Thank you, Jop! I have the 96-page "Case Study Houses" by Taschen, and this house was only given one page and two black & white photos. I would never have known about the assets of this house without your video, and the update on the renovation for the extra bedroom. And what an amazing view - and it could never be built out! Many thanks!
@SuperJobbelАй бұрын
One of the reasons why I started this channel is that there's so little information available about architecture. I had the same problem as you: Most books show only a few photos, and online the many photos are all over the place, again difficult to get a complete view. I was frustrated because I did not understand the houses. Therefore I started to collect the online photos and started to make walkthroughs with them. Which is the only way to show the true beauty of these houses. Now I share my explorations with other people! Helping them to understand the houses better.

As you point out, unlike the other Case Study Houses (or most of them), which used lots of steel, this uses more conventional construction and more available materials. But with the CSH goals of being "cost effective and designed for people with an average income." The other CSHs might have been bolder but I see a direct line from this Walker house to Joseph Eichler.
@SuperJobbel25 күн бұрын
I never heard of the Walker House by Jason Eichler but I checked it out and indeed there are strong similarities between both designs. Thanks for your reaction, I learned from it! :)
@xqqqme24 күн бұрын
@@SuperJobbel Just to be clear, there was never a "Walker House by Jason [sic] Eichler." *Joseph* Eichler was a U.S. home builder builder who, between 1949 and 1966, brought post-modern designs to tract (production) housing developments, chiefly in the San Francisco Bay area (9 communities) but also with developments in southern California (3 communities). What I meant by seeing "a direct line" here was that since the Walker House used more available materials and more conventional construction, it would have been more in keeping with what a production home builder like Eichler would have adopted to build at that scale. It is estimated that, in total, Eichler built more than 11,000 of his homes. They were very low-priced at the time...and are worth staggering sums of money today.
@SuperJobbel23 күн бұрын
@@xqqqme Oh sorry! But I ment I checked out the Eichler design, Walker is off course the name of the architect of this house. But it was spelling mistake, I wrote it down wrong...haha. But I never heard of Eichler and googled his name, and saw the similarities between his designs and CSH nr18, based on the Google images. Thank you!

This might be my favorite CSH so far. I like the added 3rd bedroom but only wish it was not accessible only through bedroom #2. I know this area well; I did the HVAC on a luxury condo for the Kohls family after they sold their stores not too far from this home's location.

Nice video, as always, but I can't say I'm overly impressed with the layout of this house. The floor to ceiling "windows" of the main bedroom that look into...the living room, is a little weird. It's almost as if that area of the living room should instead be outdoors, which would make more sense, imo. Also, the only way to get to the added third bedroom is through the second bedroom, also not ideal. Maybe there should be at least a separate entrance from the courtyard so it could be a guest bedroom, or used for something else.
@SuperJobbelАй бұрын
Yes, the window from the bedroom to the livingroom was done to catch a glimpse into the pacific ocean from the bedroom. I agree that the placing of the3rd bedroom is weird, but it was a later addition, not an original part of the design. I agree with you that a 2nd entrance from the courtyard was a better solution, making it a guest bedroom. For me this house is interesting but not very good, still worth to make a video about.

Jop, thank you for this fascinating video about the beautiful CSH 18. I would love to live in this house, not only for the spectacular view. The purity and simplicity of the design, and the ingenious use of closets and the fireplace as room dividers make it great and comfortable. Something like the Case Study House program should be done nowadays. I doubt they could improve on the designs.
@SuperJobbelАй бұрын
Yes, the simplicity and purity is what so great about this design. and the view is beautiful. This house shows that CaseStudy project was intended for people with an average income, not for millionaires. Today we need more CaseStudyHouses like this, but most designs are considered to small for todays standards. Also today the CSH design are not even that cost effective anymore, and there are cheaper, but less tasty, ways to build a house these days. so unfortunately not many CSH design will be built.
@madamemarmotАй бұрын
@@SuperJobbel I understand that nowadays people want bigger houses, but I maintain that if a house were designed well, they might be satisfied with a smaller actual footprint, if the layout were efficient and harmonious. I think that today we don't always arrange the space in the most optimal way, so we try to compensate by just adding square footage. But a thoughtful process could encompass it all: good, but cost effective, sustainable materials, and a comfortable feeling that comes from good design. That would be a Case Study House for today. Please keep on making your educational and enjoyable videos.

Great that you liked the video. To tell you the truth: this house isn't my favorite either. But stil I thought it was important to make a video about it, because it shows the low budget origins of the Case Study Program, it shows how simple and cost effective some of the designs were: not spectaculair but aimed at middle class families with average incomes. After this video I return to the John Lautner projects which are more complex and more spectaculair.
@ghostbeetle2950Ай бұрын
Seems that this Case Study house is a perfect example of the good old "Location, location, location!" ;) Very nice, clear simple lines, but with a very homey feel to it. But I keep thinking back to ... Frank Lloyd Wright, I think? (or was it Lautner?) and his dictum that you should build INTO the hill, not on top of it. I adore buildings that play with different levels. Thank you for another great tour, Jop!
@SuperJobbelАй бұрын
Hey @ghostbeetle2950 sorry for my late reaction, I was on holliday. But I always respond, although sometimes a little to late. Yes, FL Wright always said that you should built on the slope of the hill, not on the top. Because this allows different floorlevels. These 4 CSH houses however, are built on a large flat piece of ground that ends with a very steep cliff that overlooks the ocean, so there was no really a climbing hillside, more like a ravine. Also the CSH designs come from a different vision in architecture: the international style, much different thant the organic architecture by Wright and Lautner. There is however, one CSH design, nr. 26 that is indeed built on a hillside, cantilevering over a valley!
