**Here is the translation** Starting this weekend, we will be resuming our Culture Invitations. We are presenting this to you, listeners, in the hope of easing your COVID fatigue a little. [music] The piece you are listening to is Mozart's Allegro in D major that has not been discovered nearly for 250 years. As if it were an unexpected little gift from Mozart to us suffering from COVID fatigue, the piece, dormant for a long time, has just woken up. We have the pianist Seong-Jin Cho with us today through Facetime, who premiered the work in Salzburg in Austria on Mozart's 265th birthday, January 27, 2021. Q: You are visiting Luxembourg right now. Many will be pleased to see you. Welcome, Mr. Seong-Jin Cho. SJ: Hello. Q: Following the 2016 and 2018 interviews, this is your third interview with us at the JTBC Newsroom. I am taking over as the interviewer for Anchor Seok-Hee Sohn, who did the previous two interviews. Thank you so much for making time for us. I understand that this is your first appearance broadcast after the performance, so I will start with a question that I am sure many people are curious about; how did it feel to be the first person in the world to play that Mozart piece? SJ: I've never imagined that I would be giving a Mozart piece a premiere in my wildest dream. (In a shy tone) There may not be that many performers given that honor. When I first was contacted, I was surprised, excited, and honored. Q: During those 94 minutes you played the piece, I was nervous for no justifiable reasons. It's a good thing that the music didn't run too long [LOL]. On the other hand, you didn't seem to be nervous a bit. SJ: (SJ smiles) My friends, when they sent messages to congratulate me, also mentioned that I must have been nervous. I wasn't that nervous; I was amazed and had fun playing it. Q: When you received the offer to give the world premiere, what thoughts came to your mind? I would have been in disbelief a little if it was, indeed, Mozart's work. SJ: I was taking a nap when I received the call. When I woke up, I checked the message, and at first, I thought I was still not fully awake. I reread the message, and it was Mozart's piece. I wasn't really in doubt of its authenticity. I was even more convinced that it was Mozart's work when I received the score in my hands. Q: What convinced you more? SJ: It is hard to describe it in words; I felt the unique musical characteristics of Mozart, which I could see from the score. I was even more convinced when I played it because I strongly felt that it was from Mozart's early works. Q: As you were playing it, I saw a smile on your face with the sides of your mouth raised with joy. I thought it was a rare time that I saw you smile during your performance. SJ (chuckles) It wasn't intentional. I am not sure; I was probably immersed in the music. Q: You were playing it joyfully. Perhaps it was due to how you played it, but I felt the piece was very delightful as well. You said that you like Mozart's storytelling ability through his music. Did you also see that on this piece? SJ: Yes. I think the piece that I played was cute, witty, and lyrical. I liked the contrast a lot. I see it as a form of storytelling. Mozart's music has a lot of operatic elements in general. For that reason, he is one of my favorite composers. I could also see his storytelling through this piece. Q: What story do you think 17-year-old Mozart was trying to convey through this piece? SJ: Of course, I've never met Mozart in person. And I don't think anyone knows his personality or how he was as a person. All we can do is guess. The way I picture young Mozart is pure-hearted and passionate about music. I could really feel Mozart's liveliness in this particular piece. Q: We can probably say everything 17-year-old Mozart wanted to say was all in the sheet music. Mozart has finally found someone who brings his score to life for the first time in hundreds of years. With that in mind, I imagine 17-year-old Mozart and Seong-Jin Cho are sitting in front of each other. Did you, sort of, get the feeling that you were meeting with Mozart face to face when you had the score delivered to you? SJ: That sounds romantic. When I play Mozart's music, I try to understand what was going through in this composer's mind writing it and see from his perspective. I can't dare say I was meeting with Mozart face-to-face; I tried to understand his situation. Q: I thought you probably took a longer time than usual contemplating how to interpret this piece because, obviously, you were the first person to interpret it. How was it? SJ: I only had about six days to prepare this piece. This piece was less than 2 minutes in length. I haven't practiced this many hours for a while; I practiced 5 hours a day, most of the time dedicating it only to this two-minute piece. There were no references; in that aspect, I felt a bit more burdened and challenged. I tried to make articulation and phrasing as clear as possible the way I felt it. Q: Six days must have been a short time to prepare. It was a premiere that no others played before. When it comes to interpreting pieces like this, do you usually try to be immersed in the piano or get your inspiration elsewhere, like when you go out for a walk or from your daily life? How do you get it done? SJ: All I could do was... all I had at that time was two pages of the score. So even when I didn't practice the piano, I sometimes looked at the score. One time, when I went out for a walk and to get a cup of coffee, I thought of the score suddenly. I looked at the score on my phone. So I was thinking about the music all day long. Q: Your name was primarily associated with Chopin before, but some people may correlate you with Mozart more after this performance. I heard you are in Luxembourg. Are you there for your concerts? SJ: Yes. I am performing Chopin's concerto tonight and tomorrow night here. Q: Europe's COVID-19 situation must be bad too. How are concerts being held given the circumstances? SJ: This is the first time I will play in front of a live audience after my October concert. The hall's capacity is over 1000 seats, but they only allowed 100 seats. Concerts are being held here because Luxembourg's situation is a little better than in other countries. In almost all cases, they are offering online concerts with no live audience present. Q: Yes. Everyone is being hit by COVID fatigue and needs comfort from art more than ever. It's hard to meet a live audience, though. I think you could be as disappointed in that sense. How are you managing it? SJ: It is unfortunate. Combining the time before and after the Chopin competition, this was the longest time I had gone without performing. So, the recitals I gave in Korea last October and November meant a lot to me, and I was more moved than the audience. Q: I am asking this because we are living through a global pandemic; what do you wish to do first when the pandemic is over? In your previous interview, you said you wanted to travel to Antarctica. SJ: I really want to be able to travel again. It is hard to move around on flights or trains these days. Things we took for granted feel precious now. I understand that the icebergs are melting and that climate change is severe. I want to travel to Antarctica someday. Q: Many of your fans in Korea are looking forward to your concerts as Antarctica will be awaiting you. Speaking of your albums, last year's Wanderer was the last album you had out, correct? What are your next concert plans in Korea? SJ: I am scheduled to perform in Korea in April, August, and towards the end of the year. I am unsure about the April concerts, but the August concert is outdoors in the park, and I will be performing with the Korean Symphony Orchestra conducted by Shi-Yeon Sung. I really hope it will go on as planned. I also hope everything goes back to normal soon. Q: I am sure Mr. Seong-Jin Cho's Salzburg performance was a beautiful gift for all of us who are tired from COVID-19. This will mark the end of our interview with Seong-Jin Cho. It was a pleasure to have you. SJ: Thank you.

조성진씨가 유럽에서 관중이 있는 연주회를 연다니..젊은 사람이지만 걱정이 된다. 아무래도 공연장은 폐쇄된 공간이라 불안해서 2020년에는 결국 단 하나의 연주회도 못 갔다. ㅠㅠ 조성진씨 얘기처럼 일상의 소중함을 많이 느꼈다. 여행과 문화생활이 빠진 삶은 진짜 우울한 버티기인 듯..
