The DBA gives you a slight edge over MBA's. There are DBAs that teach but the audience of DBA is for someone who wants to climb the corporate ladder (even in government). You can specialize within the DBA. The other item to consider is that a DBA makes you look expensive to an employer.

It's what you make out of it. It's not the degree, it's the person.

As an IT consultant taking their last DBA class, this is pretty spot on. I think it's highly appropriate for senior professionals. Also, it is NOT that expensive. The problem is, you get what you pay for and cheap colleges are not always the best.

Thanks professor for sharing. During my undergrad and graduate studies I thought I learned best from the professors who happened to have a considerable professional experience and the reverse is true. My question is why do you think an executive with a DBA will not make a good professor? I'm planning to get my DBA from one of the top research business schools in the US and the program is taught by the same instructors who teach in the traditional PhD program. Yes the program is 3 years b/c the enrolled professionals have a lot of practical experience and I myself intending to teach upon my completion...would love to hear your pov. Thanks

most of the DBAs cannot find work in the academic sector. That is a high risk, because why would anyone want to do a DBA if he or she is already climbing the corporate ladder well with an MBA? does not make sense to me. Most of the firms in my country don't require a DBA for career growth. MBA is enough!! Unless, you are willing to do this to satisfy your ego, or start a fancy consulting or training firm.

Wouldn't have to "climb" the ladder with a DBA. You can apply and "get" the job. It is an advantage. Starting from a lower level and working your way up verses being already qualified and just getting that high rank position. Well worth it. I know.

To become a junior director lvl u need at least 10 years of experience and I only have 7 years a lot of companies reject me. After I finish my master's program with that I manage to get junior director positions. Meanwhile my friend with dba he becomes a director with 4 years of experience. With the highest academic u will be able to climb to the highest lvl easily.

The DBAs I have encountered taught at private non research colleges or community colleges and did not require a specific doctorate for their needs.

The simple answer is Yes! If your DBA is from an accredited University and if you have a good master's degree to complement it.

All depends on what you wanna do. The more experience you get in whatever field always looks better and better on paper with that DBA no matter what you will have to have experience in a field to get super high level positions but you will be able to get above-entry level consulting and corporate/government positions and almost always be on track for promotion. It’s much more future proof than an MBA you don’t hear anyone regretting them…..but make sure you get AACSB if possible. So many scam schools and recruiters are more than aware.
