I love that "leave the vintage homes to the people who appreciate them" idea! We just finished rehabbing and gently expanding a 60 year old house and we love it's quirks and smaller rooms. One thing I've long hated is doing things the "safe" way because that's what the people around you (or a real estate agent) know. My current home is in an *ahem* aesthetics - free part of the country and so many of my design choices were poo poo'd by the builder only for him to later eat his words. If you've seen something and you loved it, find a way to incorporate that lived experience into your home. For me, it was pulling ideas from my Grammie's 1958 kit house, a wall of floor to ceiling windows a'la coastal sunrooms, and incorporating strong historic colors I'd seen work in other places. The key to it all was working from the style of the house and what we already had for color, shape, and tone decisions.

Painting over beautiful furniture with beautiful wood grain is a trend I hope stops soon. It breaks my heart every time someone paints a classic MCM, Art Deco waterfall piece, or an antique. There are exceptions, like painting low quality or severely damaged pieces, but I’m seeing people paint furniture and hardware, like Bakelite handles in great condition, that only require cleaning and polishing. It’s sad watching people not appreciate great craftsmanship and destroying history one piece at a time. Leave quality pieces alone and leave them for the people who will appreciate them.

@@curtischildress9580 It is sacrilegious, really. I have some pretty cherry/rattan end tables and coffee table and a friend said that I should paint it white. um, no. I really, REALLY dislike open concept kitchens!!! It breaks my heart to see old home interiors demolished only to float a giant island between the kitchen area and the family room. My home is a 1920 4 square. It is open enough to know what is happening in the other rooms and have a cohesive design plan, but still has some semblance of designated rooms. I do still have a few fluffy pillows in a spare room. Remnants from having teen daughters. I keep them for my cats. Lol. They LOVE fluffy pillows. Since they were cheap I launder them regularly.

On point, as always! I never liked those grey floors or the general trend for grey and white everything. The way it was often done was so sterile, unimaginative and institutional. I spend every day working in a depressing grey and white box. The last thing I want is to come home to a depressing grey and white box too. In terms of trends I'm over, I know this is controversial, but I'm really tired of all the 'midcentury modern' stuff. Ugly furniture on stick legs, boring boxy shapes and god-awful knock-off sputnik light fittings everywhere you go. I know loads of people claim to love it, but I just don't get it. No more 'clean lines' - I want dirty lines! Love the suggestion regarding antiques, second-hand and new-to-you items. I've taken your advice from a previous video and ordered two antique candle sconces to frame my fireplace. Funny you mentioned French style as they're art nouveau and remind me of the wonderful architecture I've seen in the older parts of Paris.
@rachelm99252 жыл бұрын
I was about to write almost the same comment. Agree with midcentury modern... My 98 year old gran has the original stuff and I feel like it belongs with her (I love her but her home reflects her age). Also love the idea of not needing all new. Brilliant for the environment too
@Timmakesmusic2 жыл бұрын
@@rachelm9925 My grandparents had some of the original MCM stuff too, as well as some pre-war furniture. Even as I child, I remember noticing the lack of craftsmanship and durability in the MCM pieces compared to the older pieces. They always looked industrial and 'fake' to me, somehow and lacked the magic of the older furniture. Although even they were much better quality than a lot of the mass-produced and flatpack stuff that's around these days. Not needing all new (or any new at all) is definitely a great idea. I try to buy second-hand whenever I can. If nothing else I find the process much more fun. I hate shopping, especially in chain stores, but I can happily potter around antique shops, thrift stores and second-hand shops for hours.
@danapb2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree AND disagree with you more! Grey floors have never made sense to me. Unless someone lives near the beach and is going for a drift wood look, maybe??? Other than that, nope! Now MCM furniture is special to me because I grew up with it. Born in the 60s and I remember my parents' sun clock, huge ashtrays, oversized stereo console, stick leg tables, etc. So I have a fondness for the simplicity of it. Anyway, to each his/her own!
@Timmakesmusic2 жыл бұрын
@@danapb Ha ha! I knew my comment would be controversial. 😂 I know a lot of people love MCM, and good for them! I think it can be a hard style to make fresh and interesting though (I sometimes call the contemporary version of MCM 'Blandi' style because I'm a terrible person). I've heard MCM described as 'motel furniture' and I think it can give off that vibe sometimes. I do like a nice sunburst clock or mirror though. Interestingly, that's a design that goes back centuries and was reinterpreted in MCM. I find it fascinating how styles and trends are constantly being reimagined.

I don’t like being in a hospital and never feel relax in a working office, is like someone is going to think that am not working and just sitting doing nothing. I want a home with color and memories of place’s I have been and things I love around me without feeling like I am a bound servant with a limitation to what I can bring to my room or have around me. Why anyone want to live like that bits me with minimalist design, what about their history and generational antiques that need to be pass down to the next generation for keeping their history? I believe if the design trends continue there will be no history to pass to the next generation, I still feel most people go for the design because they can not afford to furnish their house and some are just followers of trends just to feel like they belong. My home is my castle and in a castle you come across different objects of size, shape and color.

So glad that you as an interior designer is stressing the aspect of indivuality and personal taste . Too many new spacious homes today get proffesionals who make homes look like an office. Grey , glass, empty but cold and unwelcoming. The people living in these spaces are too "scared" to change anything or have no confident in their own selves . I know someone who build a new huge house very modern grey white and black. She even threw out all her linen and bought black bedsheets. Bathrooms with dark black stone walls with a small window ? The flooring is stone (expensive) but in winter is cold.The kitchen had two vey small sinks in different areas not one big one. On entering the focus is on the huge island in that very fancy kitchen. But thats the cooking area so looks messy and stuff has to be kept away. Her husband complained that he prefered the small compact aparment they had before. They divorsed - did the house play a part in their relationship or did all that colour affect their lives. Maybe designers and people are so taken up with computer company type offices they are doing that in homes. A home is a place to relax but not a work space.( Although today more and more are working from home which requires a workplace.).

*Individuality* . If there is a take-away I have learned from watching style and design videos, it is that your home should be a reflection of you and tell that story. I like to keep the main living areas feeling cohesive by using a tight color palette and varying the use of those colors in each space. I never understood the gray flooring trend, it feels cold and lifeless to me. I gravitate towards classic and timeless large furniture pieces. If I'm feeling trending, I bring it in via accessories.

In 1997, I had a pair of wing backs, that used to be my mother-in-law's, reupholstered (it was a pale mint green raw silk-looking fabric that was starting to shred and looked dirty). The upholstery shop said that unless the chairs were made in the early 80's or earlier, it wasn't worth reupholstering. He said that since the mid-80's, even many "top name" furniture makers (like Ethan Allen, he named) were making high end furniture like chairs and couches, out of cheap pine, and so the frames get wobbly and come apart, but charging same prices when they used good wood and joinery instead of pine and glue/staples now a days. The wing backs were old enough to have good frames that are solid and the upholstery 25 years later, is still looking fabulous with the same timeless tapestry fabric. So my suggestion is to look for vintage furniture, 1980 and before with good lines/silhouette and spend the money to reupholster. Modern new furniture, even if "high end" is made with cheap frames. Only a few manufacturers are still crafting with care, good wood and joinery, like Baker.

We purchased a small Victorian house, but the previous owner got rid of all the original features in hopes to make it look like an IKEA showroom and our poor house looked so out of place. Me and my husband are handy and we've been restoring it, replaced the crown molding and the baseboard that was removed, thrifted and repaired period fireplaces, furniture and light fixtures and slowly bringing it back to what we feel would have been its old self. I have always wanted anyone who visits me to not only feel comfortable & cozy, but also see who I am. As a gal who has always gravitated toward French Country & vintage decor, these last few years of everything farmhouse & neutral have been rough! Thank God for thrifting and being able to sew, but when we recently needed a new couch & loveseat,I was borderline suicidal. I already had a Flexsteel sofa & love seat and had hoped to have it re-upholstered, but the cost was insane. Because my living room is huge but extremely dark, I needed light & bright pieces. We went to every single furniture store in our metro area, and all I saw was solids in grey, tan, brown, and a little navy. I finally found a store that had a Flexsteel catalog and out of at least a hundred samples, there was ONE beautiful floral print fabric, and I jumped on it! It’s a shame that consumers are forced to buy trendy items, because that’s all they sell! This is a pretty new phenomenon, and it makes embracing your own style pretty difficult! The blue and gold dining room chairs are gorgeous! I love mixing vintage and working with a space instead of tearing it all down, unless it's poorly made of course. All new lacks depth and feels sterile. :) Great video.

One of my peeves is baskets people have in their sitting rooms holding their throws, but they have to have one throw hanging artfully over the edge. And I don’t like everything matching like microwaves, toasters, kettles and canisters.

Not just Grey floors but walls and trim are often grey too and it has really run its course. I see it constantly on Zillow postings because it's a quick easy way to prep for the market.

I'm so over the farmhouse look (and I know you've touched on it in previous videos). Everyone - except me lol - and their mother did it...the signs in every room, the distressed furniture, the freakin' shiplap. Most of the time people just slapped up an "Eggs sold here" sign in their kitchens and called it farmhouse. Kitschy country is so overdone and uninteresting. Big 👎🏻 from me. Do you have any thoughts on interior design in regard to staging/selling your (small) home?
@j.j.32972 жыл бұрын
I bought a farm fresh eggs sign to hang in my kitchen. I laughed out loud when I saw it up. It looked silly especially since we buy our eggs from the store. I ran to the store, receipt in hand, took the walk of shame to return it. Never looked back. Lol

I agree. I hate that Rae Dunn stuff too. It’s now in every thrift and consignment store.

Yeessssss!! Love my mother and sister in law very much, blessed to have them. But damn, both their houses are soo much Farmhouse 2.0 and sooo many signs that say things lol. I don't get it, do you walk around your house reading the signs?? Ugh just not my vibe ha. I want to ask them "Is this genuinely what you like, deep down in your heart? Orrrr are you replicating what you see on Pinterst and HGTV"

@@j.j.3297 Having spent my early childhood in a farmhouse complete with outdoor "plumbing" and splintered wood, "modern farmhouse" annoys me because this decor is invavrably used without context and winds up being glaringly out of place in the suburbs. And those silly "word art" signs! If you have to put "HOME" in your foyer or "EAT" in your kitchen, you are eligible for placement in a different type of home.

I never decorated farmhouse. I had one dumb sign and returned that very day. ??

I’m not sure if it’s a trend or not, but it seems like many designers and decorators relentlessly promote modern, modern, modern. And cheap. I have a 1928 bungalow that I’m trying to decorate with a fresh but not modern style. I’m certainly not shopping at IKEA or Home Goods. I like that you promote finding your own style and expressing it!

Love this video! You didn't mention trends that you might love but have become ubiquitous and so I cant recommend if you want to have a home that looks personal and unique. These include boucle upholstered sofas and chairs (sorry) and the various versions of the Pierre Jeannete chairs, those chain decoration people put on their coffee tables, and the Tom Ford book of course. Are there so few beautiful things that we all have to buy the same ones? I guess that is what a trend is. Love you! Sent from my iPhone

I love wood that has truly been reclaimed or salvaged from some prior use - but only when it ties in with the rest of the character of the home, and only when it's genuinely been salvaged! I have never understood the random splashes of "reclaimed" wood that started showing up a few years back - particularly on kitchen islands.

I've never liked a branded piece of art on the wall (unless of course it's Warhol) I always used to love Interview magazine though, and they had a home on my coffee table when I would get a new one. They had the best covers (and I would actually read them too...lol)

Sage green EVERYTHING and faux distressed wood antiques that are brand new. Especially dining tables that look half rotted. How can you keep the tabletop clean enough to eat off of?

Did I enjoy the video? I loved it.... as usual. As a designer, it's so refreshing to hear another designer (with an adoring audience!) be frank about all those 'trends' that people jump on whether or not they go with their style. I especially love that no more Yetis have to be sacrificed for more furry pillows and that gray floors can finally die a natural death and be replaced by sleek tile or more appropriate shades and styles of wood. Thank you for saying what I have been thinking.... I cheer for your honesty and just hope that those listening will really believe that your great design sense is being honest about looks that really need to be kicked to the curb.

I agree with saving the older homes. Many were well built and have beautiful architectural features that newer homes lack. I also try to buy art from local artists that are within my very limited budget. I'd rather hang originals than cheap prints even if the artist is not Picasso. Also, I'm supporting the local artists that way.

I bought a place that came renovated with grey floors and I cannot. I'm not sure how many years I'll be here so I can't decide if its worth changing. I love it here but I'm using it as a stepping stone to get closer to the beach too. It's a constant debate in my head especially because it's a whole strata (HOA) issue as well. I'd love some floors that look like real wood though and it's always on my mind. I've compensated by using a lot of natural materials and warmth throughout my home and I am pretty happy with how that looks at the moment so maybe I'll just accept them and keep the cash.

I love this segment!! You are spot on about all of it. Especially the grey flooring. I always thought that that trend would die fast and it’s so obviously trendy. As far as fireplaces, the only place I think a long fireplace works is in an outdoor patio setting. I think they look really beautiful in those situations.

This is so timely! I like looking at real estate listings. Seeing everything that has been bought instead of found/discovered/handed down is so boring. It does take time to create a home. Finding your own recipe instead of following someone else’s is so satisfying.
