If you had $100 to spend in your home right now, what would you prioritize? How about $1000? For $100, I would repaint a tiny bathroom in my home that I've been neglecting. For $1000, I would pick the room my family uses the most and go ALL OUT!!! 🤩What about you?

I would save that money for using it for important things, like repairs.

I just did it! With $600 I bought 2 area rugs, pillows, wall art and new pillow covers for some existing pillows. I then repotted my live plants and moved around some shelf and table decor for my den which has all my old living room and dining room furniture from my apartment days…looks so cozy!

7/11/24 Super motivational episode. thank you for mentioning the word “Declutter.” …. Because that’s where I would need to begin. Other than that, spending a couple hundred dollars to refreshen paint would probably do the trick. Fortunately, I have all the bones within our home. Listening and actually “having the mindset” to keep going can be extremely challenging. Life circumstances can definitely hinder aspects of your life. Thank you once again for this motivational episode. Sincerely, Lori

I didn't see a window in the photo of the bedroom, but I just kinda default-assume it has one? Would you do lighting first, or curtins? I'm thinking curtains (for privacy) before a new ceiling fixture? I can attest to new paint giving you the biggest transformation for your buck. I cannot believe what a HUGE difference it has made in my home. The whole house was painted dark grey semigloss(how depressing...) except for the primary bathroom. That was painted a pumkin diarrhea color. Not joking. Now it's all blues, greens and creams. Such a relief to the mood and eye 😊

Hi Julie! I agree with how you use the alternative of moving furniture instead of buying. As for that matchy matchy look you point out instead of buying more, paint it or change the legs out. Many wood sellers or restoration sellers have wood legs. You just screw them in but check how they are installed bf you buy furniture legs. Also you can send out good matchy matchy furniture to a refinisher. If it’s not expensive may be replace it but I’m a fan of using what you have and making it better instead of buying more. Chalk paint is really great to change the look of furniture. Easy to use and clean up and fast drying time. A coat of wax on it makes it quite durable. There are a lot of choices to buy quality wood furniture at any reseller or on line. Upholstery is very expensive so think twice bf picking up upholstered pieces if you think you are going to reupholster. It can cost more to do that than buy new. Happy decorating!

Yes chalk paint Margaret! I totally forgot how easy it is to use, no priming, no sanding. Just paint over wood legs and mix those finishes up, brilliant! 👏🏻

Great video, Julie, as always. I thought you were going to recommend a headboard first. That could be a DIY with a padded headboard using a beautiful fabric ( I saw one today in a condo real estate listing ). The chest of drawer under the TV is key though. In the living room, it looks as though they need a larger coffee table. I prefer coffee tables without sharp corners, so round or freeform. We had a gorgeous big teak coffee table in a fun curved shape (1960s).

Headboard would be the next step after storage and organization. But yes, a DIY fabric wrapped headboard would be perfect for this small bedroom. I always try to prioritize function before the stylish pieces! 👍

Enjoyed this video. Right now, any excess $$ is earmarked for lighting. The previous owners were really into ceiling fans (which I hate) and one by one I’m phasing them out as I can afford to. We started with 13! Including 2 on the covered patio and one in the utility room. That and paint are becoming the foundation of my decor plan.

In the common area I would do something completely different. 1) Turn the current dinning area into a TV space: use the larger sofa and a new credenza under the TV. 2) Move the dining table next to the kitchen (now they have to cross the whole sitting space). 3) Create a sitting space between the TV room and main entrance using the remaining seats, anchored with an area rug.

The first priority for the bedroom should be to hide the TV wire. Then look @6:56. I get that the TV tilted to watch in bed, but if I’m seeing this angle every time I walk in the door it’s really disturbing. Combined with the mini desk and floating wastebasket, it all screams dorm room.
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu Ай бұрын
It’s a good starting point, but that TV dresser/ console can also help to hide the cable if they pull it off the mount and simply place it on the surface 👍

There used to be a show called "Designing Cents." My favorite episode was a single mom who received a Habitat for Humanity house. Her living room and dining room were designed for $500. Not including painting the two rooms( the paint was purchased from the oops bin at the paint store). The rooms were lovely and would make anyone happy to live there. I think America throws away too much stuff that can be refurbished. We need support systems to keep neighborhoods safe, habitable and pleasant to live in, no matter the income of the families.

Such a wonderful idea and I definitely agree that interior design as an industry can be very wasteful. I need to look into this to share community efforts that accept items that typically go straight to landfills. SO much of this can be repurposed in a meaningful way for deserving families 🫶🏻

Could be just due to very different locations (comparing this to northern Europe), but these budgets seem quite small for the suggested changes. Of course, if you have the time and energy, you can save a lot, but a scavenger hunt is not necessarily possible. (Naturally, you can use the tips of the previous pricerange and just get less for more.)

Hey Julie. Love your tips. Two bedrooms are just off the living room so there is no privacy and closing the door all the time is not really possible. I would like to have some privacy by hanging curtains separating the living room and bedroom as the house is open concept. Any suggestions for which side I should hang a curtain whether on the living room or bedroom side as the bedrooms entrance is directly from the living room.

Everything is easy … except it’s not realistic ( for most people). For instance , when you pull that living room together in the middle of the room .. what is your plan to manage task lighting ,electronics , or a heating pad ?.. Most people don’t have outlets in the middle of the room. I have solved it but I’m curious how you’d advise this audience. Or painting bath cabinets .. to do it right , without paint all over the hinges and pulls, you should prep , remove doors and replace hinges and pulls and most importantly,with the right kind of paint .. not std wall paint. The bed in the bedroom would have a wow factor putting it diagonal in the corner for starters and work out from there.. asking for a friend😉
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu Ай бұрын
Thank you for watching Karen! I would never push furniture up against the wall simply because I wanted to hide an electronic cable- that would be akin to me serving my electronics instead of me serving my own personal functional space planning needs. Use an extension cord- unsightly, but necessary. Table lamps can be lit with rechargeable bulbs if you must have one in the center of the room. Clearly, this room isn’t large. The distance between a side table and wall would not surpass 3ft in which you can flank that end table to the nearest wall and hide a cord. Chalk paint is your best friend if you don’t want to prime and prep wood cabinets- I’ve had a lot of success with latex paint as well. You just need to seal it with a clear coat 😉 Hope that helps! ✌🏻
@karenmontgomery5274
@karenmontgomery5274 Ай бұрын
Thanks for replying . Thinking of children and older people an extension cord would be very hazardous. My L shape couch is “floating “ and its takes some very creative and strategic furniture and rug arranging to pull off a totally cordless look with 4-5 things needing plugs . I just think furniture staging is unrealistic because once you actually live in it , you find your lifestyle is compromised. I see this a lot with staging an office with nothing but a floating desk in the middle. Very pretty .but difficult to use. Again more creativity needed. But good news . I’ve found solutions . Thanks .. love to watch everything you share!
