I’ll never understand why everyone thinks of French Guiana and Guadeloupe, fully integral departments of France that are indistinguishable from a mainland department except for location, as territories/colonies, and Alaska and Hawaii, fully integral states of the US that are indistinguishable from a mainland state except for location, as states. If someone could explain that I’d appreciate it.

This are not a "fully integral departments but "fully paying colonial tax & population territories". I live in Réunion, we even pay for EU products up to 50% colonial taxes ! A shit system, with a successive population exchange: public workers from mainland France get 35% overpay, ours just get shitjobs in their banlieue. If ever US wants us: I go straight away - shame & sh*t on you, France& Macron - your corrupt system does not work ! Go home, stay away !

You are forgetting the islands of St. Pierre & Miqueon that are part of France, but nestled on the Eastern Coast of Canada. The two small fishing islands actually use Euros and French plugs and voltage for their electric although they could take a small, two-person boat to the closest part of Canada.
