Well, what can I say? You know I'm a big kid, and really, most of us are. So to kick of Series 3, here's the opening of the Toy Story 3 set from Hornby. #You've got a friend in me!#

Nice to see a non serious train set reviewed. I brought a cheap Hornby set to play, with my grandson who is 6. Trouble is I've already upgraded it with all the track kits and other "better" engines and a better controller, now I'm toying with the idea of a N gauge set up for my self. Damn you model trains :) You've caught another.

@FienStudios - the overall score is not based on an average of the previous scores. The overall score reflects how well the set performs it's duty as well - in this case, as a child's entry level train set. The overall score also accounts for originality, design and ease of use.

most 0-4-0 trainsets don't handle slow performance tests all and some of them the motors are pretty much R.I.P...

Cabooses were used in either direction. When the cupola was offset, senior conductors chose their preference whether forward or aft. It didn't matter with those railroads which had centered cupolas. Usually senior conductors chose forward as a sign of rank.

@drs66412 - right now they can be bought for about £35 so the set is worth it just for the railer, track and controller really.

One thing you could do to make the track look more like the picture on the mat is paint the sleepers brown. P.S welcome back!

seeing that Hornby has the old lima toolings for an American 4-4-0 like this one it seems odd they didn't reuse it for this set,(as they seemed fond of doing to create the Thomas models) especially when the film version actually had a tender, as for the couplings, I suppose they could be converted to regular ones, if one wanted, but the caboose could/would make an ideal "transfer wagon" with a regular coupling at the back, overall you hit the nail on the head, its aimed at young kids who loved the film and like trains, lovely review, great video.

What size track? The track is the standard Hornby OO track.

It's interesting that Hornby is marketing this product to three year olds. In the US the youngest age I have seen for electric HO/OO gauge trains is seven. Having said that it's a shame that this set isn't marketed to an older audience, those little 4-4-0's didn't have much in the way of appliances anyway. With the addition of a tender, handrails and main roads that little loco would be a fine model.

This is a toy set for kids, just barely a starter set. Hornby isn't even attempting to sell their Thomas and Friends Track Mat expansion packs with this set. But it may lead to some kids into more serious starter sets later. Not that a cheap 0-4-0 pocket pocket rocket preforms much better. There are two kinds of cabooses, either a center cupola or a off set cupola. Senior conductors had a choice choosing whether a off set cupola was forward or aft. A forward cupola usually signified a senior conductor.

when I first saw this in the Hornby catalogue i thought 2 things. 1. were is the tender it was in the film but not here the loco looks incomplete 2. are those coupling compatible with other Hornby stock if not why!!?! for a starter set its on to maybe thomas or smokey joe and then the railroad range.

dear ic82. remember, the second you stop being a child you grow old. im 60 love all train sets . if its serious then forget it, if this world had the brains that train set owners have god would be happy. i have me favs triang , im a muzo for 40 years a hobby turned into a income it lost the thrill. a piece of triang series 3 track is more to me than a fender 62 strat i have one of 40 guitars there just tools of the trade.enjoy opening them boxes it will last a lifetime. the hornby sweet and sour made in china its nice great detail got a load of it, but a 40 year old triang say off ebay in its box is magical!! like the old hornby doublo. and digital keep it no fan of it. back to mono !!.like your vids mate, jon

I agree there should have been a tender. An American 4-4-0 isn't a Thomas yard goat, it was a main line locomotive.

I bought two of these set`s a couple of year`s ago now,and yes the figures do come off quite easy.I yanked mine off with intent and with little effort,because I want to build a cheap Western style themed layout!However time has chuffed along very quick indeed upon my three rail layout, and I`ve not started with this wonderful idea yet.After paying a great fat licence fee to Disney I doubt if Horny are making a proffit on these toy set`s aimed at 5 yearold kiddies.EBAY has broken ones a plenty!

Even though hornby specializes in British engines and not American ones, how hard could it be too add the extra connecting rod to the cylinders and a tender?? I'm not sure why that would be a problem to do, because the engine looks silly without that rod and tender.

I haven't seen the movie, but a 4-4-0 American locomotive should have a tender. Up until the 1960s, American freight trains had to have cabooses at the end of the train.

@roflzlfor try steam and diesel by modelling a presevred railway line. However, have a good look around first, there are some great second hand bargains/shops where you can pickup more rolling stock and track at bargain prices, compared with an expensive new set. But make sure you try before you buy to ensure everything works.
