyond this, the principle is the same as SLS

I bought "replacement" ceramic mouse feet some years ago from a French company on Amazon (who doesn't seem to be around anymore), and I pop them off and apply to every new mouse I buy. They're about the size of a small button, and you remove the original feet and double-sided tape them in place. They do add a little weight, but it is low, centred and well worth the upgrade. The friction is so very low, you should consider trying such a thing on your lightweight mouse to make it feel even less connected to the surface (friction, being likely the largest drag component now, rather than inertia).

Next step would be to move the circuit board off the mouse to an external box, with just the sensor and two switches in the mouse itself. That’s gotta be good for a couple of grams at least.
@SianaGearz3 ай бұрын
No, it wouldn't be. Let's say your mouse is based on STM32L052T6 processor, you can choose the second smallest package not the smallest, 4x4x0.5mm, that's a weight of 0.01g. You only need 4 wires, power, ground, and USB D+ an D-. Now imagine you had the processor offboard, then you need to run to the mouse power, ground, sensor clk, sensor mosi, sensor miso, and 2 wires for the buttons. The copper weight in the cable adds up quickly! The one change that would sort of make sense is to remove the 3v3 regulator (sot-23 + 2 MLCCs) from the mouse and move it into the plug housing at the other end of the cable, but even that won't save you more than 0.03g including footprint induced weight. Bulkier processors which need more external components can come out cheaper, so you don't see this one often. I would remove the USB-C connector due to steel weight and replace it with Picoblade or JST GH, mould a strain relief onto the cable.

I love your design, but I think you could get it even more rigid and possibly lighter by using the PCB as a structural member. It’s pretty easy and cheap to make it into an x shape with a frame around it. Also FR4 (PCB substrate material) is incredibly strong(Young‘s modulus of 24 in bending, compared to 1.7 GPa in SLS Nylon). If I where you I would try to use the PCB to give structure and only add the finger rests and button covers as 1 layer thic molded carbon fiber sheets glued directly to the PCB. You could also directly apply the feet using some printed risers, to keep the sensor at the right height. Having a less complex part will also save you cost in the long run, since milling a PCB with large cutouts is sooo much cheaper than a SLS-print.

Next step you could remove the circuit board from the mouse and have thin cables running from the buttons/sensors and have the board on the table.

Cool designs! I would to see such design go even further, no support, mouse optical sensor attached to the palm of your hand, wires go to "click-rings" around the middle and index fingers, so when you press the tip of a finger on the desk, it registers a click. Then the cord doesn't need to float awkwardly on the desk, make it follow your arm before exiting on your elbow, or make a bluetooth module on your wrist with a nice battery, weight should be no issue if it's like a watch, and you don't lift it at specific edges of a mouse, but everything is attached around fingers and wrists. Might be hard to design with traditional optical sensors though, since they go "out of focus" when you lift the mouse even just a little, you'd need to be perfectly hovering the desk at zero elevation for it to work. If something like this already exists, please send me its name!

hey opti a tip from a long time mouse enthusiast- be careful about the placement of the battery if you are gonna use it to shift the balance of the mouse. Furthest back doesnt always mean better just cause it might feel lighter. I've tested several mice with same shape, but some with center of mass shifted, and those with the weight a lot towards the palm can feel very off. Because you get an unwanted rotation of the distal part when you apply a lateral force to the mouse. Resulting in tracking an arc instead of a straight line. Ive found the mouse with the weight balance directly centered on top of the sensor to be most intuitive

The nerve going through your arm is a huge source of added click latency. Consider moving the actuators from the mouse into a separate PCB that you trigger by biting down on it to increase your reaction speed.

Why not attach the mouse to your hand so you literally dont have to grip it? Like put a rin on the top of the mouse that you slide your finger or fingers into. So the mouse is always linked to your hand without thinking about holding it.

I use a g502 x. I've never found the weight to be even something I think about while I'm using it. I actually prefer it because I won't acciedentally pick it up during longer sweeping motions. It's also nice because it fits my large palms and long fingers better. Having a low friction mouse surface eliminates all the problems of weight. Finally, lighter mice feel flimsy and I have an interest in longevity.

i'm disabled and have only limited function with my right hand.(left arm paralyzed, right thumb has limited strength) , and I'm considered a high functioning quadriplegic. i find the only mouse that works for me over the years has been a razer naga hex v1 where i place my index finger over the hex side buttons. I'm at the point now that i can't find any of these mice and the ones i find are dead or partially working so i've been piece mealing mice together the last few years. I'm now going to have to unshelve my 3d printed mouse project and attempt to build something similar to the hex but with updated parts. And yes i've tried razers newer versions but they've changed them too much for me to use them enjoyably. I've also tried dozens of different mice and none work right for me due to the weight or width or side buttons curving inward instead of outward like the hex does. This project is a great reference point for me to work from. Thank you for documenting your process!

Interesting evolution. Personally I'm interested in how a mouse like this would feel. One feature that would be a must for me is an easy way of cleaning though. Having a dog it can't be prevented that hair / dust get's inside and so cleaning of peripherals is normal practice for me. Maybe a nice touch was if there was an option for a coated PCB? And / or detachable shell so you could just throw it into the dishwasher if it's too fragile to wipe down? If a wired model comes out I might pick it up, even if it's just to test.

I've designed products for both injection molding and additive manufacturing for the past 12 years. Injection molding have it's limitations, and frankly a lot of unique products that are made for AM (3D printing) will loose a lot of it's key function/features if it were to get redesigned for Injection molding. You can get SLS PA12/PA6 made all over this damn planet, and frankly you can even just sell the STL bundled with the electronics/hardware and let the user do the assembly, and then work with various regional or online based 3D Print shops to provide on demand prints to your customers, or you can just get a mass batch of 100-500 made send to you, and you ship it out yourself.
