We were mainly a Deere farm as far as tractors but the implements ran the gamut from Athens discs to New Holland balers and we had a White corn planter. I didn't know they made combines. Loved the old days when the industry wasn't so consolidated and you could see nearly every color of the rainbow out in the fields. Great video as usual.

Hi big tractor power here on my farm in Queensland Australia we run two White combines an 8900 and an older 8600 and they’ve been pretty good combines I’ve had the opportunity to do some harvesting with our 8900 and I actually enjoyed it it’s good to still see some of the older equipment getting used these days just goes to show that the older stuff is still pretty reliable
@davidboyce8121

I bought a 8900 White combine dirt cheap because of the very faded red paint and it was the best piece of machinery I ever bought. A White mechanic told me to spray it with WD 40 penetrating oil and leave it alone out in the hot sun for a few days. The paint and decals all came back to original color for many years just like it was repainted. WD 40 worked also on a red Case tractor, same result. A man from Outlook Saskatchewan was buying 9700s and strenghtening the frame as the combine would flex when the hopper grain tank was getting full. He also took the rotor out and cleaned out all the fine dirt inside it and then welded up the holes in the rotor that the dirt was going through and corrected all the problems.

Nice to see these older combines still in Action, Especially the odder ones. My mentor growing ups dad bought a 9700 White new in 79 and they ran it on there Farm up until 2017 and along the way they picked up two more. They ended up selling the 3-9700's tp a guy that already had 2-9700's 2-9720's and one 8590 MF. SO the guy now has 7 machines its quite a sight.

When our farm, way out here in Oregon, switch from Minneapolis Moline Uni-combines in like the late eighties or ninties, i think, we upgraded to white combines. We got a 8800. Over the next couple years we acumulated a couple more. Today we still have one 8900, two 8800 (would have three but lost it to fire) and one 8600. We retired them quite a while ago. But to put icing on the cake, we still use two 2-155's with fwa and a 2-135. So you ain't the only one with white combines and tractors.

I bought a new 9700 White in 1980. There was nothing even close in capacity at that time when it was running that is. I was constantly plagued with breakdowns and probably spent as much time working on it as time harvesting. Biggest issue was dealer network and the stocking of parts. I later bought another used 9700 just to have parts available. We ran the Whites until 1990 when I bought a Deere 9600. We were so bored because The Deere never broke down!

The fact is deere by that time had perfected the old straw walker design while other companies were building and improving rotaries. Then deere simply copied everyone elses rotary design after it proved superior to conventional. Not bad business but not very innovative.

Had both manufactures in Brantford during those years. It was a combine town with WFE/Cockshutt vs Massy Ferguson/Harris competing. The axial combine technology development was supported by the Canadian government. Massey was first approached to develop it but declined. White Farm picked it up and ran with it. Lots of local families helped work on making the big axial brute function. The Axial was super efficient machine. 7% grain loss was considered unprecedented. Good to see them still going!

Brandtford has always interested me for their combine production. Thank you for sharing the additional history. I am working on a future video featuring the first rotary combines from each major manufacturer. It is interesting how manufactures seem to group production of harvesters together. It may be for a skilled workforce. International/Case IH and John Deere’s combine factories were separated by a chain link fence in East Moline IL through 2003. Case IH moved to Grand Island, NE in 2003 to build combines alongside New Hollands. Claas builds combines in Omaha, NE. In a 30 mile radius on the German/Belgium border Class, John Deere and New Holland build self propelled forage harvesters and combines.

In ‘88 I bought one of the first Massy 8560s that was patterned after the 9700 after Massy bought the rights to the White rotary. The 8560 was a scaled down version of the White 9700 at 185 hp/185 bu tank. The 9700 was in a class all by itself back then. The console was virtually the same as my MF8560. Identical layout and function. That MF 8560 you show didn’t go very much further with that rotary screen on the radiator not turning!! Ask me how I know……..

It has a Perkins 640 v8 that is around 265 hp. I had 3 and the factory supplied parts upgrades for about 5 years. They sent 2 of the design engineers out with 2 machines that worked alongside us for 3 years. When a failure occurred you could talk to the actual designer and recommend changes and upgrades. Several issues were dealt with very well. Virtually unplugable unless the cam followers on the rotor drive started to fail. I put larger followers in and recontoured the basket to accommodate them, could change them out in about 30 minutes after I developed a technique that did not require full disassembly. A design that has been emulated by all major companies. Our custom cutter had JD and always had 2 experimental units with a factory tech along. The tech guy took a lot of notes and pictures and was truly amazed at the productivity. Worst part was that the elevators and augers would wear out in 3 years. We developed inserts to act as wear plates. Great rock trap and using Sund pickup header we could travel at insane speeds. 44-50 foot swath of 80 bushel per acre at 5-6 mph.

@45Deere9500
@45Deere9500 3 жыл бұрын
In a machine of that vintage, it’s likely that you have to hold a lever to swing the auger in or out, instead of pushing a button on today’s machine. If that’s the case, swinging the auger in and out all the time isn’t as handy to do . Also, with the length of the auger (or lack of length compared to today’s larger combines), there’s not that much weight hanging out there, bouncing around. It’s not near as likely to damage anything unlike a long auger in today’s big machines.

Compared to a JD 8820, how much bigger is the WHITE? It seems huge compared to even a JD 9500 in my mind. Can someone give me a size idea?

It is considerably larger. In the video I mention it is 6,000 lbs now than an 8820. The 9700 is about 30ft long and the 8820 is 26ft.
