Super useful video, thanks. I had to change out the CMOS battery on one of these and was afraid I’d break the antenna wires getting the motherboard out. You just popping them off with tweezers was a huge confidence boost.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It helped me take mine apart to replace the CMOS battery. It was particularly helpful to see hot to pry the motherboard out of the case. As you mentioned in the video, it's mainly the audio port that you need to free by bending the front case out a little. I had 3 of them that I needed to replace. I found another video that showed how to attach the wires to a standard CR2032 battery using metal tape. I did that and saved myself probably $30. I don't know why Intel had to put the battery under the motherboard like that. It's a stupid design. And also, it would have been nice if the battery just fit into a slot like it does on most motherboards. I can see needing the wired version due to the small size of the motherboard, but, putting it on the underside of the motherboard is ridiculous. They must just view these computers are being disposable.

@@mouthpiec Yeah, but, you have to tear the wires off and then tape them back on with some metal tape. And then tape over it, or put another shrink wrapped sleeve over it

@@mouthpiec What kind of a computer do you need it for? I needed it for an Intel NUC. I found one on Amazon, but, people were complaining the positive and negative wires were on backwards. I'm amazed Intel doesn't offer a replacement part for it. I guess they just want you to throw your computer out and get a new one when the battery dies.

After building a number of tower PCs in the past, I have become a fan of the NUC and it’s small form factor design. The NUC is perfect for office work and general tasks like surfing the web and email which is what must people do on a PC. I recently purchased my first Mac. I went with the Mac Mini M1. Still learning how to navigate the MacOS user interface. Enjoyed the video

If a person doesn't need expandability, the NUCs are a great form factor. I currently have three. I got a Mac Mini M1 and it has been working great for me. I've been using Macs for over thirty years though. If you have any Mac questions, don't hesitate to ask. I can try my best to answer them. I don't consider any questions "dumb" when someone is learning something new.

How do you like the Mac mini M1? Thinking of buying it myself but would want to add more memory and storage so it may not make the most sense economically when its all added together. That being said I kind of want to switch to MacOS so I'd love to hear what you think of it so far!

The cooling fan may be the first component to be failed. I suspect if that component can be bought from the market.

They do seem easy enough to disassemble. The hardest part would be reattaching those WiFi antennas. Anyone who has ever done it will probably tell you that it may take a minimum of a few minutes unless you are used to them.

I replaced the Wifi adapter in my thinkpad notebook and I was never sure if I'm going to break the cable or port or not. I tried to position but since it was under my finger (to make sure I press directly down) so I was never 100% sure, and I also had to press with more force than I thought should be necessary until it worked somehow. I hate that UFL connector. My CPU is peaking at 85 Celsius so I'm unsure if I should repaste the heatsink but that wifi antenna connector makes me think twice :) taking out and putting the motherboard back seems a little finicky perhaps but by far not as scary.

Excellent Video. I have a Qn re: battery: My CMOS batter needs replacing. Can I replace just the CR2032 battery inside its yellow plastic housing - did you notice if you can get in there and disconnect the battery and replace it (there really cheap) OR do I have to buy the yellow housing ready to go with the cables and connector as in your link to the CMOS Battery Amazon link? thanks Sam
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't dig into that but I'm guessing the wire is permanently connected to the battery. They are often tabs spot welded to the battery and wires soldered onto the tabs. If you could theoretically make the battery assembly if you had a battery spot welder but it is probably easier to just buy one already assembled.

What is the recommended period for cleaning the fan?
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes 2 жыл бұрын
It all depends on how dirty the environment is and how often you use the computer. If it is in a dusty area or you have pets that shed, you would want to clean it more often. Sometimes you can hear the fan is louder due to debris in and around the vents. You can also see dust around the vents on the outside. If that is dirty, it is probably dirty inside too.

is the battery inside the yellow sleeve replaceable?
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes 2 жыл бұрын
I have a link in the description to a new battery. You could remove the yellow heat shrink and replace the battery and keep the original wires but the wires are welded to the battery so if you don't have battery welding equipment, you shouldn't do that repair (do not solder the wires!). It is easier to just by the battery with wires.
@mouthpiec
@mouthpiec 2 жыл бұрын
@@Rickmakes thanks.... but i don't have battery welding. Will tape work?
@Rickmakes
@Rickmakes 2 жыл бұрын
@@mouthpiec Probably not very well. Conductive epoxy might work but it costs more than buying the preassembled battery. You would also still have to reapply the heatshrink.
