I’m curious the reasons one is supposed to combine soybeans at an angle? Do they feed into the header better or cut better? We have been using neighbor’s 1440/1640 also with the 1020 15’ head.
@possumholler05
@possumholler05 Жыл бұрын
@@lucasrabe Can usually pick up a little more ground speed and a few more acres a day cutting on an angle just from more even feeding. (In my experience) Instead of constantly feeding the center and watching beans pile up on the left and right until there’s enough to push them against the auger to pull them to the center and pulling the rotor speed down momentarily, you can cut on an angle and keep pushing until your rotor speed falls to your “sweet spot”. Can usually hold that steady speed til the end of the pass. Some say you can grind the flighting on the auger square and help too, but I prefer to just cut on an angle. Mine tends to drag crap under the right side of the head at times when going with the row and if I don’t catch it quick enough it’ll build up dirt on the sickle and I have to stop and rake it off. Never have that problem when cutting on an angle.

I owned and operated an IHC 1420 back in the late 1980's till 1997. I had an 844 cornhead and an 820 20 foot floating head for soybeans. It was very easy to adjust and I could get a great sample going 3.5-4.0mph in corn and 3.0-3.5mph in soybeans. The best way set the concaves was to minimum clearance for beans. That setting provided for the best flow of material through the combine, best sample and with very minimal return. It was a small combine but quite efficient. Thanks for the video. It brings back memories that make me wish I was still farming. I did have to quit for medical reasons but those were the good 'ol days for sure. It sure beat working for corporate America.

Great vid👍I know fella who 1420 with 25ft header, he harvest cereal crops. Our old MF 3342 is Australian special with seconds box, so spit out, if any seed but trashes better quality seed. When seconds box is full, you pull up to the truck, lift up handle on outside combine with old wheat bag n unload, filling it seconds grain, chaff n straw. This combine was made because Australian farmers had strict quality grain policy when delivering to local silos n would be heavy discounted if found non clean sample. This is why MF combines were popular, IH Australian 711 were too.

One side was needed for the clamp.. the other was needed in a pinch later, the ground to the mudhog was bad and I had a jumper wire handy in the toolbox on the fuel trailer so I just clamped it onto the negative side of the battery to get my 4wd going. Helps on those turns on slopes when it’s slick on top.

I hauled around 20 of these around West Australian wheat growing areas, did a few to Sth Aust too, for IH Australia, including the header. had on e to go to Sth Aust over a xmas period, i could only get a oversize permit to the border, SA has a oversize curfew at xmas. met up with another truck to transfer it to. he was going to run the gauntlet into Sth Aust. back then there was nothing much at SA/WA border. a tourist from Melbourne asked what the 1420 was for, so i said don't tell anyone but there is a huge marijuana crop about 40ks inland from here and they're going to use this! he was mortified. the other guy had 4 pilot vehicles with HF radios and police scanners for the 600 ks he had to go. to get around the weigh bridges farmers had bypass roads and charged around $100 for the use, usually done at night. intersting days back then. the farmer that bought that 1420 , his farm had a bumper crop before xmas and that profit paid for 1420. and header, we called them fronts, went by general road freight. Another popular toy was the AcreMaster 404A artic 4x4 tractor, made in Meriden WA. V8 Mercedes around 515HP, a Clark transmission and Raba diff assemblies. i even did did a 4 week demo trip hauling one to SA, Vic and NSW. pretty much bullet proof, built on the KISS system.''lol. all this around circa 1980?

Sometimes it is operator preference on the way to cut. Harvesting on an angle allows for even wear on the sickle. If the beans are lodged then it can be easier to harvest and able to get more of the crop.

Took me back to running our 1440 for a few minutes there Jason. Thanks for that video. I love seeing and hearing them old 1400 series Axial flow's. Dad gave up the farming but a neighbor bought ours about 6 years ago and is still using it. Now a days I get my farming fix watching your videos and some of the farm tubers like the Welkers and Cole the cornstar. Keep up the great videos sir.

I am surprised IH bothered to design and build 20" rotor machines. Especially with the 715 already extended a couple years beyond the end of 815/915 waiting for the 1420's development, they could have just kept 715 in the line for another few years into the mid 1980s instead. How much demand could there have been for new class III combines by 1981 anyway? Besides saving development costs, keeping 715 a little longer would also allow them to sell to some customers who wanted to bale longer straw or preferred a conventional combine for whatever other reasons. On the other hand, CaseIH did keep the 1620 in production through 1991, so maybe there was more demand than I'd think. Of course CaseIH didn't have to design and develop it though, all they had to do was keep building it for six more years. Regarding the turbo on this one, I feel doubtful that it was factory since I'd never heard of an OEM turbo 358. And I would think the low volume 1420s would all come with the same diesel engine, or only one engine at a time anyway (CDC 359/5.9L replaced D358 in 1620s in 1989). But I just found out that some European market IH tractors such as models 1246 and 1255 came with turbocharged 358's. So who knows, maybe IH did turbocharge that German diesel on rice special 1420s, especially if there was no rice special 1440.

The engine doesn't sound like diesel. It sounds like the old Super M. What would be the average bushels per acre with soybeans? It appears it was planted with the 30" row corn planter and as such doesn't appear to be a high yield crop.

Those beans in that field there averaged 52 BPA. 60-65 isn’t uncommon on better soils near here. I typically have a lot of 60+ beans in tiled bottoms in a decent year on 30”’rows. Many studies show that 15” beans will only offer advantage over 30” in a dry year to slow evaporation and to offer earlier canopy to reduce weed pressure. With a good chemical program I can match the weed pressure advantage... but I can’t control the weather .

@@possumholler05 Thanks, Ryan. You have great knowledge in running your operation. I think most people are clueless how much science and study goes into farming. From the road side it appears to be easy work riding around in the cab of a tractor or combine. They don't see the midnight oil being burned in your office managing production, repairs, new equipment purchases, etc to make sure ends meet. It always amazes me how we are totally dependent on our farmers yet the farmers are generally offered the clean end of the turd when it comes to getting paid. Sorry for the metaphor, but, the most important people in the food chain, the farmers, get the leftovers. I grew up on a small farm but still have cousins that make their living off a dairy farm and I know they struggle. Blessings to you and your family.

Thanks Mark, definitely room for improvement, I don’t make a living by any means, as I have a full time corporate job but it allows me to continue to farm on a smaller scale while my family doesn’t have to suffer the full-time farmer’s economic concerns on the level that many do. I’ve been there, and decided the stability of off-farm income was better for all of us than chasing acres and landlords was worth. My hat is off to all those who make it happen without any off-farm income, but that doesn’t make the smaller guys irrelevant. I know a lot of what some would consider smaller farmers that can generate more income per acre than a lot of “mega-farmers”. Some of the biggest guys are good at it, and some get by just because the economy of scale allows them to get by without as much knowledge and planning.

That’s me... that head has always wanted to push a little bit of dirt under the right side (in conventional tillage only) no matter what I’ve done over the years to solve it.. so running at angle after you get the field opened up stops that. It rides over any ridging on that angle vs just plowing the ridge. Also, with 30” beans, sometimes you cut a few feet and then they get deep enough on the platform for the auger to feed them in, so you run empty for a second, and then send a bunch to the rotor, run empty a little, send a bunch through the rotor. Running at an angle keeps them laying back and forth across the platform like a sewing machine, never have to change ground speed as it feeds consistent all the time. Also wears all of your sections out the same (over 3x the acres though) instead of wearing the same 4 sections directly on every row and none of the rest. Just my preference and what seems to make it easier on me. I also can run a little later into the evening when they start getting tougher with the more even feeding.

These are sweet little machines but there were a few engine failures when these first came out. The inside of the oil pan had been painted and the paint would eventually peel and clog the oil intake. Harvester issued a service warning/recall or whatever you call it that involved removing the oil pan, applying a paint remover to remove the paint and re-installing the oil pan.
