Interfaith Marriage: Applying Quranic Rulings | Dr. Shabir Ally

Why does the #Quran seem to prescribe different rulings for #Muslim #women than it does for men? How do we understand verses that concern women marrying people outside the faith? In part 1, Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Safiyyah Ally looked at Quranic verses on the permissibility of interfaith marriages. In part 2, we look at how to relate these rules to our contemporary context.

Shabir Ali should fear Allah and don't be a JACKASS in public, “And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikun till they believe (in Allah Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater), even though he pleases you. Those (Al-Mushrikun) invite you to the Fire, but Allah invites (you) to Paradise and forgiveness by His Leave, and makes His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) clear to mankind that they may remember.” [al-Baqarah 2:221] Imam al-Tabari said: “What is said concerning the interpretation of the words “And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikun till they believe (in Allah Alone) and verily, a believing slave is better than a (free) Mushrik (idolater), even though he pleases you” is that what Allah meant by that is that Allah has forbidden the believing women from marrying a mushrik, no matter what kind of shirk he believes in. So, O believers, do not give your daughters in marriage to them, for that is forbidden to you. For you to give them in marriage to a believing slave who believes in Allah and His Messenger and that which he brought from Allah is better for you than to give them in marriage to a free mushrik even if he is of noble descent and honourable origins, even if you like his descent and background… It was narrated that Qatadah and al-Zuhri said, concerning the phrase “And give not (your daughters) in marriage to Al-Mushrikun”, It is not permissible for you to give them in marriage to a Jew or a Christian or a mushrik who is not a follower of your religion.” (Tafsir al-Qurtubi, 2/379)

I've been exploring various perspectives on the topic of Muslim women marrying non-Muslim men, and among the numerous sources I've watched, Dr. Shabir Ally's response stands out significantly. His delivery is eloquent and devoid of any judgment, striking a harmonious balance between practical considerations and the teachings of the Quran. In contrast, other scholars and religious figures often present stark, black-and-white viewpoints, sometimes in a manner that can be intimidating. However, Dr. Ally's approach is characterized by kindness and an absence of judgment. His concluding remark, "be your own judge and decide for yourself," resonates as a beautifully articulated statement

Those scholars just sit there and decide what’s halal and what’s haram. The prophet himself didn’t determine the halal and haram only Allah swt did. If Allah swt doesn’t specifically say something is haram then it’s not haram! Khalas! This is how we end up with Everything being haram!!

This video is super interesting. I’m surprised there aren’t more on the subject. I read an interesting article and study by a French scholar who says, among other things, that in the verse 5 of Sura 5, there are 3 things that God is allowing men. Good food, Muslim women and women from the people of the book. And that scholar explains that it doesn’t make sense to have symmetry in these permissions only on 2 thirds of the verse and make the last third reverse, non symmetrical (to women). And this is a ruling is made by scholars who interpret the verse this way. There are other arguments he brings forth and I thought it was interesting...

What if the marriage is between a Muslim man and a woman who is not a person of the book, but is not a polytheist. For example what if the woman believed in a God but not a religion. Another example would be if the woman was athiest. There is no prohibition in the Quran as far as I know against this, as the word Mushrikeen used refers specifically to the polytheists, but the Quran only says a man can marry a person of the book. What would be the ruling upon this? Thank you

I heard that you can't marry atheists. And if she believes in god but not a religion then she's technically not a atheist but she definitely isn't a muslim either. So if anyone does meet such a person then introduce them to Islam little by little. After she's a Muslim, don't go doing things like discouraging him, humiliating him and criticising him for not being able to follow through the religion to the fullest. Too many people and even scholars do that. They go in like you no pray 5 times a day, you like introverted things but they're haram cause most things an introvert likes is haram, doing this is haram doing that is haram, you in non muslim land, migrate asap or you no Muslim. Don't do whatever this is.

Nor shall you give your daughters in marriage to idolatrous men, unless they believe. A believing man .is better than an idolater, even if you like him. Hmmmm.....this could be a deceptively complex question. Certainly most people in modern society might view all Ibrahamic traditions as Monotheistic. However I have been noticing a growing number of Muslim clerics making reference to Christian Faith as polytheistic by dint of believing in a Triune God. Does not repeated reference to Allah (swt) as "without partner" in our prayers affirm this difference? In my own case, my partner is not Muslim though we each avidly encourage each other in our spiritual progress and religious practice. Seems to work for us.

Well technically the Quran itself accuses Christians of practising a 'polytheism' of sorts, since they associate Jesus with God. Nevertheless, the original faith which Jesus delivered in his time was the True Faith of his era, so it's originally it's still a monotheistic faith

As for marrying a 7th century Christian, you must think about what kind of Christians lived back then. There were no Protestants in the 7th century. Orthodox Christians, Monophysites, and even Nestorians regarded marriage as a Sacrament. For a Christian woman to marry a Muslim man, the marriage would have to be done by a Christian priest in order for the marriage to be Sacramentally valid. I know that it is forbidden for Orthodox Christians to marry heretics. In our view unitarianism is heresy. So, no priest would perform the Sacramental service for a Christian woman and a Muslim unless the Muslim man becomes a Christian. Any marriage performed by an imam would be viewed as Sacramentally invalid. If a Christian woman were to marry a Muslim without permission from the Church and she were not married Sacramentally in the Church to anyone for that matter, she would no longer be allowed to receive Communion in the Church. Also, there would be the issue of children. The children would need to be baptized and chrismated after they are born. At an Orthodox Christian baptism, the parents and god-parents of the child say that they worship Jesus as their King and their God. No Muslim would say that. Also, they recite the Nicaeno-Constantinopolitan Creed. (The Creed written at the First Council of Constantinople in 381 A.D., commonly called the Nicene Creed, although there was an earlier creed written at the First Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. which is actually the Nicene Creed.) If a Christian woman refuses to get her children baptized and chrismated, she is not allowed to receive Communion in the Church until she does that. (I have seen many Orthodox Christian baptisms. I am Orthodox. I speak from knowledge.) As for Jews, I know that Jews only want to marry Jews. I think Jews in the 7th century were much stricter about that in the 7th century. Jews do not believe that Jesus is the Messiah. They do not believe Muhammad is a prophet either. Therefore, it is not likely that a Jewish woman would marry a Muslim man in the 7th century. Jewish rabbis would insist that any children born in such an interfaith marriage with a Muslim be raised up as Jews and not as Muslims. I used to know a Jewish woman who had converted to Christianity. She told me that after her conversion, her parents had a funeral service for her and would no longer speak to her. Some things to think about when interpreting those verses in the Quran.

How can a Muslim man marry a Jew or Christian woman when Allah told us not to take non-Muslims as wali or intimates? Is it possible or desirable for one to marry a Jewish or Christian woman without being a wali or bitanah of hers? Firstly, a Muslim man should marry a Muslim woman. He must have a very good justification if choses not to. For example, if he can’t find a Muslim woman to marry (which is rare), then it might make sense to marry a Jewish or Christian woman. Even so, the Jewish or Christian woman must be a pious woman who follows the Torah or Gospel respectively. From a purely legal perspective, it is makruh (disliked/hated) for a Muslim man to marry a Jewish or Christian woman without a very good reason. Makruh can be thought of as “barely legal”. Just because something is barely legal, does not automatically mean it is also the morally right thing to do. There are good reasons for that which I explain below. In my opinion, based on what my I’ve observed living in several Muslim countries, if a Muslim man living in a Muslim country marries a Jewish or Christian woman, there’s a good chance that sooner or later she will end up seeing the true beauty of Islam and eventually convert to Islam. Not guaranteed, but likely. Moreover, there will be peer-pressure on her as many of her in-laws and her children will probably be Muslims. If, however, he marries in a non-Muslim country, then chances are that she will remain on her religion and raise his children as Jew or Christian. While not guaranteed, but it is likely. Is this a desirable situation for a Muslim man who loves Islam? Is it worth the risk? Men and women often find that they cannot be best friends after being married for just a short time. This is true even though they were in love with each other before marriage. Yet, they remain married for the sake of their reputation, children, family, or money, etc. Again, is this an ideal situation? Of course not. But it happens. Is it possible for a man and a woman to be married yet not be close intimate best friends? Yes. It does happen, unfortunately. It is a thing. Loveless, sexless marriages do exist. It’s obviously not an ideal situation, but legally possible to marry someone you don’t love. In today’s romance-obsessed societies, we think love is the only reason for marriage. Historically, kings, princesses, and sultans married for political reasons. Some Ottoman Sultans married Christian women to bring peace between Turks and Romans. ولله الحمد أوَّلًا وآخرًا.

If the interpretation is that things are generally permissible as long as it's not explicity forbidden in the Qur'an then why does Allah swt specify that Muslim men are allowed to marry Christian and Jewish women? He could've just stayed silent on the matter and it would be generally accepted that both Muslim men and women can marry the people of the book. Unless of course that tribal intermingling was not the custom pre-Islam. And if that was the case and Allah swt wanted to open up marriage for both Muslim men and women that one would assume He would've explicitly stated it. The fact that Allah swt went out of His way to specify that Muslim men can marry the other women means there was a clear indication that this should not be generalized to both sexes. Your new interpretation creates confusion and Allah swt is not the author of confusion. In fact one of His names is "al Mubayin" the One who makes things clear. Thank you. Jazakum Allah Khair.

Deriving “rulings” isn’t based solely on one’s personal understanding of the Quran, and Quranic exegesis isn’t solely based on trying to imagine what the cultural situation was at the time of revelation. One of the most important differences between Islam and other faith traditions is the documented life example of the one bringing Revelation. One might come up with multiple possible understandings of Quranic verses, but the actual practice of the Prophet is always definitive. If there was never an example of Muslim women marrying non-Muslim men during the Prophet and Successors’ time, that should give pause. There is an entire hermeneutical tradition behind deriving legal rulings. If one truly cares about doing what is correct according to what God has revealed, one should consider all valid approaches to discover it before choosing “ what feels right”. God knows best.

@@person1420 You actually illustrated what is NOT a practice of the Prophet. Please reflect more deeply. No one is saying the practice of the Prophet is only permissible action to take. The general rule in Islamic jurisprudence regarding issues outside of religious belief and formal worship, is that all things that are not specifically prohibited are allowed . However, The prohibition of Muslim women and interfaith marriage is there in the Quran, was observed by the Prophet, and the closest generations following. This makes it normative. The jurists can look at specific circumstances to see if exceptions are warranted, but never in contradiction to what is clearly established by the Quran and the prophetic example. We wouldn’t have cellphones if Muslims did not develop the mathematical tools necessary for science to develop as it did. I hope you understand a little better.

Anyone who has a bit of logic left in his brain can easily deduct how manipulatively he's talking about such a clear fact in the Quran, just to be included in the community of western world. The truth is, even in a normal conversation where context is when the community doesn't believe a certain thing 'generally', if you'd want to let them know that they can believe that certain thing, you'd tell them just specifically what they can believe from what they were believing before and do about that fact and then the rest is left to what they were believing before. Save yourself from these so called scholars who want to save themselves from the consequences of telling the truth. The truth is when Quran tell us what we can eat in the Non-Veg section and explain the ruling about it, it just tells us what we can eat and it doesn't mention each and everything what else we can't eat, similarly on in our normal conversation for instance if we would say specifically 'he can have it' when adressing a group, it would just mean that only he can have it. When adressing anything about marriage it's understood that both men and women are being addressed because marriage includes both of them then the ruling about interfaith marriage is being told. Seems like Dr. Shabir Aly forgot that Quran claims itself to be protected from any kind of amendment, your take on Quran meaning should be interpreted as per what (western) society believes now is just against the Quran's claim itself. Do not try to make adjustments in the Quran for what you desire, this is just exactly the same as what Christians did to bible.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Muslims are agreed that a non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim, and a non-Muslim man cannot marry a Muslim woman. End quote from al-Fataawa al-Kubra (3/130). Moreover, “Islam is to prevail and is not to be prevailed over,” as the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said. Narrated by ad-Daaraqutni; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami‘ (no. 2778) The man is in a position of leadership over the woman, and it is not permissible for a non-Muslim to be in a position of leadership over a Muslim woman, because Islam is the true religion and all other religions are false. If a Muslim woman marries a non-Muslim man, knowing the ruling thereon, then she is a zaaniyah and is subject to the hadd punishment for zina. If she was unaware of the ruling, then she is excused, but they must be separated, with no need for talaaq (divorce), because the marriage is invalid in the first place. Based on that, the Muslim woman whom Allah has honoured with Islam and her guardian must beware of that and adhere to the limits set by Allah, and be proud of being Muslims. Allah, may He be exalted, says (interpretation of the meaning): “Whosoever desires honour, power and glory then to Allah belong all honour, power and glory (and one can get honour, power and glory only by obeying and worshipping Allah (Alone))” [Faatir 35:10].

😊 Isn't marriage be based on love in hearts brother , Allah loves all irrespective of their religion just like how Sun shines on all equally,it is we humans who interpret wrong things and corrupt our hearts with bigotry and hate , when it is true love the utmost importance is for that love ,and if not and it's arranged marriages then the rules of families, societies can be followed,if we don't understand this simple logic then we are truly lost
