Great case study, Jake! Not all intermittent faults are as they seem. Superb diagnostic strategy, eliminating all the usual suspects, until the culprit was isolated. Pretty expensive culprit too. That coolant leak must be fixed before the new parts are installed, or they wont last long. Pretty sure customer preferred to have a run-of-the-mill intermittent wire fault 🙂

Man that can be some tedious time consuming work trying to find. Almost like the old phrase of "finding a needle in a haystack". A lot of techs I deal with on the tech line give up and considering how some shops pay, I don't blame them. This is exactly why shop owners and vehicle owners need to understand there's no place in the auto repair industry for the term mechanic anymore and realize the depth of the work we now do. That's a tough one especially at the dealer level when car salesmen are running things. My advice is to get a salary in writing and a good one or shake the dust off your feet and go somewhere else.

This is the second time I have seen this happen. When I had mine the vehicle came in for a recall that was a pcm update and an oil change. Customer had no symptoms. The scan tool would not update the pcm. Continued to say it lost com with the pcm. Ended up being this exact concern. Guess the short was too much of a fault to reprogram but not enough to cause communication concerns with other modules.

I did a 17 ford f150 the other day where the coulumn shifter wasn't working and I traced it to no power on the brake pressure switch, so I followed the wires under the panel when you open the door. There was some corroded wires. The 12v wire for the pressure switch and a CAN line wire all corroded. Repaired the wires and everything came back

Recommend a better DMM with remote smartphone functionality. Hioki has Android & iOS apps that allow you leave meter in place and view everything remotely on your smartphone, capture data for report generation for customer, etc. I replaced my Fluke stuff with Hioki in 2016 and haven't looked back. Also made in Japan. Might as well make it a current meter ( current clamp built-in ) as they give you all the functionality of a standard DMM with inductive current functionality. Thanks for the CAN videos, good troubleshooting techniques within.

Can this be the issue with my car? ABS was intermittent earlier this year. Was told by a o riley worker that it happens with new cars when it rains or snows, will trigger. To ignore it. Was very rare this winter. Only in last 4 weeks or so it wont turn off. Off o riley scan, bought solenoid and replaced it. Didn't fix it. When i gas up, won't turn over. Then the parking brake malfunction light flashing started in last 2.5. weeks or so. Today flashed immediately and constant in 10 minutes before steep slopes.

If you have any bus activity it will throw off your ohm readings. For this reason I do almost all of my resistance checked with the battery disconnected or I've waited long enough to know for sure the bus is asleep

I would have took some air and sprayed out the connector on the module side.. and just make sure there's not a bit of coolant shorting across the pins down in the connector itself.. but otherwise, this is why you can't ignore coolant leaks. I bet the water pump has gone bad and it's leaking from the weep hole.
