cabin noise levels are extremely important to me. It’s absolutely a dealbreaker when there’s a little to no insulation, there’s rattles, or when you hear the tires on the road excessively.

A quiet cabin matters, because it affects how I receive the audio system. It can be a deal-breaker if too loud.

This vid capture the beginning of standardizing on how interior sound levels are quantified, both with direct measurement and with high quality audio recording. Not an exact science as these measurements in this vid were influenced by high winds and gusts. All full throttle runs were 10-50 and not 0-50 as captioned. Thanks for watching and be sure to leave your questions and comments.

Cool comparison. For those who don't know, an increase of 3 dB represents a doubling of the sound energy. I'm loving my Mazda 3 for how quiet the cabin is even thought it's a "compact" car. The interior is comparable to higher end cars.
@BeyondTheTestDrive9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. We now subject all the cars to this same test and we may add a 40mph test over a rougher two lane road. The 3 does pretty well. And it’s a tough test because a single dB or two as you state makes a big difference. Thanks again!

Quiet is my criteria. The 4th gen Mazda3 is one of the quietest cars I've driven (I have a 2014 3rd gen which is awfully loud). Compared to a Lexus ES350 and ES300h - 2022 the 2019 3 I drove is just as quiet and actually smoother ride than both Lexus! :) Only thing holding me back is small interior - smaller than our 3 which is one of the smallest... But I can barely hear noise in 2019 3 and I might buy a CX-90 down the road when all the bugs are worked out :)
@wyw20110 ай бұрын
Mazda’s 4 cylinder is smoother than Toyota’s V6? That’s quite the achievement if true. Even the Germans couldn’t reach this level of refinement with their 4 cylinders.

Thanks for watching and weighing in. We have a full review series on the CX-90 so be sure to check that out if you have not done so. Yes the 3 is not the one to get if you regularly carry folks in the back seat. Thanks again and happy motoring.
@BigdisplacementI610 ай бұрын
@@wyw201hey dude idk about smoothness but the ride is surprisingly cushy soft. The 2019 mazda3 sedan and hatch I drove ride smooth even over speed bumps. Nicely chusioned. Can't say the same for ES which can transmit jolts and sharp impacts. It's roomier and a touch quieter. The engine in the hybrid is loud but Mazda's engine is quiet when driving.

My 2016 mazda 3 is very loud on the highway imo and I notice I need to raise the volume wayy higher in order to listen to podcasts which is awful longterm for hearing. It also takes a bit away from the audio quality which is actually pretty good on a mazda 3

I've measured a couple cars. Even though some cars have the same loudness in db, the frequencies are different. Lower frequencies are not as annoying as the higher ones.

Great point. I think I mention somewhere it’s about the quality of the sound also. In this case the 3 is close to the CX-9 but the CX-9 has a much more hushed feel. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I'd like to see a comparison with American cars. I want a super quiet cabin. I hear the mainstream Chevrolets seem to have quiet, comfortable cabins. If I were an auto journalist, I would measure the noise level on the same stretch of road for each vehicle. And perhaps measure at a few key speeds and road surfaces.
@BeyondTheTestDrive9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Yea agree. The point of this video was to introduce our testing method. All the cars we test will undergo the same stretch of road and will try to do early morning when there is no traffic’s and wind. Some Chevrolets and most Buicks tend to be fairly quiet. Our standard is to maintain 70 mph over one mile and look at avg dBs. We have a rough road we may add a low speed 40mph test to. We also look at the high quality sound files to confirm the in car measurement.
@ramhaven23229 ай бұрын
Try compaing these to a buick...I bought a 2021 hona crv and am floored how horrible the road noise was,, and i also changed to michellin defender tires(helped a little), but still this was my first honda after owning GM products for many years and can't believe how bad the sound quality is. I thought Honda were supposed to be so great.
@BeyondTheTestDrive9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and weighing in Despite their overall excellence Hondas have always struggled with cabin noise, primarily road noise. The latest gen CR-V (review below) is finally acceptable and decently quiet. Have not tested any Buicks yet but they have a well earned reputation for going the extra mile when it comes to quietness. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKjSe5ZuoJysnZosi=iuzm3XQfQ-B_F7N0

A quiet cabin typically has a noise level of around 55 decibels (dB).
@BeyondTheTestDriveАй бұрын
thanks for watching. Do you mean a car that is completely off and sitting still? The quietest car on record right now at 70mph is a Rolls Royce Spectre at 57 dB. Anything in the low 60s is considered premium luxury quiet.

I tested my 23 corolla with a decoble meter app(probably not the most accurate) and it topped out at 88db on the highway. Its SO loud and makes my ears ring. Wish theyd trade me out for an older avalon or something :D
@BeyondTheTestDrive6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. But no, that is not accurate. 88db is lawnmower and motor cycle range. The newer Corolla is quieter than the 2016 tested here. So good headphones while watching that video will provide a good relative difference between that car and others here. Small compacts in general are not the quietest but yours is average compared to most cars, unless something is wrong with the car or you have concrete grooved road surfaces which are very loud in all cars. Some people are sensitive to different frequencies and I have found some relatively quiet cars to be slightly annoying to me based on the type of sounds in the car, wind, motor, road. Thanks again for watching and happy motoring.

@@BeyondTheTestDrive I think its the rough roads we have out here in Idaho. There are sections of new black top that are MUCH easier on the ears but they chip seal the roads here which makes them quite rough and quite loud! I’m a “car guy” and I love cars. But only two of those vehicles - the Mazda 3 and the Toyota Corolla - are cars. The other two are some form of crossover, SUV, truck or whatever the heck you wanna call them; they’re both too tall to be cars and are closer to trucks than cars, an important distinction you don’t seem to make. Alas, it’s only cars I care about. I grew up loving “Car and Driver,” and those other two vehicles would never have been written about.

Lol "quality content" is like the meme of Obama giving himself a medal I’m not surprised by the Corolla’s poor performance I like Toyota as a brand and what they stand for but their product are made to be cheap. I even heard some complaints about the Crown (I think it’s that one) being super loud for something that was supposed to be luxurious and also for the price point. What I’m surprised about is how many vehicles you own haha
