+Mark Martin Well, if I remember rightly, I think Liberia is the only other country that retains the Imperial system, which means that the US is out of step with other developed nations when it comes to standard measures, despite the Imperial system being more difficult to use and learn. It also means many designed products, like machine and plumbing parts are incompatible with the products of anyone else. It also means that students either have to learn two systems and end up having to constantly convert them, or be left being confused whenever encountering the Metric or SI system, which I have personally seen happen quite often with US citizens. And when one day I looked up the reason why the US still retains the Imperial system, it turns out to be due to the objections to the Metric system by some religious groups. So is all that good or bad? Why not tell me what you think it is?

+Mark Martin I must have stumbled across the reference by accident a few years ago, as it took a little while to find it again. Firstly, I should correct myself, as the US retains the English System, not the Imperial System (which was formalised by Britain after US independence), and now refers to it as the US Customary System. Also, Myanmar is a third country which is only now starting to convert to a Metric System. In the Wiki article titled "United States Customary System", under the 'History' section, it mentions that the US based International Institute For Preserving And Perfecting Weights And Measures was a strong advocate for the Customary System in the late 19thC, because they considered the 'Napoleonic System' as atheistic, and that God had ordained that the original units thought to have been used to build the pyramids were passed onto the US. The Wiki article further references the Institute to a 1957 article by Martin Gardner called "The Great Pyramid", and googling the Institute gives some more references. Although there are many reasons for why the US still remains out of step with the rest of world regarding weights and measures, the Institute is regarded as the first major anti Metric movement in the US.

+Mark Martin Using standard weights and measures isn't like trying to tell everyone to speak one language. That's a ridiculous point, and I'm sure you know it is. Frankly, the issue doesn't interest me enough to care whether you think it's a problem or not, and I'm sure it makes it easier for the US to deal with Liberia and Myanmar. And I'm also sure that a Mars probe (in 2009 I think) crashing due to a mixing of measurement systems during fabrication is completely inconsequential (I'm sure too that you can easily confirm that fact for yourself). After all, my first comment was just a throwaway observation, and it was only you who wanted a value judgement placed on it. And, of course, the US has much greater things to worry about, like having quite a few adults who can't point out their own country on a blank map, or why the US has over 20% of the world's incarcerated prisoners, despite being less than 5% of the global population, or why so many US citizens think that the universe is only a few thousand years old, is geocentrically revolving around a flat Earth, and that NASA faked the Moon landings. So yes, viewed in proper perspective, the US not converting fully to the Metric system isn't a problem at all!
