Today we take a look at some International Rules Football! This has been a highly requested video so I'm excited to take a look at this mash up of AFL and Gaelic Football. It seems like a cool concept having a International sport between Ireland and Australia. Hope you enjoy the video!

The games are actually closer than you’d expect. The Aussies are more physical and professional but they have issues kicking the round ball. The Irish are far more skilled using the round ball so it does even things out.

Just to be really weird, in compromise rules Shinty-Hurling, both sides use their own sticks.

@@qwertyTRiG that is weird… I don’t know much about either sport but is one stick noticeably better than the other?
@gavincurtis9758
@gavincurtis9758 3 жыл бұрын
@@lucditton6241 a hurl has a large wider hitting area on it where as a shinty stick is a lot skinnier and kind of looks a bit like a hockey stick that has no 180 curl at the end but rather a grudual bend. Hurls used to be like shinty sticks but as tge game developed they changed. I wouldn't say that one stick is better because each team is used to their own stick which means it doesn't make a difference in that aspect

Interesting comment on the advantage, it evens out because the Irish are used to handling the round ball and kicking it, often helps them in the general skills. Was a period a few fights broke out on field because the Aussie's got a bit too physical at times trying to take advantage of that.

Mostly played between Australia and Ireland, but I have heard of a British university (Bristol?) which has a GAA club and an Aussie Rules club, and the two played each other in this sport.

The one big issue with International Rules is that the AFL teams were using it as an opportunity to poach GAA players. Quite a few successful GAA players have been lured down under being signed onto AFL teams :)

Used to love it years ago ... the story usualy Ireland would run ahead over 2 and a half quarters more used to the round ball then the Aussies would start powrring back last quarter and a half as their superior fitness would start to show. Made for some nail biting games.

I used to love these mixed rules games but I'm less enthused by them now. The AFL use them to recruit Irish players. The AFL guys are generally fitter and stronger but the round ball is a huge advantage to Ireland. Also the Irish goalkeeper would be a goalkeeper in his own code whereas the Australian goalkeeper is just whatever defender is the best shot stopper rather than a specialist goalkeeper in his own code.

International rules is essentially gaelic football with an aussie tackle since the GAA added the mark there is no fundamental difference apart from the tackle.

International Rules needs to develop a compromise ball that is half round and half ellipsoid. Then neither team would have any clue what the ball was going to do or how to kick it. Chasing the ball down really would be like trying to catch a rabbit.

this game is like 80% Gaelic football n 20% Aussie rules so any advantage the Aussies have in fitness is negated by playing an almost foreign game if they increased the length of the game and the size of the ground so it's more like 60/40 in favour of Gaelic then it would be no contest

I think the tackling makes a huge difference. The gaelic lads don't have that technique. You can't just switch that on after a couple of weeks training. If the ball was an aussie ball we'd be fucked

International Rules is BS. It was an attempt by AFL to get some sort of international standing. It is not and international game; it is a hybrid game played in a remote corner of the world and most of the world does not give a shit about it. The Irish players are too skillful and the Australians try to make up for this with brutality. Thankfully this concept has been abandoned.
