Merely entering chat would not be enough. There is a reason Intel is down-playing the exploit. It requires physical access to the system to exploit. This is a threat to large companies due to evil maid attacks, but the average consumer would have bigger problems to worry about than the exploit if it is executed on their personal computer. Such problems usually involve the police or requiring self defence skills to deal with. This is very different from spectre/meltdown which were software based attack vectors so could be executed remotely and anonymously by malicious software, potentially even from within a browser (or so it was claimed).
@mikeydude7505 жыл бұрын
@@drsupergood8978 Spectre/meltdown were theoretically doable by software but they required so much preparation in order to be able to set up the exploit that it's highly unlikely that such an attack would be carried out by some random virus. @Zarcondeegrissom5 жыл бұрын
8 cores isn't that impressive to me after having a few for a few generations, and I seldom see the benefits of higher-revving engine RPM from an 8 core, not when horsepower is more important to my non-gaming needs. 80 horsepower (16 threads x 5GHz) from a 9900KeepSpending isn't that impressive compared to what I already have, and the 144 horsepower (32 threads x 4.5GHz) of the 3950x is just about a drop-in upgrade for my 3D render machine. I don't do single thread games, and 3D renders often take hours not less than a second that 'boost' applies, so that single-core 'boost' has never meant anything to me. While some games still are limited to the performance of a single thread, even games are starting to use more than 1 thread as a majority now, so the gains from a single core boost will probably see diminishing returns in the future, even intel has stoped selling 4 core 8thread CPUs as the 'top-end' consumer part'. remember when the 8700k was only 5% faster than a 7700k on many game benchmarks, and now a 4 core just can't cut it for some games. lol. Glad things are progressing again.
@Zarcondeegrissom5 жыл бұрын
HaX Von Cydow I would not be so brash on the 5GHz wall, remember only a few years back the 4GHz wall was a thing and you had to do exotic cooling (not a stock heatsink) to get the mythical 5GHz on many CPUs. Also, the max clock is a function of 4 things. how fast the fats can switch, the length of the traces between fets (propagation delay), and how many gates are between the input and output of the circuit between buffer/latch stages. Oh, and there is that heat dissipation with dense circuits thing as well. Eons ago, when SOI came out (or was it copper inlay), IBM was playing with 100GHz fets, so I can assure you, glass by itself is not the limiting factor for the apparent 5GHz wall, lol. AMD and Intel just got to get the propagation delays under control and maybe simplify some of their complex logic. Hell, the radio frequency NASA Deep Space Network uses to communicate with many craft is over 5GHz (8.4GHz band), granted not exactly the same kind of logic for a radio, however over 5GHz is more than feasible for some circuits. Maybe if they find workarounds for the limitations of using graphene that some ignore, then maybe it will become viable, glass has a ways to go tho.

Intel must be binning the hell out their chips nowadays to keep up with AMD. Also the KS can only maintain base clock at 127W, to hit the marketed sustained 5GHz all core boost you'll need to go well past 200W.
@V8Power53005 жыл бұрын
I remember the days when it was easy to add 1+ GHz
@drsupergood89785 жыл бұрын
Back then the reason one could do that was because manufacturers did not want to push the clocks for practical reasons rather than the CPU being incapable of doing them. Adding an extra 1+ GHz ruined any sort of power efficiency and required serious cooling, especially in the days before CPU boosting became complex and so such base clock speeds had to be factored into TDP for marketing. Only due to improvements in manufacturing nodes has running at such speeds become practical. The I9 9900KS with boost duration override consumes similar power to an overclocked quad core of old while having AVX and twice the core count.

People rly need to cool down with this whole frequency milestone cuz in the end it doesn't matter, what matters is the end result no matter if you're at 3gHz or 20 ExaHertz. And, Josh is right, a month ago people complaining about the Ryzen parts not hitting 5gHz could've just gotten an FX9590, sure it didn't boost all cores but that's not the point, people only ever cared about the label while you should just be caring about the end result. World record overclocking was held with the FX8350 for years, at single core OC and all-core OC but again, it doesn't matter cuz he wasn't beating any benchmark scores anyway, all he got was a listing on TechPowerUp. Sad. Performance Per Watt, and Performance Per Dollar is where it's always been and will always be all about. If frequency mattered, why is the 3950X beating the 9900KS to the ground with double the performance in multiple benchmarks while being 300mHz slower and less powerhungry?
@Rycotta5 жыл бұрын
@@z1mt0n1x2 Keep in mind most people only really game on their PC and not even at high resolutions. The fanboys that fight over stupid stuff like this are mostly gamers. I personally run a 9900k at 5.1ghz and all I do is game and it only cost me $479 for the CPU. Trust me I do envy the 3950x but I wouldn't be utilizing the core count because games are still being coded for single-core performance. So I find myself not willing to spend $270 more for performance that won't be utilized at all. This is the only argument someone can really make about getting the 9900k IMO; well until games are coded for multi-core performance.
@z1mt0n1x25 жыл бұрын
If your statement was even remotely true both Intel and AMD would still be branding Pentium and K8's as gaming CPUs in 2019... Unfortunately that's not how it is because most games today uses well more than 4 cores actively. I'd like you to fire up any modern game and post a screenshot of your Task Manager while the game was running and we'll see if you only have 1 core active or not. *Little bit of history tho...* Back in 2010, at the back of your DVD covers you can probably remember most of the modern games back then just listed "Quad Core" as a recommended system requirement, and I don't think the gaming industry has taken a step backwards since then. But let's make a list. Borderlands 3 - Recommended specs: 4-6 cores (i5 4770k / r5 2600X) source: borderlands.com Overwatch - Recommended specs 3-4 cores (core i5 / Phenom II X3) source: battle.net Hunt Showdown - Recommended specs 4 cores (i5 6600 / r5 1400) source: steam Minecraft - Recommended specs 4 cores (i5 4690k / A10 7800) source: mojang The Division 2 - Recommended specs 4 cores (i7 4790 / r5 1500X) source: ubisoft And that's the "recommended" specs for the average gamer given by the developers/publishers, and of course more cores doesn't mean the game will be restricted and/or limited to what is being recommended. To check and see what is actually being used, you open your Task Manager and make an estimate yourself. Of course, if you only have 1 or 4 cores in your system you won't see if the game can take advantage of 16 or 64 cores. Neither do we need to forget that many mainstream games are actually first and foremost developed for consoles which are equipped with 8 cores. I ain't arguing against your 9900k, it's a beast of a processor! But saying single-core performance matters for a gamer, a prosumer or an enthusiast in 2019 is a lame excuse for a bad benchmark. I'd be happy with the 9900k too, shit, I'm still using an FX6350, don't laugh at me ;D
