"We have a lot of science racks" "We do a lot of the US science in here" I find it somehow amusing how he just refers to it as "science". This is how I imagine a typical conversation goes: Astronaut 1: "What are you doing?" Astronaut 2: "Oh, I'm just doing some science. While you're here, do you mind handing me one of those science samples?"

You gotta love NASA vocabulary. Example: On fake station there looking very busy maintaining the luminators. That's NASA talk for windows. People are waking up though. The obvious wire harnesses, a moth flying around in fake station. Dont be so naive there on earth in front of a blue screen. When there horizontal notice how there heads tilt upwards. But they say there is no up or down in space.

Andy Besbrode Not particularly. ISS crews spend so much time in mockups before launch that some of them have remarked how _familiar_ everything was when they arrived on Station for the first time. The main difference is that it’s a lot easier to get turned around and lose your direction aboard the real thing, since you have the direction of gravity to help you in the mockups.

You need to watch several complete ISS tour videos before you now where (and which orientation) exact everything is. I draw a complete map (modules and equipment orientations etc.) in my head after 3 hours of different tour videos. It's really confusing first.

Isnt it right that space actually has gravity to a degree and the reason the space station and all other near earth craft dont is that they are falling very fast and they are always falling just past the earth?
@elevown
@elevown 7 жыл бұрын
Space has no gravity - but i think what you mean is gravity on the iss is more or less what it is on earth - i think it is like 5 - 10% less, yes - because it is still very close to earth - and their weightlessness is due to the iss being in constant free fall round the earth.

wouldn't using a centrifuge on the ISS cause some unwanted angular momentum?
@Alex-Lay
@Alex-Lay 9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Mann Anything that spins would cause some amount of momentum, but as those centrifuges, or fans on laptops, are so small as a portion of the stations mass, it can't affect the total momentum of the station much. That's also why they have stabilization systems (including the control moment gyros Don Pettit mentioned at the end), to be able to cancel out any unwanted angular momentum that builds up over time.
@bababoombaboom2465
@bababoombaboom2465 6 жыл бұрын
no - why would it? It starts from a rest state and finishes in a rest state. What is the sum of forces? Angular momentum is generated, and then it is canceled when the acceleration is applied in the opposite direction to stop it again.
