For the rising sun earring it might be for Demon Slayer since the main character Tanjiro originally wore the hanafuda earrings. Not defending them, since hanafuda, the rising sun imagery is now for imperial Japan. The creator of Demon Slayer has even apologized and edited the earrings to still fit the times the show is based, but no longer have imagery facing actual war crimes and imperial Japan. Some fans/cosplayers still use the original design, which they shouldn't.

Okay so the one at 9:15 has me having a midlife crisis at 3 am. So, I’ve been studying the Japanese language for about ehh...5??-ish years now. And surprisingly, ironically, maybe because of some internalized phobias I recently got over, I didn’t start watching anime until about a year ago, maybe a year and a half ago at most. HOWEVER one of my favorite anime now at this point is Demon Slayer, also known as Kimetsu no Yaiba. AnyWAYS, the main character, Tanjiro, wears earrings that have been oassed down from generation to generation (there’s a deeper story there that involves the sun and spoilers and yea, anyways), they are known as hanafuda earrings, which are actually modeled off the game hanafuda that was popular in Japan (due to yknow colonialism) and actually later became illegal because so was gambling, but then fun fact Nintendo was actually started as a company made to make hanafuda game cards. ANYWAYS yet again, the image is of a sun rising, over a hill, but the rays of the sun are black (not red as the rising sun imperial symbol usually is to my knowledge at least), as well as being slightly curvy in a way reminiscent of flower petals. So, to start off, when the anime was actually first released in Taiwan and mainland China, the symbol was actually changed slightly as to not cause any strife and yknow, just to be safe. HOWEVER, it was only done there! And as far as I know all the rest of the episodes, manga, figures, you name it WERENT altered (unless they were figures with less general detail or definition, then there are just no lines in general because they are sorta small and when figures are small they just leave out the tiny details like that sometimes yknow) Now, with this being said, my real question here, is due to the fact that the symbol has a meaning outside of imperialism, the anime takes place in a time where the wars have yet to happen, and may never happen depending on the timeline and universe, there is no reference or even hint of it being imperialistic, and even the symbol is slightly altered from the original, and especially the fact that these earrings were made to replicate cards in an almost ancient card game sorta central to Japanese history (and yknow the start of the entirety of Nintendo, no biggie), would these still be concidered a dogwhistle? Are they still a bad thing to like or appreciate, or he’ll wear? (Also I pose the question because I’m genuinely curious and autistic so I authentically have no clue, is the wearing of hanafuda earrings or other Japanese art pieces / anime pieces culture appropriation? Like I authentically don’t know and I would love to know for sure before I buy any like anime memorabilia because fuck I don’t wanna make that mistake).
