In this video, we’re going to talk about intermittent fasting and hypoglycemia.
When your blood sugars are dangerously low, it’s important to normalize them as quickly as possible. However, what do you do for subclinical low blood sugar?
If you have hypoglycemia, you may experience the following symptoms:
• Headaches
• Excess hunger
• Fainting
• Fatigue
• Weakness
• Shakiness
• Irritability
• Nervousness
• Lightheadedness
Many people will say that the solution is to eat more sugar. Crazy, right? In fact, they often recommend having 14 to 25 grams of sugar. This is like recommending that an alcoholic drink tequila.
The problem IS the sugar. While a quick boost of sugar may act as a bandaid, it won’t address the underlying problem.
The underlying problem is too much insulin. Any time you have sugar or other types of carbohydrates, you spike your insulin level. Over time, this can cause insulin resistance and hypoglycemia.
When you develop insulin resistance, your insulin feedback loop breaks, causing your body to create way too much insulin.
Low cortisol can also cause high insulin and low blood sugar levels.
Another cause is low glycogen. Glycogen is stored carbohydrates. If you aren’t storing carbs/sugar properly, you can develop low blood sugar. Potassium is important for storing sugar properly. It’s important to replenish your electrolytes regularly with healthy vegetables.
The key to repairing insulin resistance is to do intermittent fasting. This is because your insulin level spikes each time you eat. Intermittent fasting reduces insulin spikes so that your insulin level stays normal throughout most of the day.
The first step is to give up sugar and refined carbs. Next, you want to ease into intermittent fasting slowly. Start by cutting out all snacks. Then have your first meal of the day later in the day. After that, you can cut out one meal and have two meals a day. And finally, you can go to one meal a day if you feel comfortable with it.

One meal a day healed my severe hypoglycemia. I was so bad I was fainting, waking up sweaty and shaking. I started intermittent fasting eating for eight hours then fasting for a few days, then six hours, then after a week took the plunge to one meal at 5pm and I feel amazing!!! I'm 43 and I have been suffering severely my entire life. No more blood sugar crashes for the first time. I also take supplements now potassium, magnesium, cod liver oil etc. ❤️ never have I had this much energy in my life. This works!!!!

Baneful things I don't understand. I seem just the opposite. I just start keto and eat within 4-6 hours window. Prior to that I ate more sugar, and now less. I never have hypoglycemia and now I have hypoglycemia as oppose as 'heal from hypoglycemia'. Well, I cheat a little bit 'after' I have hypoglycemia, I ate a little bit of cookies, because I feel almost fainted. What to do?

I have diagnosed myself with reactive hypoglycemia. My doctor advised eating every 3 hrs, hardly practical! I find that when I wake up in the morning I can go up until lunchtime without eating and will not feel any of the symptoms, it's only when I have my first meal is when the roller coaster ride starts! Thanx for the tips, it's good to know I'm not the only one as my friends and family don't understand me at all.

I must say, I love Dr Bergs videos because they are short and right on point . He breaks down topics instead of making a very long video of which becomes boring that at the end of it, you can't remember anything at all. And it's weird when you think of something you want to ask and up comes the video.. Thank you Dr Berg. If there are doctors like you everywhere, this world would be a happy place ..

This is so true! I am so glad I am now keto-adapted and am able to do IF with no problem. Not too long ago I was prediabetic, insulin resistant and hypoglycemic and would be an irritable mess if I didn't eat often. It is such a relief now to go hours and hours without the urgency of having to eat to feel well. I will never go back to eating sugar. Not worth it. I am convinced this is the best lifestyle. So many other issues like brain fog and migraines have also disappeared. Thanks for all you do Dr. Berg!

How many meals are you having per day? Make sure to add enough healthy fats to your meals as that helps you feel full longer (satiated). I don't feel a need to snack anymore. I have 2 meals per day. First one usually consists of fried eggs in butter or bacon fat, bacon, spinach and/or avocado and the second one is usually a large salad with either romaine lettuce or kale, boiled eggs, avocado, cucumbers, black olives, banana peppers, bacon bits, hemp seeds and my own dressing with basically salt, pepper, olive oil and apple cider vinegar or lemon. The rest of the time I drink water, but only when I'm thirsty. Hope that helps!

You could try eating three times a day, or have boiled eggs or avocado with you. There is a big difference in eating real food as a snack and bad food! It can take time for your body and mind to get used to a keto diet. For some people intermittent fasting can be a bad thing if you have adrenal issues! Best of luck

Dr. Berg you always seem to deliver and have a video for all our questions. Had a bit of a scare today, I'm doing intermittent fasting/OMAD (18-24 hours fasting daily) and last night I had a good nutrient dense salad and total carbs was around 23 and total calories for the day around 1000, I am on a weight loss / healing journey and started IF about 3 weeks ago. I walk for 30 min at work daily and check my blood sugar after exercising (I'm not diabetic but use the meter as a tool to obtain knowledge about the food I eat). Today after exercising my blood sugar dropped to 66, then 59, then I forced my self to eat because I got scared. I even ate a Jolly Rancher chewy candy after my small meal because it only got up to 73, I haven't had sugar like that for over a month! The lowest I've seen it go was 70 and that was after shoveling snow for 15 or 20 minutes, I was wondering why all this happens. Is it just due to exercising too hard for too long? I'm assuming my glycogen stores were used up. Your videos are priceless and I appreciate all your knowledge and contributions.

Was diagnosed w/ PCOS 20+ years ago and have suffered with weight gain, painful periods AND severe hypoglycemia since. I had to eat every 2-3 hours while I was awake. I'd wake up most mornings already feeling like I had low blood sugar. Happy to share that I'm 3 weeks into keto and already down a pant size! I also for the first time in years was able to go 16 hours IF one day and 18 hours IF the next! UNBELIEVABLE! I had zero negative side effects. I had coffee with a splash of cream only in the mornings, but found when I woke I wasn't hungry. I waited until I felt hungry as a test and was able to do just 2 meals the last couple days. Definitely a Keto fan and I'm so happy to have found a way of eating that will help put my body into healthy homeostasis. Yay!

You rocked my world! I have been hypoglycemic since I can remember, like middle school? I seriously thought I had a tape worm or parasite. Now I'm in my late 30s and still trying to figure this out. Although I felt I had it under control, this video clearly showed me I don't. I have heard and watched videos on intermittent fasting and thought I could never do it because of my hypoglycemia. But your video explored my option of intermittent fasting fixing this??? WHATT??!!! I am a gym/hiking/active/outdoor enthusiast and struggle with extreme crashes and fatigue. This fall I would literally fall asleep on our hunting/hikes when we'd stop for breaks because of extreme fatigue. I am determined to pursue this option of intermittent fasting. Thank you so much.

I took myself off sugar 4 years ago. My only problem with it now is starburst. But after taking myself off of sugar, I am able to do IF on the 5/2 schedule. It seems to work best with my body. It takes some time, but you can do it. I was in denial and refused to listen to my body's signs that I was having TOO many carbs and WAY too much sugar. I my blood sugar always spiked tremendously, I never did get headaches. But I would get severe abdominal pains, confusion, shaking, fluctuating body temperature with hot and cold sweats. The ICU DR's. 'diagnosed' me with pre-type 2 diabetes. After two years of hell. I finally started paying attention, I also got sick of the ER in my town as, even being in a wheelchair, they treated me like a drug addict. I stopped having sugars, started cutting back on the carbs and obviously stopped consuming alcohol completely. I recently got my A1C taken, it is 5. I don't have pre-type 2. I don't even think I have hypoglycemia anymore. In fact, it's exactly like you said in this video. I don't feel hungry until the afternoon, then dinner. I still have problems snaking in between though.

Thank you Dr. Berg . I believe I am hyperglycemic. Years ago because I felt awful and got a headache when shopping after no lunch , my doctor told me to have lunch out . I've been building up the intermittent fasting and little or no sugar for months now , but recently tried to make it till 4.00pm . I wasn't hungry but I felt dreadful. I've gone back to breakfast at 11.00am for the moment and lunch , salad, protein and my homemade grain less crackers . I eat my evening meal between 7.00pm and 8.00pm . I hope I can fast a bit longer in time without messing up my blood sugar. K

I ate 2 donuts one day & went into a community center & passed out & hit my head & had alot of stitches & I told them about the donuts & they still said my sugar was okay at the hospital. I have had trouble with sugar for years & I do not crave sugar cause if I eat sugar I go downhill & have every symptom you said & I use to eat a protein right away so I wouldn't be light headed. Now since starting Keto I eliminated all sugar so I've been much better. Thanks for saying subclinical hypoglycemic. Its a wonder I'm not a diabetic with eating the carbs. Thank you!!

Fantastic advice ! My dips of sugar used to happen when I was 19 and I would always feel better after quickly stuffing my face with something. Never thought anything of it as there were periods that it didn't happen so much. I also have PCOS which I've been reading that over time it can give you insulin resistance (I'm 38 now). Anyway it all got a bit confusing and I was tested for diabetes which came up negative. Back to searching Google and was quickly directed to having Hypoglycemia with putting in my symptoms. There is a lot of pages that are very vague and like you said they say you should have a sugary drink or tablet at hand if you feel a low. This I felt was not curing the problem and I also got a fear of leaving the house unless I had a croissant in my bag or at least being near a food shop incase of passing out (I had a real bad one recently that did scare me) ! Long story short I've been having them a lot lately but I thought it was strange that I didn't crave sugar it's always the cheese, chicken or tuna I'd reach for as my quick snack to get me back to normal. So glad I have found your vids..from someone that was going completely mad ! I will update to tell you how I get on. THANK YOU !

My husband doesn't believe I have hypoglycemia even though my doctor already said I did. I just had my first baby and I am having a really hard time losing the last 15 pounds. Everyone I have talked to says try intermittent fasting and that it would make me feel better, while giving me more energy. I am so nervous because fasting scares me. I have passed out before, I have had really bad sweats and shakiness from this. I really need to cut the carbs out of my diet and start repairing this.

Jodi Copyak try reducing your calorie intake and choose better foods to keep keep you full longer, I’m hypoglycemic too and fasting is too hard for me. So far it’s worked twice for me to lose weight, the results just aren’t as quick

I’m hypoglycemic, and for me intermittent fasting is a hit or miss. But I learned to listen to what my body needs and what it can do. Sometimes I can do it without problems. I even tried fasting entirely for one day. I was dizzy but I overcame it by drinking water and coffee, and I was fine. Other times my body needed more food, but maybe because I was “stress eating,” so that’s something I need to control, to discipline. My body felt better too when I consume more vegetables, and sometimes no rice and carbs. Thanks for your advice Dr. Berg, cheers!

Fantastic Video. I am a Type 1 diabetic and the problem I get is when my blood Sugar is low I need to take Glucose Tablets to avoid Hypoglycaemia. I'm trying Intermitting fasting but a lot of the time I need to take glucose tabs because my blood Sugar drops too low. So I guess I need to reduce my insulin intake to find a way to stabilise my blood Sugar to avoid needing glucose tablets. Great video Doctor Berg. Keep up the amazing work! 👍🏻

Amazing advice. Thank you! I'm currently at the before stage ( 6 small meals as advised by my healthcare provider). I am so tired of food and eating right now that I just want to entirely forget about it. I am going to try this solution and will post in a couple of months. Currently I'm experiencing swings from 3.0 to 8.9 within a tiny window of time. Dr. Berg, thank you for posting this video. The best!

Going to give this another try. I remember feeling amazing when I was doing alternate day fasting but only did it for 1 week. I will ease back with an 8 hour eating window and then do alternate day when I feel ready. I think I finally got this figured out, so tired of feeling lousy.

POTASSIUM!! Thanks Dr Berg. I've been keto - on and off (mainly on) for a year. Went strict again three weeks ago and progressed down to OMAD 3 days ago. Today I woke up with hypoglycaemia shaky hands. My glucose meter confirmed it 63 mg/dL and I couldn't figure out why. Then I remembered two days ago, I was at the gym - first time in two weeks - doing deadlifts and had bad muscle cramps (I never get cramps). So I reckon all this must mean low in potassium. Thank again - you're awesome!!!

Thank you. Started IF too fast this time and after 2 1/2 weeks suddenly had hypoglycemic symptoms. Thanks for telling how to fix this. Need to back off the morning fast a bit and wait a few more weeks for the 18hr fast and eat only 3 times a day.

This thing called intermittent fasting should be called the right way of eating. I heard of these principles from my Yoga master in India. At that time the fad in the West was eat small portions throughout the day. My trainer in US, even today, swears by this technique. Yoga completely disagrees with eating small portions throughout the day and I guess that's "bad advise" as well. Thanks for these videos.

You're the best Dr. Berg. I want to fast but can't do less any more than 3 meals a day. I can't wait, but I do until the next meal. I do eat blueberries but that is the only sugar and very low carb. Thank you for what you do.
