Good stuff. As much as I think the aggressive Union moves were bad decisions, I like that people get to see them and how they turn out, as one of the most common criticisms of Meade at Gettysburg is that he didn't take the chance to decisively eliminate Lee's army. A lot of armchair generals just don't realize how much harder/riskier that would've been, and how it didn't necessarily play into Meade's objectives at the time - defending Washington was paramount, so he just needed to sit on defensive ground between Lee and the capital.

Ah, the good ol' "if only they had..." I love the "20/20 hindsight" theory, as really even it is not, since people often miss major factors, usually, but not by no means exclusively, logistical ones.
@LittleWarsTV
@LittleWarsTV 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed on all counts--it was very fun to see a more aggressive Union posture in this game. It did not end well for Sickles or Hancock, but the Federals had some limited success around Wolf's Hill and managed to catch Ewell's flank. There's no question it funneled the Confederate efforts into the center.

This year, primarily through the efforts of the National Park Service, I became immersed in the pursuit of studying each day's action as July 1st - July 3rd rolled on. THIS video was the highlight of my observance of the battle! I love the good-natured competition, which gave me chuckles more than once. I have only one complaint (keep in mind, this comes from an educator): We do NOT use dry-erase markers on paper! :)

Brilliant. Your best batrep yet. The map and the figures were amazing. The idea of letting the public vote on major strategic decisions was also brilliant. (I hope you try that again.) Refighting the battle on the actual battlefield was breathtaking. You also got a great balance of narration and moving figures on the battle field. I was able to follow it perfectly.

Getting public participation in the game was certainly a new and interesting wrinkle for this one. The American Battlefield Trust did a great job running the online polling and collecting the 10,000 votes. They really helped drive that part of the scenario and it's something we'd love to try again in a future episode.

Thanks, Brian! And yes, despite being forced to withdraw from the field, the strategic implications of the outcome in this game would have been profound. Lee's army was not crippled and the Army of the Potomac suffered a lot of punishment for holding the field. The rest of the summer 1863 campaign would have played out quite differently, indeed.

Agreed. In reality if the confeds had pushed forward and taken Cemetery Hill on day 1, Meade probably withdrawals to better ground and Lee claims a victory on northern soil. That strategy to reorganize just makes no sense in light of the real objective Lee had.

I love War games of this exact style. Although I actually haven't really ever played a war game, but painting and knowing about and painting of landscapes and uniforms is so far where my talents truly lay. Also knowing all about Napoleon's battles and campaigns, is where I also excell. The first battle I would love to do is ironically not a Napoleon Battle but in history a fairly unknown Battle in The Crimea War some 45 years later at Nov.5 1854 called " The Battle of Inkerman

After multiple viewings I wonder at some of the command decisions made by the viewers. You might try having the viewers pick a side and then only vote for that team’s command decisions for future games. This would lend to more balanced play and avoid viewers sabotaging the other side. Still, I feel like this was a fun “what if” Battle of Gettysburg. I enjoyed the inclusion of sickness affecting A. P. Hill and the deadly outcomes for Reynolds, Sykes, and Hancock. I would enjoy watching y’all play other Civil War battles.
@minsapint8007
@minsapint8007 5 жыл бұрын
This was a brilliant concept - the command decision idea worked very well to give an impression of how the battle might have been fought differently. I appreciate the rationale for the die roll to incapacitate General Hill but I would have been happier without that. You need a 2IC who can take over in that sort of situation. Everything just grinding to a halt should not be an option.

We did Gettysburg a while back with 9 VP's for Oak Hill, Gettysburg, Wolf;s Hill, Culp's Hill, Cemetary Hill, Peach Orchard, Devils Den, Little Round Top, Big Round Top (9VPs total) - 1st day Hill's Corp cleared Semenary Ridge of Union start troops and pushed Union back into Gettysburg, Ewell's Corp also arrived and captured Oak Hill (1VP) - at the end of the 1st day the Confeds pushed the Union forces back from Gettysburg (1 VP) back onto Culps Hill and Cemetary Hill where the Union spent the night entrenching ! Hills Corp left the town to Ewell's troops and started moving down Semenary Ridge toward the Peach Orchard which was already occupied by Union troops ! 2nd day - Longstreet's Corp marched south behind Semenary Ridge and attacked Union troops in Devil's Den and pushed the Union troops back onto the two Round tops (1 VP) in the morning - in the afternoon Longstreet's troops attacked both Round Tops and took them both (2VPs) with heavy losses as the Union fell back - meanwhile Hill's weakened troops (1st day losses) could NOT take the Peach Orchard from the Union troops dug-in there !! 3rd day - Both sides tried to gain some point advantage with the Confeds ahead 5 to 4 but the Union moved their strength around up to Cemetary Hill and attacked Ewell's troops in Gettysburg and took the town in the afternoon of the 3rd day - Union win 5 to 4 VPs with Wolfs Hill, Culps Hill, Cemetary Hill, Gettysburg,, and the Peach Orchard - Great fun !!!

Will the only thing missing is a element of Gen. Lee pressure to not just win a battle, but get a decisive victory, weight on his judgemental orders and the confusion influences on his subordinate officers to act, so for example toward the end being the last day Gen. Lee knew he wasn't in a idea situation for a complete route of entrenched Union holding all the high ground,however he was under a lot of pressure from Davis to get a result decisively, which is the reason why he put all in on the third day or under normal circumstances he might had listen to Gen.Longstreet and redeployed or withdrawn in order to fight to his advantage. Even if all those Union commanders were killed, the Northern press would have claimed a victory and Gen. Lee would still be a wounded force, but with a bit more but, surely not the same power if Pickett Division was not used or done as, I mentioned.

Where can I get hold of the map and the game rules? I was born just 80years after the battle and from as early I can remember I was given The Red Badge of Courage. the Classics Illustrated edition.
