Interior Design - A Fresh Take On Traditional Style

Designer Emily Griffin takes a modern approach to traditional style in a young family’s home. See how she puts a contemporary spin on antiques, dark wood and classic design elements.
The home’s entryway welcomes with a patterned rug and repurposed chair, providing a taste of what’s to come. A piano room that doubles as a cocktail room is the perfect place for the family to entertain and play music. An old English pedestal table in the adjacent dining room offers contrast to a modern, high-lacquered walnut credenza, while a hand-painted treatment on the walls gives the effect of fallen leaves. Emily gave the kitchen a quick update with new pendant lights, drapes and kid-friendly chairs in the breakfast area. A palette of orange, wheat and grey hues warms up the family room. Upstairs, the luxurious principal bedroom features cherry-blossom wallpaper, a fireplace and a large silk rug underfoot.

I have had trouble with designing my house. It's crazy when you have pieces from your grandmother (traditional) and mother (mid century) and your own pieces (mostly Ikea). And after moving around a lot since small with my mother collecting pieces from Korea and lovely stuff from car boot sale in the UK and myself in Egypt and Chile it's even crazier. I love the McGee design but after watching this video I think I get the idea of how to incorporate all that into one and still make it a nice comfy home with an identity and history to it. Thank you for inspiring!

Traditional decor should never even 'go out of fashion'. It's the present manic obsession with so-called minimalist industrial and commercial-looking decor for homes that should be discarded for good - decor that are bland, soulless and frankly make you feel like an automaton/robot in sterile environments.

YES, the floral arrangement on top of the fireplace mantel caught my attention at the beginning. Was gonna comment on that one, and the very last part of the video she specifically talked about it. It's so gorgeous. Who ever made the arrangement is a genuis, the colors combo and the size. it's so refreshing - new. modern floral arrangement juxtaposed to it's traditional setting.

Gorgeous home!! I too am no fan of “mid century modern” - I’m old enough to remember that period and always thought it looked (and felt) uncomfortable and overly angular then. My home is furnished with dark cherry in Federal and Georgian styles, need help with updating so as not to look like “grandmas house”. The white paint/fabrics help a lot.

Really beautiful. Just one tiny note: a piano between a window and a fireplace that's an absolute non-sense. It works for decoration but it's the worst thing to do for the piano.

@@sladjanasimic5486 I think it's because it can change the wood. The quality of wood plays a very important role in the quality of sound it produces. Also, heat can change the tuning of strings. That's why from time to time they have to retune pianos.
