Today we are going to replace the intermediate shaft on my 1994 Chevy C1500 and see it we can improve the sloppy steering that these trucks suffer from. The intermediate shaft is also known as the steering shaft. Maybe we will just call it a steering intermediate shaft? Either way, let’s just hope this Borgeson 000936 Steering Shaft fixes the loose sloppy steering in my truck.
I purchased this Borgeson 000936 Steering Shaft for $220 on Amazon and it is supposed to fit 1992-1994 Full size Chevy & GMC trucks. This is a heavy-duty telescopic steel steering shaft. Connects from factory column to steering box. Includes complete rag joint and billet steel universal joint. And made in the USA since 1914.

Dude! Great video!! Clear and informative. How's everything working out now that you've had a chance to drive it a while?

Thank you!! The truck has been driving awesome. I've put many miles on the new steering shaft and while it's not the Ferrari-like steering I was hoping for, it feels pretty good. I think I'll get a little closer to that Ferrari steering when I decide to upgrade to a performance steering box... one of many projects left to do on the truck. Thanks for watching!!

@@vincentorona163 I think it should fit as you have an OBS Chevy truck too, but make sure to double check.

@@BuildYourOwn I think the reasons you expected more precision and didn't get it are two fold. 1. You still have a rag joint. They're rubber and cloth so they have natural give to them, which will feel like vagueness. A dual u-joint shaft would have helped. 2. It's still a worm gear style steering system, which is not precise compared to modern rack & pinion. You can tighten the nut or upgrade the box but I suspect there are still limitations by design. Aside from that there are also bearings in the steering column itself that may be worn. And you have tall sidewall tires that will ride nice but not give you sports car handling.

The 84-94 Jeep Cherokee XJ steering shaft is the best upgrade for OBS....fit straight with minimum modification.....with this u eliminate the rag joint!!

Good video man I’m glad that I found your video in the instructions you gave from the manual. Because I replaced mine and I have to go around some pretty good size turns on my way to work and I can’t even turn my steering wheel the way you were turning yours. The steering is so tight after I fixed it if I move my steering wheel more than a couple of inches. My truck would probably cut a 360. I know it’s extremely hard to picture that but it’s almost like a racing steering rack or something it’s hard to explain but the best way I could explain it is for one rotation of the steering wheel. It’s like I rotated it three times. I’ve never had a vehicle do that. I’ve brought it to several mechanic shops and they just say it’s good to go.

Hey there, thanks for watching and I'm glad you found the video useful! It sounds like you've encountered quite a unique situation with your steering after the replacement. It's definitely not common for the steering to become that sensitive, and it's understandable that it would be concerning, especially when navigating turns. It's possible that there may be an issue with the alignment or another component in the steering system that's causing this over-responsiveness.

You can also adjust your steering box to take away some more of your slop. But be careful not to over tighten the screw. Only adjust (tighten) the screw a maximum of a quarter turn. Its real easy.

I just bought a 94 c1500 Suburban. I'm noticing a massive price difference in 1994 to 1995. What's the difference? They look exactly the same. Will a 95-99 fit my 1994?
@cpufreak101
@cpufreak101 9 ай бұрын
No, 1995 and up is completely different, with 1995 being an oddball transition year for many parts.
@TheRealWYNRS
@TheRealWYNRS 9 ай бұрын
@cpufreak101 yeah, I posted that comment wayyyy before I did enough digging or anything. Although, I thought I had. Plus one truck I'd looked at to compare, had modified their steering components so I was mislead on top of being somewhat uneducated, I suppose. It IS wild to see how cheap the 95 shaft is compared to the 94. Cheapest I found & ended up getting was around $250. Replaced the lower column bearing as well with the upgraded one. Not a fan though. I heard Wolfe has a nice kit though for about $100.
@cpufreak101
@cpufreak101 9 ай бұрын
@@TheRealWYNRS I think part of the reason for '95+ being cheaper is that it's a multi-piece shaft unlike in the '94 and older where it's all one piece

One could certainly do that. For me, this truck is about restoration when it comes to repair. For others, it's just about a fix and usually at the cheapest price. One way or the other, its all good brother.

I guarantee 50% of a worn out system slop is in the steering gearbox itself you can replace every piece in the system except the Box and you can only improve your steering slop 50% you have to do the steering gearbox, Additionally you have to get a really good Box you can't get some crappy rebuild one that's very cheap they come with slop in them
@johnny0454
@johnny0454 2 ай бұрын
The factory steering boxes rarely wear out unless you let it get contaminated with metal from a bad pump and drive it awhile like that. A little adjustment at the sector preload about every decade is all that's needed. 250k hard miles on mine, and it's still great, I have about 1/4" of play at the rim of my steering wheel... still using a rag joint that has been replaced. In the unlikely event that you do have one wear out... rebuild the OE one yourself rather than getting an aftermarket one.... you'll be waaaaay better off in the long run. Same thing with the pump, super easy and cheap to rebuild the OE one. If a pump does go bad.... make sure you flush the steering box before hooking up the new or rebuilt pump or it wont last long, a PS filter is recommended in the return line, just because.... why not.
