John, I got a Lane cedar chest for $5 at a garage sale once. The top was badly scratched and the veneer was off in a few small places. I sanded the top and glued a bit of new veneer on and it has been in my living room ever since.One thing I did: If you tell Lane the model number they will send you a new lockset free of charge. It's one that won't lock if a child closes themselves inside. So it's a safety measure. Funny thing about that Hot Wheels garage. I bought the exact same one at a recent garage sale and brought to my son's house for my grandson. However, the track could not be put together as pieces were missing. They finally had to get rid of it over my grandson's protests. My son texted me later and asked me to please stop buying "big plastic things" and bringing them into his house! :)

Very nice job on the wrenches John. I am happy you went back to get the chest. I have my mothers cedar chest in my family room. She would be 103 years old if she were still alive. Her cedar chest has a lot of fancy trim pieces so I suspect it was handed down to her. The Hot Wheels garage piece was pretty cool and plenty restorable.

Just got to watch your video,it was great as always. You can’t go wrong with a Mayhew chisel . They make good quality chisels and punches. Also great 👍 find on the cedar chest, it should clean up fine and look awesome when refinished. Omg! Yes! Of course I would have taken it! Ha! 6 days a week and twice on Sunday my friend. I can’t wait to see it finished. That’s so crazy!! What comes to my mind immediately when I see all these things you show us is money!! It’s free money! A little time and work that we enjoy doing anyway and it’s 98% profit. You could sell these things so easily too!! I would bet that anything that you showed in the past wouldn’t take more than a week to unload!! Cleaned up or fixed of course. Have a happy holiday weekend buddy.

In my neighborhood, we have people - scrappers - that go around with beat up vans and pick up trucks that make the rounds picking up items worth selling. Nothing decent lasts more than an hour, so if you see it you better grab it right then because there is no time to waste debating on it. Had a big regret two weeks ago, my neighbor threw out an old jukebox. It was one of those ones that you turn the knob and the pages flip, then you select a button to play a song on a 45. I saw it as I was driving by and gasped, my wife said, "You better not. Don't even think about it." I thought about how I could lug that thing home and within 5 minutes a scrapper came by and snatched it. There's a good chance I'll see it at the local flea market now. I'm amazed at the quality of items in your neighborhood!

I grew up a voracious reader and I think I have a good vocabulary. The word "calk" as a traction stud on a horseshoe is a new one to me. I had no idea you could add "studded tires" to your horse. Thanks.
@ScoutCrafter2 жыл бұрын
That word had me scratching my head too for some time because I didn't know what the wrench was for until further research. The shoes had threaded holes that accepted the calks and provided that much needed traction. A horse on ice with steel shoes is not a pretty sight! =D Thanks!

That sure looks like a hydrant pentagon operating nut. Not sure about the other end of the wrench. Looked up Cusack Howe Co. Phil. PA but didn't turn up anything. Could have been for a warm hydrant, smaller than what we see as a street fire hydrant. I could have found a use for the cedar chest but I have learned not to take things unless I am specifically looking. My finding and adopting stuff with my optimism for getting the project done leads to more stuff to store. I think you did well to adopt that chest. That will look good.

Talk about a video with a happy ending. I'm very glad you saved that antique hope chest. I remember the video you did when you restored the previous chest. It came out beautifully. You could do the same with this one, but since your gf is an accomplished furniture restorer, restoring it together would be a cool and instructive video. I also thought the first wrench was an alligator wrench. I have some alligator wrenches. They look like they would work well, but they actually arent a good design. Too bad about the kids bikes. There are bike shops that would take those bikes in and make them available to low income kids at little or no cost. Looking forward to a video on the chest restoration.

Hi Scoutcrafter that chest was a great find. The thing about picking things like that up are you have to have a need or know someone who wants or needs it. A lot of that stuff would be great if you had a flee market where you could sell the stuff and make a little money. I don't know why the people that throw the stuff away don't donate the stuff but some times they are hoping someone will take it.

So I've been condensing my tool collection for a little while now and I've been in the market for one of those absurdly huge tool cabinets in hopes of being able to store all metrology equipment in a single cabinet. I'm sure you are aware, these are quite expensive. And everything I have is cast iron so I can't get away with husky or something, I need lista grade cabinets. So I've been dithering over the price of various collections and the other day I came across a yard sale that was full of huge dark Gothic furniture. I ended up buying a pair of brake fronts, matching for the total of $60! I believe they are made of Dalmatian oak, heavy as could be and incredibly well made. I got both of these cabinets for less money than I would have spent on drawer liners if I went with tool cabinets. So I thought it was worth sharing, sometimes the best solutions are not necessarily the obvious ones. As a bonus, I've done some testing and it seems to hold temperature and humidity better than high-end steel cabinets.
@jpsimon2062 жыл бұрын
They do look a little weird in the shop though
