NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice and consult a medical professional before adopting an intermittent fasting regiment. This talk only represents the speaker’s views on fasting, diet, and health. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Two-thirds of women 40-59 years old are overweight and more than 1/2 are obese. Intermittent fasting can help women lose weight effectively. And can have profound impact on bio-physical profiles, but also improved self esteem and interpersonal relationships. It is easy to implement, it is inexpensive and flexible.

My intermittent fasting consists of eating between 12pm and 4pm and fasting the rest of time. I have been doing this for over eight months and I feel as good as I can be at my age (I will be 77 in a few days!) I am extremely poor, so I can't afford the best quality salmon, and most of my vegetables, avocados, and nuts are not organic, but I eat as healthy as my budget allows. Sometimes what you don't eat is just as important as what you eat. Avoid processed and sugary foods, avoid restaurants (I can't afford them anyway!), make everything from scratch, chew your food well, etc. Hope it helps!

I started 16:8 intermittent fasting two weeks ago and have never felt better. I have about 30 pounds to lose and so far lost 8 pounds. The best part for me has been the renewed energy and less brain fog. I have an autoimmune disease and there were days that I could barely get out of bed. I feel so much more productive now. I can actually play with my kids and be attentive to my husband. I’m making dinner again and walking everyday. The impact this has had on my life and relationships is just incredible. I’m hooked. I’ll be doing this for life.

My husband, 37 and I, 33, have been doing intermittent fasting for 4 years. We started because of Dr. Berg. But this ted talk is very appreciated. Our health has improved tremendously with IF. We do 23:1 on weekdays Monday-Friday. And 20:4 on weekends. We have 2 kids together who eat very healthy & are not overweight. Unfortunately everyone in our families are either overweight, obese, and even morbidly obese on both sides. Both side's our families have numerous health issues & unfortunately passsing away early. My husband & I decided that will not be US. And we have dedicated for the past 4 years to IF and animal based diet all being organic and grass fed of course. We are the only ones in our families that are not overweight & are very healthy. Zero health issues. We plan to do this the rest of our lives.

This is my third week today, Saturday fasting from 2 pm to 6 pm, i eat 2 small healthy meals in that 5 hrs. I've lost lots of weight, and i feel much more alert and happier. I have ptsd and chronic anxiety after a serious motorcycle accident, losing many bones and brain bleeds. Im never hungry now like i was before. I now already look at food as fuel. No cravings either. I take apple cider vinegar with lemon, turmeric, ground ginger, cinnamon, and half teaspoon of celtic salt or himalayan salt. No more ppi for acid reflux as it's gone completely. I've been doing the drinks for months now. I cured my 54-year asthma with nac and other supplements. I might be ill and treat my body bad in the past with alcohol and drugs, but im clean 5 years and started this fasting 3 weeks ago as i know i will get better and fasting is will help repair me mentally and physically. This is so important. I didn't learn about proper food and eating practises from my parents. We would eat and snack before bed. For years I woke up feeling nauseous and tired, from overeating before bed. Now I try not to eat after 8pm, and when I do I feel so tired and slow in the morning. We need an empty stomach during sleep, digestion is a taxing process and requires energy. Let your body focus on what it needs to during Sleep!

I am a 72 year old male who began intermittent fasting to lose weight. Over two years after reaching my weight goal (and maintaining it), I continue to IF because it just feels healthier to me. I like the fact my organs get nice long daily break. I now believe that if you eat proper food and exercise about a half an hour daily, you will not be overweight and you will not get hungry. If we do have “breakfast” it’s just a cup of tea, maybe a boiled egg, or it’s eaten later in the day around lunch time, and it’s something like callaloo and salt fish (salt water cod and leafy green veggie sautéed in olive oil).

I used to work in an office where I could sit at a computer with a bag of nuts or chips in front of me and snack while working. Now I work using my hands and tools and honestly do not have a chance to stop and snack for hours while busy. I think that in the past people worked more physically with their hands and feet and didn't sit around behind a desk all day which enables people to snack more frequently.

Girls, hear me out! I'm 28 and I've been fasting for months. I started with the 16/8, then went for the 18/6, with the 20/4 after 2 months and then with the 23/1. I used to feel great, like I've never felt before BUT I had to STOP intermittent fasting because my cycle completely stopped. I learnt that women should be fasting differently to men. We have a more complicated hormone system. Hair might start falling and fertility issues might come up! PLEASE, pay attention. It is good to fast BUT NOT EVERYDAY, especially during ovulation and pre-mestrual week.

I fast for 20 hours a day and eat for 4. Except for the hunger I find that I generally feel way better. The biggest benefit I have noticed though is the lack of laziness. I find myself completing projects I normally put off and actively looking for things to do in my downtime. It also helps control my blood sugar so for a prediabetic this is extremely helpful.

I used to weigh over 400 pounds. In a little over a year I have been able to to lose over 100 pounds over the last year. I did this by intermittent fasting and switched to a WFPB (Whole Foods Plant-Based) lifestyle. No exercise, no counting calories. I am disabled so I couldn't exercise. But now with the weight loss, I can exercise. Exercise is a necessary key component for me now. I got down below 300 pounds and suddenly my weight loss stalled. So now I do DDP YOGA and use a stationary exercise bike. The adventure continues.

That did the trick - it filled me up and I didn't miss the rice and pasta. Weight loss to date is 88 pounds.

D Greg Many people fast as a part of religious practice for centuries. Fasting has been used by the devout (monks, priests, even the Buddha) to seek clarity of mind. Ramadan, the month where Muslims dry fast, is seen as a way of purifying the body and garnering gratitude for food as nourishment. This wisdom’s been around for a while. The 3 meals a day concept is very much a Western commericialized concept meant to sell you sugar and dairy because we were producing so much of it.

Hi. While cooking for my youngest child who is vegan and doing intermittent fasting, I adopted his schedule. He is 6' and maintains 195 # with workouts on top of a 10 hour work day. I lost 25 lbs, effortlessly, no longer have the annual visit to my cardiologist who was amazed at my health changes (I refused statins) and better BP readings, etc. When I shared what I was doing, he, the cardiologist said, 'oh, I can't do that'. Even with a career and a family, I think it is still doable, maybe more like 14 / 10. I am late 70s and have managed chronic health issues with diet, but allowing the body to function optimally and heal itself as we go with intermittent fasting, is a much better alternative !!! As a teacher I stumbled upon this process naturally- I was on the go in the morning, didn’t want to feel “weighed down” by food, ate lunch with my students, ate dinner with my family at home- a natural 6 hours on, 18 hours off. It only makes sense- the biological processes that turn food into fuel takes time and enzymes to work, and then need time to recover. You don’t run your car engine in the driveway overnight, or two hours before you need to leave. Doing nothing and resting the system is so important.

She had me with " If you were told breakfast is the most important meal of the day that was wrong." I stupidly listen to trainers, friends, colleagues and started eating breakfast every day. I gained 25 pounds in 2 years. I didn't put it together until one day it just hit me that I was automatically reaching for cereal, oatmeal, eggs or whatever in the morning when I was even hungry. Yet actually had become a habit. I was thin most of my life but gained weight in my 40's. Of course I did! My metabolism was slowing down because I was nearing menopause. ("Clark"is a family nickname, I'm a chick, lol) What I should have been doing was exercising more, or exercising the same amount but do some in the morning and summit night to keep my metabolism going. It took me forever to figure out what I've done wrong and make some changes. I mean literally by then I was 50 and really putting on weight in places I never had before period it took a while but I did it. But I would like to tell everybody that if you are not a breakfast person, or never work, don't listen to anybody else! if you're not hungry don't eat!

Then with IF/OMAD you ate rice and chicken and stew that you would eat enough of it to have the same 2000 calories. So basically it saves money. Completely agree. I stop eating at 6pm every evening. I don't ingest food again until about 10am the next day. I drink caffeine free tea and coffee throughout the day, and, as she said, whole foods...I also started cello taping my mouth every night -- a much more restful sleep. Life is good.

I have been following intermittent fasting for 3 months. My weight is reduced to 75kg from 83 Kg. I follow the 18/6 window with a low calorie diet. Most of my pre-existed health problems have vanished. Example; acid reflux, cholesterol, borderline diabetes, skin problems. I feel more energetic, lightweight and improved concentration

I started IF in November of last year and I’ve lost over 20 pounds doing 16/8. Changing my eating habits and diet has been extremely helpful. I was never a big water drinker now i crave it. Christine thank you for the inspiration

I've been fasting for 16 hours a day (it's really easy if you consider that you will be asleep half the time). I feel so much better, it's truly amazing how much energy we can take out of ourr own bodies

Okay, so I am going to try this 16/8 fasting. I'll eat between 10 am to 6 pm. After 6 pm ill start fasting for 16 hours till the next day and will eat again at 10 am😂. But did you even consult any dietitian or doctor before you started IF?
